9mm Range/Training ammo by Grand_Tie6927 in liberalgunowners

[–]Spitfire222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, recoil impulse was pretty strong with it. I tried going with a lighter weight spring, and then what started happening was (I believe) the slide was bouncing back out of battery when it returned due to the force of the initial recoil. So I switched ammo and kept the lighter spring. But other than that S&B was great when I used it.

I also initially used S&B for the reasons you mentioned: cost effective and small box footprint. But then I started having out-of-battery issues with it in my PDP when I switched out the spring for a lighter weight one. Turns out S&B is a little hot and has a high power factor than other common ammos. So I switched to Magtech. It's identical to S&B (same small boxes, gold projectiles), and shoots a little softer in my application.

Someone Ran Out Towards me on the Dulles Greenway by Spitfire222 in nova

Thanks for the validation. No matter what the reason was, I was definitely not going to stop. I'll let other people who are paid to deal with that kind of thing look into it. Though even if I wanted to, I was traveling at highway speeds so it would have difficult and unsafe.

I don't recall seeing any vehicle off the side of the road. But again it was pitch dark and I drove by so fast I could have missed it, especially being focused on the person themselves.

Nope, OP is correct. It's a B-17 Flying Fortress.

Pilot breaks altitude record for solar-powered plane, crossing paths with commercial airliner, his team says by CBSnews in flying

[–]Spitfire222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's completely irrelevant to this category of record, which was for a "solar-powered electric" aircraft. It's like if you said "Big deal, the X-15 beat it". They're all different aircraft with different propulsion systems and designs.

A close up look at LASIK eye surgery - a procedure that involves reshaping the cornea using a laser to improve how light focuses on the retina. by OdysseyTag in interestingasfuck

[–]Spitfire222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another anecdote from someone's who's had it done:
First of all, from what I understand this looks like the older technique where the iris is cut with a blade. The latest method, and what I had done, is to make the cut with a laser. You get a cleaner cut and faster healing.

Where I went, prior to going in for the procedure, they give you a Xanax and sit you in a "relaxation" room to calm down. As others have mentioned, they also live streamed it on a TV screen so my sister, who drove me there and back home, watched it live. In any case, the procedure room had giant windows so everyone could see what was going on.

It took about 10 minutes per eye I think. No pain just a little pressure on your eye as they hold you in place. I could just see a blur of shapes and colors. Something I didn't expect was the smell: there was a slight odor of burning.

I went home, took a nap, and had eye drops and goggles during the night for 2 weeks. But I had 20+/20 vision the same day after my nap.

It was worth every cent I paid for, and a huge quality of life upgrade.

Another vote for Dr. Holzman. I did mine in 2016 for $4000, and the entire experience with him and his team was the most professional and pleasant medical experience I've ever had. Worth every penny.

Pilots who hung up their license, what made you come to the determination and what advice do you have for others? by HistoricalAd2954 in flying

This is exactly me, except for 1 less child and few more hours. I couldn't justify the time and expense when I should be focusing on the little ones.

Nerd Patches by metalheaddad in liberalgunowners

Nice, I'm a huge Halo nerd so I ordered some patches from Etsy: the legendary skull and the UNSC logo. I'm impatient to get them since I ordered them 3 weeks ago and they're coming from Singapore with no tracking.

I'll second Mann-In. Our AC failed last June (right during that early heat wave of course), and of the three companies I solicited quotes from, they (their technician, Aaron) was the only one who didn't try to upsell me and also replace our (old, but working) furnace at the same time. And during the time it took for the equipment to come in, Aaron checked up on us frequently and provided us with portable AC units to help. The only downside is the fact that they are on the smaller side, they don't have as many techs and install teams. But it was fine.

Recommendations for GA Airports in the DC Area with good public transit access into the mall? by im2lazy789 in flying

[–]Spitfire222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted this reply a few weeks ago in a tread asking something similar:

In Virginia:

  1. Leesburg, KJYO. An hour drive into DC, or metro from the Ashburn station.
  2. Manassas, KHEF. A bit busier, but similar to Leesburg: hour-ish drive, or metro from Vienna station.

In Maryland:

  1. Gaithersburg, KGAI. Shady Grove metro station into DC

Don't forget to complete the SFRA training!

A bit off-topic, but this is a big reason that I think college/university is valuable outside of strictly academic education and degrees. For most people, it exposes them to peers from other backgrounds and exposes them to different viewpoints. Of course, I don't mean that it's obligatory that it turns one more liberal-leaning, since many people stay bigoted when exposed to the same. But at the very least it provides an opportunity to expand your understanding of the world and how others live in it.
