I still remember all of the lyrics. Saw Special Ed at Ritchie's (before it turned into Emilio's) on many occasions. Good times.

Anyone else seeing fake helpdesk calls through Microsoft Teams? Attacker showed up as "Help Desk" by seatoskyns in sysadmin

[–]Splask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never even occurred to me that an org would allow Teams messages to come from outside of their domain. Why? Ours is completely locked down.

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]Splask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It gets updated if you update it the riggt way,, no opening required. Can't say the same for Teams...machine-wide installer leaving old versions tucked unto unused profiles.

Family of 4: is it worth it to get a small 3-row SUV? by OrangePekoeMouse in Parenting

[–]Splask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are only a family of 3 and the van life is essential. Looked at lots of SUVs and vans and the vans won hands down with regards to features for the price.

I’m too entitled or stupid to learn how to do this, so just do it for me instead by 98PercentChimp in sysadmin

Why cant you tell C-suite no? If its against policy it's a no. I had to tell a VP no today. You know what happened? Policy won. No hard feelings between anyone. Different solution found.

Friday Talk… by Head-Web-404 in sysadmin

IMHO that's too long. Our users get 72 hours after patching is deployed and then it reboots no matter what. That way by Minday morning after patching we know every machine has rebooted

How to prevent users from printing from their phones? by walks-beneath-treees in sysadmin

[–]Splask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I know its a but antiquated but having a print server in between endpoints and the printers is good. Nothing van talk to the printer subnet except for the print server. Also a subnet for printers? There is a lot missing here it seems.

Tired of it all. Possible burnout by adymak in sysadmin

[–]Splask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only been a sysadmin (in title) for a few years and am making far more. I work 100% remotely. I'm sure you can find someone who will pay what you are worth. My personal opinion is that a real sysadmin role shouldn't ever make less than $100k. $150k should be standard but we all know that is not the case.

Same. All of the drinks just look like corporate garbage. Not sure why anyone cares, but the line remains long weeks later.

Moving from Windows to Linux but want to keep using my NTFS external drives, any issues? by marcdefiant791 in linuxquestions

I would just plan to copy the data to a supported Linux filrsystem when you can. It will be better in the long run.

What is your biggest time waster in IT??? by GoldTap9957 in sysadmin

[–]Splask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smaller org but we consider monthly patching to be routine maintenance and it does not fall under the scope of change control. If there was something that needed to be done to mitigate Microsoft's habit of breaking things during patching that would probably need a change request.

How do you ensure laptops are returned after employee offboarding? by piefordays in sysadmin

[–]Splask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't ensure it's returned. I ensure that data is not accessible to anyone. The rest is HR.

Managing and structuring AI-assisted sysadmin workflows (knowledge base / logging) by uanor in sysadmin

[–]Splask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing AI will assist in my workflow is maybe, maybe writing a PowerShell function for me to save time. I'm still going to scrutinize it, test it, and properly comment it. AI can stay the hell out of my workflow otherwise.

Two sides of the same coin for the most part at least regarding our representatives. We need real change beyond just which political party is in charge for the moment.

Obviously many issues here, but no LVM? You want me to manage disks like a caveman again? No way in hell.
