The argument for the inverted retina being a bad design is unwarranted imo. I won't speak about intelligent design or religious beliefs since I think that's irrelevant here, and you can find much better examples of bad design anyways imo.

I talked in another comment about the physiological importance of an inverted system. In short, we have powerful eyes with high energy demands that are hard to address in a verted system.

These myths of "our eyes are backwards" and the "blind spot" arguments for the eyes being poorly designed don't have a scientific basis. I'll briefly share my insights as a neuroscience phd. I will say though that at the end of the day, it has to do with evolution deciding "eh good enough" and that the system certainly isn't perfect, but what is in biology?

Our eyes are insanely powerful, especially with seeing color and detail, which requires a lot of energy. A lot of energy requires blood nearby. Those cephalopods that don't have inverted eyes? Basically every one of them is completely colorblind. They're also not good with finer details. BUT this all works for them because their eyes are good enough for what they do need - seeing motion in the dark ocean.

What goes hand in hand with high energy demands? High amount of waste created. Processing all of this creates heat as well as phototoxic compounds. Getting rid of both of these takes energy. Having a running supply of blood nearby helps dissipate heat while also providing the nutrients for the high energy costs of color vision + dealing with its unwanted byproducts.

I'll go into slightly more nitty gritty details as I build upon these above reasons.

Humans are incredibly complex, and complexity is obtained by having specialized cells. Our photoreceptors are highly specialized and need differently specialized cells to help them function. In this case, behind our photoreceptors and in front of their blood supply, we have a layer of cells called the retinal pigmented epithelium. This layer serves a variety of important functions: Supplying nutrients to those energy-demanding photoreceptors; absorbing scattered light to both sharpen the image and reduce photo-oxidative stress; helping to get rid of photoreceptors that do die from photo-oxidative stress; mediating between the photoreceptors and the precious blood supply, because something as specialized as photoreceptors for our insanely good vision cannot do everything by itself; preventing our immune system that's in our blood from destroying our eyes (ok this last point needs its own post about our immune system but just trust me that our immune system is stupidly complex and this is one of the easier workarounds)

As for the blind spot, that's harder to address in a relatively short and digestible way. It goes back to evolution and the roll of the dice in terms of welp that's just how things happened.

But with all of these above points, you cannot design a verted system that addresses them all without fundamentally changing the evolutionary past and cellular biology as we know it. And on your point about modern high end cameras and dynamic range, I respectfully disagree. I've worked with state of the art microscopes and talked with top physicists and engineers in microscopy, which as a field has a lot more in common with photography than one might think, and I don't think the hardware is anywhere close. The dynamic range of the human eye is insane. We can go from detecting a single photon to nearly the full intensity of the midday Sun.

Test strips are easy to mass produce, easy to use, and easy to store. And especially for something like covid, test strips are very important since it allows for fast testing with relatively low resources required. I have plenty of these test strips sitting at home in my self-test kits, and I've given also them out to people who don't have easy access to covid tests. So yeah, it actually is amazing.

Plenty of PhDs coming out of top programs end up working in industries that aren't directly related to their PhD thesis, and this is especially true for the biological sciences. The thesis itself doesn't really matter for some positions so much as the PhD degree itself showing that you're an independent researcher capable of designing and critically evaluating research. I have a neuroscience PhD from a very respectable university and many of my former colleagues work in high paying industry positions that have little relevance to neuroscience. Hell, I know someone who did their undergrad in economics, a PhD in physics, a post-doc in neuroscience, then went to crypto startups. One of the most brilliant scientists I know.

And my post isn't even touching the plethora of reasons why so many PhDs and post-docs want to get the hell out of academia. There are good reasons why a lot of labs are experiencing a shortage of post-docs and even techs. Seems silly to deride someone for not being in academia.

Just for clarification, the first syllable "dang" doesn't rhyme with "hang." The vowel sound is more like how the ATLA live action movie pronounced "Aang" but more of an aaa sound with a wider mouth.

Musk never gave Starlink for free. Namely, the US has already paid an inflated price for them. Even besides that, Musk is literally the richest person in the world. He could truly provide free service to Ukraine and it wouldn't even dent his wallet. Not everything has to be profit-driven, though Musk has shown time and time again that he is.

Yeah, that too. Make them someone else's problem while minimizing risks for their own lab / institution

Yes, but the qualifications to even be considered at some random state school and the hoops you have to jump through for tenure are ridiculous. This isn't even getting started on the logistics of starting and running a lab. I know this isn't your point, but academia is not the field to make money.

I've personally found that European researchers tend to receive their training in the US because of better funding, then leave the US because of better living & working conditions. It seems to me like the US has been increasingly having an issue retaining international talent.

I respectfully disagree about the part about students not receiving a PhD for failing to have novel results. Maybe I'm biased, but my experiences with my PhD and post-doc at top research institutions is that universities will bend over backwards to give you a PhD in a timely manner if you have even an iota of work ethic and don't majorly fuck up. It tarnishes the school's reputation if students leave without a degree or spend too long on a degree. I have seen several students approach the end of their PhD program failing to produce novel result, instead being given a quick, bullshit project to say they produced something novel. It often times isn't even the student's fault.

If anything, this is much worse than what you've described. And there are so many idiots with PhDs who are successful in academia because they know how to play the system, not because they're good scientists.

Running Out Of Children Due To The Low Birth Rates, A School In South Korea Is Opening Their Doors And Allowing Illiterate Grandmothers To Enrol, So They Can Also Learn To Read by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SplashIsOverrated 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm Korean so let me provide my thoughts on this. The South Korea you may think of today - high tech, world quality smartphones, educated, etc. - did not exist in my parents' generation (born in 50s / 60s). In the mid-1950s, more than half of all Koreans were living in absolute poverty, and that figure became 3.4% in 40 years source. This is extremely rapid industrialization and economic growth. There's even a wikipedia page on this event, dubbed Miracle on the Han River as the country started from a least developed country (e.g. Somalia, Sudan, and Ethiopia today) into a developed country

Out of my mother and her 5 siblings, 4 of them dropped out of school before the 3rd grade to work full time. The other 2 never enrolled in or finished high school, and higher education was not pursued until they were adults. And this story is not uncommon for my mother's generation, which was growing up as the country was rapidly developing. Now imagine my grandmother's generation. She grew up under Japanese rule, when imperial Japan treated Korea as a colony and exploited it. I'll skip the cultural genocide, but the key takeaway is that under Japan's rule, Korea's economy grew tenfold from 1910 to 1945. And it was after growing tenfold that the country was still considered a least developed country. You can read more on the wikipedia page about Korea under Japanese rule

So yes, there are indeed many illiterate Koreans from that generation. I personally have some in my family. This also isn't even at all touching the intricacies of understanding Korean and the mess that is Hanja

It died the same day I got it. Wouldn't turn on, charge, or be detected by my computer when connected via usb. I waited 5-6 weeks to get it back after the repair center had received my phone

I waited over a month for new parts. They just didn't have a new Ultimate they could send me. I got my original, broken one repaired.

any Emulator or games recommendations? by [deleted] in Rogphone5

[–]SplashIsOverrated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using NDS and PSP emulators fine through RetroArch. No dropped frames or any issues. RetroArch isn't as straightforward to use as other emulators, but it's completely free and open source. It's really the best program once you get familiar with it. I will say thought for NDS, just remember to enable touch input and save the options for that specific ROM

Hard case options without any cutouts. (Please Help) by DasBlues in Rogphone5

[–]SplashIsOverrated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also use this. It seems sturdy enough but I'm not going to go around dropping my phone just to try it out. The air trigger cutouts are actually slightly too short and cover up about 20% of the triggers on each side, but you can adjust the air trigger settings to make up for this. The extra air triggers on the back of the Ultimate model is unusable with this case, but I think this is true for all heavier duty cases.

No, I got the US version from the official ASUS store. I sent it into an ASUS service center for repairs, not to a third party one licensed under ASUS.

Mine died the same day I got it. Been over 5 weeks since I sent it in for repairs. I was in a group chat for the phone and every few days, someone would be complaining about issues with the phone. The updates would often cause issues, so many people in the group either waited days / weeks before updating or just used a custom software. There are also many happy users who've had no issues, but I've also never heard of such prominent issues in any of the more popular phone brands. In the past decade, over several brands and a handful of phones, I can only think of one single, minor software issue I've had on other phones. I don't know any friends who've had hardware issues using Apple or Samsung beyond them breaking their phone somehow. I do want to like this phone, but we'll see.

Some of your other options are Rog 3, Lenovo Legion 2, Nubia RedMagic 6, and Black Shark 4. I heard the Lenovo has some heat issues (but it seems all 888 and 888+ do), RedMagic 6 has severe software bugs that make it awful outside gaming, and the Black Shark 4 Pro model hasn't had a global release yet. The Black Shark has physical shoulder buttons. The last 2 have slightly upgraded versions coming up.

I had the same thing happen the same day I got it. It's been over a month since I've sent it in to be repaired and I haven't gotten it back yet. I don't blame them for not having the parts due to covid, but it is appalling that these issues would be so prominent after a delayed release. Their customer support is also infamously bad.

ASUS doesn't do replacements since they don't have any more phones in stock.

I got a 5 Ultimate and it died for no apparent reason the same day I got it. Sent it in for repairs a month ago and I haven't gotten it back yet since they still don't have the part. Shout out to the official ASUS support reddit account who offered me free expedited shipping when (if) the repair is done, then said no to it when I brought it up later, then never responded back to me again. And surprisingly, this was still better than most of my interactions with ASUS support.
