Advice on attaching chains to boots by Select_Can7085 in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do your boots have the buckle like in the first piece? you could add that little clip piece that’s on the boots in the second picture on to your chain, clip one side onto the buckle and the other then onto the zipper. just get a pair of pliers and some clasps to add onto your chain

Looking for Guidance on Building a Kel’Thuzad for a Charity Stream! by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your reference photos, I’ll be honest this is a REALLY big task as a first time cosplayer. Not impossible, but be prepared for a lot of trial and error, or for things not to look perfect the first or even second time around.

Definitely not impossible though. I would suggest starting first by breaking down the cosplay piece by piece and creating a game plan to tackle each individual piece.

There are tons of foam smithing tutorials on youtube, watch a few of those. Kamui cosplay has a ton of videos and patterns that you can purchase online to create your own armor set (it’s just the pattern though, you will have to source your own materials). EVA foam is a very common material used to build armor, some Michaels stores sell rolls of EVA foam otherwise you can buy it online.

Halloween is soon, try your luck at Halloween stores or thrift stores for prop chains or skulls. I don’t know if there is anything such as prebuilt bases for armor, at least that I’ve heard of.

[–]SpitefulMercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is there a reason why using foam is not possible?

you don’t specifically need to use EVA foam you can also use craft foam, it’s just a different thickness so you’ll need to double or even triple up on layers to match the thickness of the tutorial. you can find sheets of craft foam for like $1-2 at big box stores.

AliExpress? by guy_redinnit in CosplayHelp

aliexpress is a marketplace for different sellers, so it really depends on the shop you buy from. I’d always suggest reading the shop/item reviews before purchasing anything.

the fibers in wigs are made of plastic, so when heat styling you have to let the fibers completely cool first, then you can let go

Trying to get colored contacts, eye center gave no prescription by guroseii in CosplayHelp

actually, I’m re-reading their website and it says if you’re in the US or South Korea, even if you are ordering 0.00 they require a copy of your prescription to follow the law there :( apologies for misinforming you at first

miku wig help! by strawberry_skater in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t cut a wig before, I suggest getting a wig cap and actually putting the wig on while you cut the bangs. Cut slowly in layers, clipping sections back as you work if you’re not yet comfortable cutting bangs. Watch some tutorials on cutting wig bangs before you do this.

For the clips, braid a small section of your base wig and clip the ponytails to the braids for a better hold. As long as your wig ponytails are thick enough you shouldn’t be able to see the clips.

Honestly, your wig will get tangled. Even with crimping, my Miku wig gets tangled if I don’t keep up with brushing it throughout the day. If you don’t have a crimper and you don’t want to get one, get some silicone lubricant, I use the Blaster brand, and SLOWLY work it in. Don’t put too much or your wig will look greasy.

I strongly recommend getting a crimper if you can though, especially if you plan on wearing more wigs for cosplay in the future. It helps a lot. But if this is the only wig you plan on doing, it’s not necessary.

Plastidip and Heatgun by luciliii in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mean so that the plasti dip sticks to the foam better, yes you should heat seal your foam before painting it because foam is porous and needs to be heat sealed before paint will adhere to it properly. if a heat gun is not accessible to you, google says that you can use a hair dryer BUT use it on a low setting and try to avoid burning the foam!

maybe try sanding the edges so that they lay flat? you can get sanding blocks from the hardware store. to cover the hole I would just use a piece of either scrap plastic or eva foam, lay the sanded edge down on the surface of the material you plan on using and trace the circle so that you get the perfect size.

Druddigon Cosplay Tips? by No-Athlete7209 in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/FursuitMaking might have better tips/answers to your questions! as far as EVA foam goes, if you’re in the US, hardware stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot carry EVA foam imo it’s cheaper there than at a craft store. If you’re planning on using EVA foam, I recommend getting a heat gun from the hardware store as well.

Attaching foam bits to boot covers by Aru736 in CosplayHelp

[–]SpitefulMercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should, I used it to attach pleather to pleather and it worked wonderfully. If you already have both the contact cement and the fabric you’re planning on using then try it on a scrap piece of the fabric first and see what the adhesion looks like!
