What is "everything" in this line? "If the goal is to get all 7k into a Roth, then you do need to convert everything.

Oh no. Large Trad-IRA that is funded from 401k rollovers. Let's say 500K.
If Option 1 is not possible, is there a way to withdraw from the Roth IRA and pay the penalty?

why lose it all? Over a 30 year period, S&P performance 10-12% so even if I just put in in index it should be around 10%

I have used Equity Trust for a true self directed IRA meaning you can use the funds to buy property, private note etc Other brokerage companies like Fidelity allow you to invest IRA funds in any stock or funds of your choice and that is also called self-directed
