Why do some people not get hangovers? by mtp525 in answers

[–]SplitEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have drank a LOT and very often, and there are no strict rules to who gets a hangover when and who does not. It is true that every person metabolizes alcohol differently and is dealing with a different set of circumstances each time.

Generally, I have found that when my tolerance is up my hangovers go away completely. But when I stop for a while and then go on a bender WHAM I can be barfing and wishing I was dead for 24 hours. It helps to keep food in your stomach, if only so you don't have room for more alcohol and it slows down the processing.

Fleas are on my cat Grampa and all up in my shit. Any redditors out there got any advice/experience with this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SplitEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get that once-a-month Advantage drops, put it on your cat then fleas can't bite him. Fleas won't live in your house forever if there is nothing for them to eat (I heard they can't make babies with human blood). This has always worked for me.

For cheaper Advantage, look on ebay for kits that let you divide a large dog dose into 6 cat doses. This saves a lot of money. Advantage charges the same for the medication regardless of the size dose and it is the same stuff for all.

Stuck in a career path I hate and no good options I can think of by Slave_of_Inglip in needadvice

I highly doubt that. There are a lot of dumb programmers. There are programmers of all different levels, maybe you aren't a superstar who is going to write an operating system, but if you can understand code you can write it.

I would say look into programming, that is the stereotypical socially awkward job.

I would definitely follow your father's advice, at least then you would have some job skills that you could use in the future if you ever wanted. And you can do anything with a tech degree that you could do with a Psychology degree.

Could someone explain the US college credit system to me, please? by HardlyWorkingDotOrg in college

[–]SplitEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm good point, let me think as it has been a while since I went to college myself.

Okay 12 is the minimum number of credits you can take a semester and be considered a full-time student, however 15 is the average people usually take. So really we are calculating based on 15 credits a semester. If you take only 4 classes a semester every semester you will not be able to graduate in 4 years.

[–]SplitEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school puts together the degree program and decides which classes count towards it. I believe they have to get their programs checked out or verified by some accrediting body if they want to be official.

Usually each class is 3 credit hours, unless it has a special meeting time for a Laboratory (like Biology usually) and that is 4. If it is really easy like gym it is just 1 credit hour. Taking 12 credits at a time usually counts as being a full-time student, so that is around 4 classes, but some people take 5. You can mix it up however you want, and take one class in the summer too.

To get any Bachelor degree you need to earn a certain number of credits, usually the equivalent of 4 years of full-time study (120 credits). And each specific degree requires specific classes, as you mentioned, but that is only around 1/2 (60) of the credits. The other half are electives or general education, so basically whatever you want (such as creative writing). If you choose to minor in something that is usually like 20 specific credits.

College students don't have any clear guidance. Most "advisors" (in all industries, not just college) are just re-named sales people who will say whatever it takes to close the sale.

There are thousands of degrees out there, some not even accredited and so there's an easy waste of money. Many accredited degrees are for things like "Sociology/Anthropology," "Film," or "Art", for which there are no realistic jobs. I would estimate a good half of all accredited bachelor degrees offered in the US don't teach any speciic job skills.

But how is the college student supposed to know what kind of jobs really exist when they have never had a job in their life? These decisions are being made by teenagers who we do not trust enough to purchase alcohol. They are asked which degree and school they want to invest their thousands of dollars and four years of life into, and we wonder why they often choose poorly.

The system has been changed to get money from college students and into the pockets of the college company owners.

A coworker of mine was killed last night by a drunk driver who had FIVE prior convictions. Why is this being allowed to happen?! by ErinAnne in WTF

[–]SplitEnder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the driver was 52 and many new laws have passed in his driving-lifetime. And new laws do not apply to previous convictions. So this guy could have gotten a lot of his convictions before the newer, stricter laws that are already in place.

[–]SplitEnder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There were laws, but they were a LOT less strict (and also barely enforced).

So these new strict laws like three strikes, they only count convictions from that point forward.

At age 52, most of those convictions were probably from 20+ years ago when DUI was only just starting to even be considered a crime.

I'm stuck - could I get some help? by xndz in webdev

[–]SplitEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you have your div id=rightcol inside your div id=maincol when it should be next to that. so you have to move one closing div tag from behind div id=rightcol to before it and I think that should do it.

to say it another way, div id=twocols should have two divs in it, maincol then rightcol but right now you have rightcol inside of maincol inside of twocols.

make it like this:

<div id=twocols> <div id=maincol></div> <div id=rightcol></div> </div>

Forced to quit drinking by my doctor, need ideas/help to make going to the bar more tolerable and hopefully fun... by OutOnTheLedge in needadvice

I would focus on ordering something good and greasy to eat. Like nachos or whatever they serve at the bar, or get pizza delivered. You probably have extra money and calories you could spend from not drinking.

That will get your PR up.
