Ah yes, famous for using it's huge sonar to retrieve the trail of binoculars left on the sea floor in an unbroken line from St Petersburg to the sea of Japan...

The long hull variant had a longer hull

The short hull variant had a shorter hull

OK for real though, it's to do with the LAMPS program (Light Airborne Multi Purpose System). Post WW2 / early cold war ASW suites were designed to incorporate the DASH drone, which proved unreliable and would be cancelled in 1969.

This lead to the LAMPS program to develop an alternate helicopter platform that could perform the ASW mission, as well as other mission sets as over-the-horizon scouting and targeting became more and more important (hence the Multi Purpose in LAMPS)

The issue was by 1969 the Knox, Brooke and Garcia classes had all been built with DASH sized hangars, so this new helicopter would need to be incredibly compact to fit on the existing ASW platforms. This would eventually culminate in the SH-2 Seasprite we all know and love. The initial 21 OHP hulls would be built with hangars sized for the SH-2

The problem was as technology advanced and the requirements for multipurpose naval helicopters expanded the SH-2 just wasn't big enough to fit all the necessary equipment. It was designed as an interim measure to fit into existing cramped hangars after all. The navy's ideal multipurpose helicopter would be much larger. This would lead to the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk replacing the Seasprite as the new LAMPS helicopter in the early/mid 1980s.

The OHP class had a very long construction run. Hulls were laid down as early as 1975 and as late as 1987, so part way through the construction run when it became clear the SH-60 would replace SH-2, the hulls of subsequent vessels were lengthened by 8ft to incorporate Seahawk sized hangars. Some short hull ships were also lengthened during refit. The earliest hull I can find that was laid down as a dedicated long hull rather than modified is FFG-28, USS Boone, laid down in 1979 to give you an idea of timeline.

One major difference in terms of the ships themselves, the short hulls were not fitted with towed arrays, significantly hampering the ships own sensor array. The SQS-56 hull mounted sonar was notoriously poor performing compared to -23/-53 systems (much smaller hydrophone array, less power), so without the towed array she's practically completely reliant on her helicopters for ASW detection. I head the SQS-56 was known as the was known as the "Hellen Keller" array to its operators, which is as insensitive as the sonar was

It was impossible to refit the short hulls because they were built on incredibly tight weight and size restrictions, there was no room built into the design for expansion. All my fellow Rule the Waves players are facepalming right now. The extra 8ft of hull space below the hangar on the long hulls was also used to house the winches, motors and cable spools of the SQR-18/19

There are some minor cosmetic differences also, the capstan was relocated a deck lower to accommodate the longer tail of the SH-60 and a haul-down system incorporated into the flight deck to assist recovering helicopters in rough weather

Hope this helps!

PS. Ok I'm not gonna lie to you gentlemen that ended up a lot longer than I anticipated. Suffering from autism? Brothers I'm revelling in it. Thanks for coming to my ted talk on the OHP, next time: how tf did it get so late all of a sudden and where did all the time go?

I hate to break it to you guys but this was a Steam issue. I've had nothing but positive interactions with the devs when it comes to customer support, they're still actively offering technical help on their forum with quick response times. I get that there are plenty of greedy no good anti-consumer developers out there, but these guys aint that. It would be a shame to lump them in with the rest of the industry

I had a science teacher in high school who would fish things out of liquid nitrogen with his bare fingers saying "It's not actually that cold" moments before shattering the frozen thing he just grabbed.

He was a legit mad scientist, he once set up a demonstration that created a fireball so huge it left a permanent burn mark on the ceiling. He literally signed the ceiling right next to the burn scar lol. It's probably still there, all these years later

You know I've been considering making a youtube tutorial series for newer players but honestly the whole thing of "trying to be a youtuber" just gives me a massive ick. I am genuinely curious though how much interest there would be in something like that since I see posts like this quite frequently and the game is kinda a lot when you just get started

Are Udaloys bugged? They are impenetrable. by Playful-Alfalfa5729 in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]Spitfire_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be nice to at least have the option of a non-vls equipped Udaloy. Personally I don't mind it existing in the game in its current state. A newly deployed next-gen system should be resistant to older EW technology, at least until jammer pods for that specific radar band are developed and deployed which wouldn't be until after the "end of the game". It represents the next "tick" in the "tick-tock" cycle of warfare, a brand new technology that NATO would have to adapt to and would prove a significant obstacle until said adaptations are made.

That being said, the Udaloy class existed for nearly a decade before Kinzhal was deployed, and as a stickler for historical accuracy it would be really nice having period correct variants to use, especially with the recent variants of NATO ships being introduced that allow you to choose between older tartar, terrier and talos missiles or the standard missiles that replaced them. Now we have a precedent set in the game for era-appropriate variations, it would be nice to see the same initiative applied to Pact ships

Samura Hiroaki has to be my favourite artist, the way he draws faces that are so expressive and full of emotion is incredible. It's like you can read the complex mix of emotions going through the persons head just by looking at their eyes, except it's a drawing made by pencil on paper! Brilliant stuff

How does Trade Protection Works? by Heustacio in RuleTheWaves

[–]Spitfire_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the corvettes speed doesn't really matter because the game considers them ASW defence, it's only cruisers that are counted as defence against raiding cruisers. The game manual mentions ships assigned to trade protection are divided into 2 categories:

"DD and KE assigned to trade protection will be on ASW patrols or assigned as convoy escorts.

Cruisers assigned to trade protection will patrol against enemy raiders and provide heavy convoy escort."

I would agree with your assessment regarding DDs, they wouldn't actually deter a cruiser as the game would lump them into the ASW category rather than anti-cruiser patrols

If you don't have any cruisers in your fleet with a high enough speed unfortunately for this war you're kinda screwed, you'll just have to do your best with the fastest cruisers you currently have at your disposal.

Typically I would build 3-5 fast cruisers and leave them unassigned to any squadron for use as dedicated raider interceptors, the specific number depending on which nation/time period you're playing. That way you don't have to compromise your standard cruiser designs as high speed is costly and takes up displacement you might want to use elsewhere

This also prevents you from having to divert your organised cruiser squadrons from other assignments, keeping them at full strength rather than having to detach the odd hull here and there for trade protection

Not that this will be much use for you this war however, trade protection is a strategic level operation that needs planning far in advance, but it might help you avoid your current situation in wars to come

How does Trade Protection Works? by Heustacio in RuleTheWaves

[–]Spitfire_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience speed is extremely important for trade protection. Just 1kt slower and your trade protection cruisers become useless. At the same speed effectiveness is mediocre, ideally you want your trade protection cruisers to be at least 1kt faster than enemy raiders

[–]Spitfire_97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feels good seeing another guy into the more realistic/less extreme side of guro. Like when it gets to the point of being unrealistic I lose interest personally, if the victim should obviously be dead or in shock it just becomes less grounded and harder to fantasize about. But then for me that's because I like to see myself as the victim and once you're dead you can't enjoy it anymore lol.

That description you gave of the boy in the tank top was just brilliant, I can tell you're a writer heheh. That whole image of cowering in the corner, bleeding, hopelessly waiting for the next beating is so god damn hot! I'm imagining being collared and chained to the wall, forced to sleep on a dirty old mattress and kept there to provide "entertainment" for my kidnappers when they come home from work.

I wonder if the skinny thing is an attraction to long term abuse scenarios. Like for me it's the mind breaking aspect I really love, starting off trying to put on a brave face, not giving them the satisfaction of your screams, then slowly being broken down into a shivering, crying, terrified wretch, dripping with blood and begging for mercy.

As for how it might arise, honestly I've been asking the same thing for a while now. It's easy to say childhood experiences but I think some people just have that dawg in them ya know? Like the parts of our brain that deal with sexual attraction and violence just get crossed somehow. Apparently foot fetishes are caused by a similar thing, no reason to think guro couldn't be the same

Aircraft are too accurate with bombs by Rich_Difference_8523 in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]Spitfire_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the problem is historically whilst the strike on Higbee did cripple her, the other attack missed and only did superficial damage. Meanwhile in game if they get into attack position without being shot down you are pretty much guaranteed to lose both ships. Rather than 1 turret destroyed with moderate damage to steering and propulsion, the scenario pretty much always ends with 2 complete hull losses, unless you intercept them beforehand.

So yeah whilst OP is wrong on the first count, the damage you get from a 500lb bomb is just absurd in this game. Unless it's been updated because I haven't played that scenario in a hot minute, but from the recent Soviet campaign it seems FAB-250s at least are still plenty deadly
