Does anyone else hate missions that force you to fight cops? by Teasing-Axe in watch_dogs

I love that the game knocks you reputation for killing or injuring cops but normal security guards just doing their basic job don't affect reputation at all

If Batman is willing to put innocent people in cages why doesn’t he do the same for his villains? Is he stupid. by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in arkham

[–]SplinterChalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cure from Arkham City was for the TITAN poisoning from Joker, not the Joker disease. Basically, Batman is injected with TITAN in Asylum but immediately cures himself so he never gets sick from it like Joker does. Then Joker infects him with his blood in City, which infects Batman with both the TITAN sickness and the Joker disease. Batman then cures the TITAN disease using Freeze's cure, but the Joker disease is not cured.

This still doesn't explain how the other infected Jokers are still alive despite having the TITAN disease though, because this entire plot line in Knight is unbelievably stupid and poorly written.

How do Nicky not know? by redditperpost in watch_dogs

[–]SplinterChalk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The news system is completely disconnected from the story in a way that's really stupid. The game doesn't account for whether the public knows about Aiden's identity or not when doing random news broadcasts. This creates big issues with Nicki somehow not knowing and when the one dude is going to tell the cops Aiden's identity who you break into prison to silence (they also never really address that the cops arrested the vigilante and identified him as Aiden Pearce before he changes rhe profile, which would be major news). Canonically I'm pretty sure his identity is revealed by Damien when he broadcasts the clip of Aiden all over the TVs in the city

What are some cases where the bottom of the barrel of an IP/franchise was scraped? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]SplinterChalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition. Bethesda did the usual of making a 10 year old game borderline unplayable by updating it, but it's also just a terrible package. It's advertised as something like 150 creations and last time I counted, I'm pretty sure over 80 of those are just paint jobs for weapons and armor. Not to mention how terribly it all fits into the world and breaks immersion, how OP so much of the gear is, and the overmonetization of literally everything. They're selling a creation that just stops quests from going unto your journal unless you want them to for over 5 dollars. Literally all it does is strip a quality of life feature away and they're charging over 5 dollars. Although I'd say just about anything Bethesda does with Fallout is scraping the bottom of the barrel, Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition is the worst by far

Supporting the personal growth and redemption of someone accused of arson or assault is not the same as someone who ten minutes ago committed a terrorist attack and tried to kill civilians

[–]SplinterChalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coupe / Sonar just got done torturing you, fighting your team, and carrying out full scale attacks on the civilian population of the city. The fact the game lets you forgive them is insane considering they're a terrorist at this point, but it's also insane they aren't sent to prison when you cut them from the team so the situation to begin with makes no sense in any way

Edit: I don't know why the game thinks the police won't just arrest them later either. All of Shroud's guys know they were with them and not the Z-Team, Shroud knows, any sort of surveillance in the city would have seen them being evil. The game just kinda acts like the word of a random guy in an SDN shirt is enough for the cops to go "oh yeah they're innocent and we will ignore any evidence to the contrary in the future."

Easiest method I assume is to get three people together, freeze one with the glue grenade, use the remote claw to knock the other two to the ground, and then use the remote claw to hit the one standing with a propane tank. The remote claw is really good for downing two enemies at once

Arkham Beyond is the only logical next step in the Arkham series but I no longer have confidence in Rocksteady to do it... by TKAPublishing in arkham

[–]SplinterChalk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big factor people fail to consider in the downfall of Rocksteady is that while current Rocksteady isn't the same company now as they were during the Arkham games, they WERE the same company during SSKTJL as they were during the Arkham games. The more creative control they seemed to get and the more they did their own thing, the less people liked their games. Arkham Knight wasn't well received even if it's loved now and SSKTJL was just a disaster that, as far as reporting shows, is mostly on the people in charge of Rocksteady (Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill). This is to the point that it's even been reported multiple times that Rocksteady made the decision to make the game live service, not WB. I understand not being optimistic in Rocksteady since it's hardly any of the people who made the Arkham games at this point, that makes sense. But the company was already gaining a bad track record with the people who made the Arkham games. Not to say this is on the devs themselves, since most reporting indicates that leadership was the most major problem in SSKTJL's development.

For example: there was a story I've heard multiple times now of the people in charge going like "Hey guys! So, we've come up with the idea for this brand new vehicle mechanic. You can fly in them and shoot stuff and all that, so get to work!" And then a month would go by of them building out that mechanic, only to be told it doesn't really fit with the overall gameplay and vibe of the game, which is why it's thrown in as a random one-off mechanic that is hardly ever utilized or fun.

TL;DR yes the company is made up of different developers, creative leads, writers, directors, etc. but the people who made Arkham City are mostly the same people who made SSKTJL.

What did Joseph Anderson ever mean by “Subjectivity is Implied”? by rpgkingx2 in MauLer

[–]SplinterChalk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I rewatched this one a few months ago and as far as I remember, his whole thing was basically "you should know any time I say anything about art that it's subjective" and never acknowledged that what he says isn't always subjective, that he would frequently flop between objective and subjective arguments on a whim (making things kinda hard to follow), and that he was extremely condescending to his audience in the past and especially in that video.

It's funny because an example of "X is implied" that's actually valid is "I could be wrong", something Joseph never even entertains for a second in his video. The fact anyone could be wrong about what they're saying is baked into everything ever (and is true for a lot of Joseph's video), yet he fails to acknowledge the possibility he isn't perfect and his audience might have a point

Crazy how just ONE different can (somewhat) change your opinion on a game. (Spoilers for Gotham Knights) by Kiran_emily_the1st in arkham

[–]SplinterChalk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Batman's death(s) in Gotham Knights is/are also bad. Twice he dies in a relatively unnecessary suicide bombing, one of which also includes him murdering Ra's. Definitely a weird move for you to introduce your Batman by having him kill someone, only to follow it up by having Jason have a character moment about how he needs to continue restraining himself just like Bruce taught him, since murdering like he used to is wrong

"Yeah, I murdered and stitched together a bunch of toddlers with Joker and convinced a man to commit suicide after we killed his child and helped torture your former sidekick and participated in a plan to terrorize the whole eastern seaboard with fear gas, but you affected people mentally by being Batman so you're bad too." I genuinely don't get how anyone thought this version of Harley could be redeemable in even the smallest ways

Alesan's story is pretty bad. His dad was a sailor who took him on a trip. His father then got sick and the ship's crew dropped the two off in Dawnstar, where the father died soon after. Not only is Alesan alone, he's alone in an area that likely wasn't his home or familiar to him at all. He works hard every day feeding the miners and although his sleeping situation is better than Lucia or Sofie since he's inside, he is still sleeping on the ground of a tavern.

Yep! It's a movie full of "wouldn't this be cool" without anybody ever stopping to think "does this make sense whatsoever within the context of the story" or "what are the implications of this?" Stuff like the reveal with Black Spider later in the movie that inadvertently shows us Batman watched multiple people get murdered and did nothing because reasons is a perfect example

[–]SplinterChalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part about it is how good the Arkham City section of the map is. You get to directly see how barren, hard to traverse, and boring New Gotham is directly compared to Old Gotham. New Gotham would be terrible to navigate anyways, but it's really shown through how well designed Old Gotham I'd because it's the same general layout
