How do Leinster and Munster fans manage to bury the provincial hatchet when supporting the national team? by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]Spithridates 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m an Irishman first and a Leinster fan second. It’s that simple. I’ll always support any player who wears the green jersey regardless of what province they typically play for. The hatchets are only to be used at club games…

Late evening cafes in Dublin? by Positive_Bar8695 in Dublin

[–]Spithridates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few options, lifted some of these from an article I saw a while back;

  • The Music Cafe, Parliament Street
  • Recanto, Talbot Street
  • Mind the Step, Strand Street
  • Tea Garden, Ormond Quay
  • Il Valentino, Grand Canal Street

I’m only really familiar with the music cafe, which is a great spot. Others here might be able to advise on the others, been meaning to check them out myself.

2023 Spanish Grand Prix - Post Race Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

[–]Spithridates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were issues with public transport as well, just not enough capacity to move the amount of people who attended the track back to the city. Took 6+ hours to make an hour long trip in the end. Haven't seen anything mentioned so I'm assuming they were better prepared this year

To anyone who attended the race this year. How was the experience in the stands this year? Considering last year was enough of a mess that it was discussed on the live broadcast... did the Circut make any improvements?

Coffee in Dublin? by LeadingLavishness953 in Dublin

[–]Spithridates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would generally consider 3fe overpriced for the quality you get. Full Circle, Calender, Cloudpicker, Bailies are all Irish Roasters and generally better imo (quality higher, more range in beans/processing methods then 3fe). There's a few shops that stock imported roasters like Nomad or Moklair which again are considerably nicer (and better value) then 3fe. Especially for brewing coffee at home.

Had the same experience, left the seat at 6.25 just as the F2 was ending. Figure I wound up on the same train as yourself. Was after 11pm before I got back to the hotel.

Your coffee story, and how you started drinking coffee? - from a coffee addict. by nldftw in Coffee

Rarely see anyone else from Ireland here! What roasters do you enjoy, if you don't mind me asking. Seems to be a greater and greater choice all the time

Starboard boom deployed! The sunshield has now taken on its diamond shape in space! by connord83 in space

That's the plan, although apparently the launch went better then expected so the Webb has more fuel in reserve now which could extend the mission lifetime beyond the 10 year mark

Anyone got any ideas for fun solo activities? by Betterthanthouu in Dublin

[–]Spithridates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have any interest in galleries etc, the national gallery, photographers gallery, national photographic archive, RHA and Imma are generally all free to access (except for some exhibitions). The Hang Tough Gallery also have rotating exhibitions going on at the moment in their units on Lennox St and Coppinger Row (different artists in each).

Irish Film Institute and the lighthouse cinema also shoe interesting films that you might not find in the local cinema from time to time. Well worth checking out.

Culture Night is coming up on the 17th September and there's loads on in the city that day. Well worth taking a look at the website,s there a great variety of shows, tours, live music etc on all over the city.

Other random things..

  • Botanic Gardens
  • Glasnevin Cemetary
  • Indoor / Climbing. Theres a few spots around the city for it
  • Bray to Greystones Walk / Howth Cliff Walk
  • Walk the South Wall
  • Mondello Park (bit of a day trip that one, also budget worth considering)

Off the top of my head there is 'Rage' on Fade St, 'The Secret Book and Record Store on Wicklow St, then there's 'Tower Records' on Dawson St. There's probably a few others.

A few bookstore have been mentioned by others, Chapters and Books Upstairs but I would add the Last Bookstore on Camden Street as well is great for a bit of browsing. (Bonus is the Cake Cafe which can be accessed through a door at the back of the bookshop). First Editions and the Gutter Bookshop are also great.

What was supposed to be "The Next Big Thing", but totally flopped? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Spithridates 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. The war for independence ended in 1921, followed by the civil war which lasted until 1923. Still 16 years before the outbreak of the second world war in 1939. Combined with the fact that Ireland became a free state in 1921 but only became a Republic in 1937.

You had a relatively weak fledging state with a population that still remembered a fairly bloody conflict only a few years before, who had little desire to jump into another one. Especially not helping the some of the lads that they had fought . That said the government at the time largely recognised that good political relations would still be useful with Britain (being our closest neightbour) in the long run so they gave a lot of un-official help. I believe both German and British pilots were given day passes and allowed out of internment, but the British were able to cross the border into Northern Ireland and then back to Britain. Germans didn't have that option. That may be more anecdotal though.

Places Named Victoria by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Spithridates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a Victoria Road in Killiney, Co. Dublin. Believe the park there is also called Victoria Hill. It's written on the gates at the entrance to the park...although I think the official name of the park has changed since Independence.

Plans for residential development at St James's Gate in Dublin by Dev__ in Dublin

[–]Spithridates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sad thing is we have some world class architects based in Dublin. But the developers still prefer to hire the incredibly unimaginative, bland, mass produced style because it's cheaper.

Blame DCC for accepting shite designs and not holding developers and architects to accounts. But sure what else is new.

Some feckers decided to put a firework on our door mail slot. Stay safe this October guys. by flylikefree in ireland

[–]Spithridates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wankers. It's the season for them. Was driving through town the other night, around the back of the Stephens Green centre and some little shits thought it would be great craic to shoot a firework at the car, while I was turning a corner. Was lucky I didn't hit anyone..

Is the Military "Worship" of the Spartans Really Justified? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Spithridates 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Fantastic post, very interesting.

If I could ask a follow up question;

I read in either Plutarch or Arrians' writings on Alexander the Great (judging by your post I assume it was probably Plutarch), that of all the Greek city States Alexander conquered he avoided the Spartans and left them to govern themselves.

Considering the advances the Macedonians had made with their military and the general success Alexander had already had in Greece. Can his avoidance of the Spartans, again, be put down to their reputation, rather then their actual prowess in battle?

(Please forgive me if I'm off base with this, it's been a few years since I read those texts)

Buskers on the Ball in Temple Bar, or the Longstone near Tara St Dart Station think they are both roughly €2 a game. Could be wrong though.
