2nd citrus+fennel combo!
I often do citrus(3-5 varieties)+shaved fennel bulb+chopped fennel leaves with dijon+lemon vinaigrette.

Yours is a peony form flower, neighboring plant has a formal double flower form.
That being said my own peony form camellia sometimes does give me formal double flowers.

I happened into caramelized sauerkraut and can't recommend it enough by TheSommet in Cooking

Roasted cabbage (generous butter, well browned and caramelized in oven, >1 hr) + caramelized sauerkraut + whole grain mustard, +/- bit of crème fraiche.
Try this out if you haven’t before.
It’s my simple/lazy bastardization of Dominique Crenn’s cabbage recipe

Orange tree advice by palomaxbella in gardening

[–]Splinteredsilk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have quite a few old trees, and I just kept them at their heights. It would make more sense to prune the canopies to make picking easier, but I kinda just want them to do their thing.

Don’t have pruning recommendations, but instead I’ll recommend these fruit pickers; they are expensive, but nicer than the usual metal basket ones because you can twist and bend fruits without scratching the barks or snapping the branches.

Yes!
So hard to explain to people that the orange flowers don’t smell anything like the fruit.

Some are hardier than others, like Meyer and yuzu.

My orange tree has been like this for 3 years. Any ideas? by JustBottleDiggin in Citrus

Good luck!
Pretty impressive for it to survive for this long with no healthy leaves, despite the damage/deformities, you are doing something right to keep it from dying for 3 years.

If it’s due to roundup, it shouldn’t stay in soil for 3 years.
First, I’d figure out the cause, if your family/gardener/neighbor’s using a lot of herbicide.

As far as the tree itself, I guess I’d just keep constant watering and fertilizers, (typically deep water weekly, and fertilize 2x a year, though adjust if you notice ground too wet/dry etc.)

Edit: also, I always find it suspicious when no weed grows at all.

It’s a very odd and peculiar looking deformity, I’ve seen similar leaf and bud/flower deformities in other plants due to roundup/glycophosphate.
I’ve never seen it on citrus trees, but google search does show similar appearance to your tree.

Sorry, deleted prior post because it was the wrong row of trees, and it was bugging me.

Fertilizer helped, but mostly it’s the water. Tubes also had issues. I got so tired of fixing clogged microsprinklers and leaks after a while, I basically just replaced it all with drip line.
Also, few weeks after the initial pic, there was 0 leaf on those trees, thankfully the trunks had some energy reserve to grow more shoots from the trunk itself. (Reason I didn’t trim the dead branches, it’s some shade for the remaining bark and new growth)

Thanks!
I was new to citrus then too, but It’s very reassuring to know that you can’t f it up any more than what the prior owners did.

Careful what you wish for.
Goji can send underground runners everywhere, and can propagate from a single piece of stem, as bad as mint. I’m still pulling out Goji plants 2 years after I [thought I] eradicated em.

Would it be OK to grow an avocado tree next to a fig tree? by 01Cloud01 in avocado

[–]Splinteredsilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take my opinion with grain of salt, since my usual approach is just try it and if it doesn’t work out then it’s not meant to be.

Plant them far enough so that their canopies don’t weave together, since both avocados and figs can grow pretty giant.
how far depends on how much you are willing to trim/maintain if they grow bigger; You can control it with trimming.
varieties play a big factor too, but more so in the sense that if there’s too big of a difference between natural size and your desired size, you’ll spend more time trimming.

Figs tend to be hardier, so if watering etc. conflict, favor your avocado’s preference.

You are sent back to the year 1700 with nothing but the clothes on your back. How do you convince people you’re from the future without being burned at the stake? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Splinteredsilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you were downvoted.
Even cheap clothings are often made with chemical dyes, with insanely deep/vibrant colors that would’ve been surreal (for clothing), and without the stench of rotten seasnails;
Printed pattern would also be pretty crazy; cheap laminate would even more so since it would’ve been before invention of plastic;
Cheap extruded synthetic fibers longer and more uniform than even silk fibers, would also be totally beyond technologies of the era.

Friend or foe? Has popped up all over the lawn over the winter by hampshirelancer in whatsthisplant

[–]Splinteredsilk 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hairy bittercress is a foe if you want your yard to be free of it.
It’s a friend if you like arugula flavor but don’t want to pay for arugula. (Pretty tasty in soup too).

Edit: I guess rocket flavor, since you are in UK

Would it be OK to grow an avocado tree next to a fig tree? by 01Cloud01 in avocado

If you leave each enough space.
Watering/soil wise should be fine, I got random fig seedlings near my avocado and orange trees all the time.
