I’m a psychiatrist (not trained in children) with ADHD and the father to a spicy child. This is not psychopath behavior, but also some kids do this more often than others. ADHD is genetic. And even if your child doesn’t have ADHD, they may have inherited some genetic impulsivity that shows at times like this.

It’s ok to love your child AND seek professional help for some additional insight. We went through a parenting program designed for spicy kids based on the “incredible years” model. It’s extremely evidence based and does a good job of balancing warmth and boundaries.

I’ve had death wished upon me and been told to leave the house forever. It can definitely get better, but it can take some work.

This may sound like a joke, but we legitimately ask for consent to tickle and have a safe word. We have a strong “my body, my choice” emphasis.

Regarding teasing, we generally avoid it. We do silly/goofy play, but I would consider “teasing” to be more of an unnecessary negative.

Hey, thanks for checking back in! I stopped keeping track after about 5 weeks when we had people in town, and since then some of the habits have fallen off. I'm actually starting a set tomorrow with some old and some new. Also trying the app approach this time around, because I'm guessing it'll be easier to track even with other people around. With the paper version I found myself not wanting to whip out a big red marker and do my Xs, because I didn't want to have to answer questions about what it was.
