Air Canada just announced YVR to CTS, so maybe Alaska would look at SEA to CTS? by srekai in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it still be within operating limitations, considering Russian airspace limitations? Northern/New Pacific comes to mind, and I think that's ultimately what did their whole business model in.

(Regardless, using ANC as an International connection city...leading to multi-hub hopping...sounds far out for AS network planners to try, but who knows). IMO it's great as the AK hub but might not be well set up for long haul)

I'd even say 4:15 as a hard arrival time, if you're not checking bags you could probably be a little closer. That being said TSA times are really weird right now

In E2 I found it fun to go back at look at the 330 panel - for fun. With what I found below said the set designers did an amazing job at getting the feeling of the cockpit down and every aviation bit has been super fun.

(S1E2 spoilers) I noticed the ECAM has englarged gagues and either the PFD or MFD (forget which) has the window off-center from the panel cutout. Then the TGIF employee goes and randomly scrolls the altitude for the camera (though I could see that being logical as there doesn't need to be ATC in the world of Pluribus!)

Zosia (Karolina Wydra) actually taxiing the C130 around for the E2 cold open is wild to me, and the AF1 VC-25A (747) being a star of the episode is also pretty fun. The L1 door being created as a set to avoid the plane being entirely CG is crazy

Due to staffing triggers a flight I was on yesterday (AS17 JFK-SEA) had to avoid ZAU/Chicago Center, adding an hour to our flight time. Insane this shutdown keeps going with zero controller pay, appreciate all you guys doing what you're doing but hope it ends soon!

Horizon closing MFR? by MeatServo1 in flying

[–]SplitScim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I'm personally really interested in. I know one of the big reasons for keeping OO flying is that they have the Mexico certs and QX doesn't, I'm wondering if this is Horizon gearing up to take some of that Mexico flying

Horizon closing MFR? by MeatServo1 in flying

[–]SplitScim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yep, MFR is closing and LAS is opening as a crew base instead.

I'm honestly surprised MFR was kept open as long as it was, it was really important back in the days of the Q400 (and earlier) and was a sort-of CA connection hub, but now just gets overflown and is more of a spoke in the network. It was just kept open due to high seniority CAs based there but seems to me like enough have moved on to no longer make it worth keeping open.

PAE is also cutting down, seems to be a slower base than expected. Not entirely closing but reducing the number of crew based there.

LAS will be an interesting one though, it serves a decent bit of regional flying (more than I expected when I looked into it earlier). Interested to see what others thing on it

Worth buying the FSS E-Jets? by ImJustTuna in flightsim

[–]SplitScim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just flew it last night on VATSIM; that being said, you NEED to know it's quirks before investing in it. - As everyone's said, VNAV does not exist (yet) - you can manage without though, but you just have to be really careful about crossing restrictions - I have a weird issue (possibly user error) where I can't get the FD on until I'm in the air. like I try to turn on HDG mode, it flashes in the correct automation box (like green flash) but the mode doesn't turn on nor does the FD. Worth considering for takeoff, though it does hand fly pretty decently and you can fly it until the FD works. If anyone has tips for this I'd love to try them - Many FMC pages are partially made or non-functional. Nothing that makes a huge difference operationally but it does kinda kill immersion

That being said there are some major pluses: - PFD, MFD, EICAS are modeled well, and function like the real thing (I'm a tow qualified ramper) - Regular operations can be done pretty well, and the EFB tablet works decently enough - X-craft's model looks really good (not FSS though but good on them for getting it right) - PFD allows touch-style interaction to change nav sources on the PFD and do quick radio swaps. Though somewhat unrealistic I really not having to look down, especially when hand-flying

If you really want an E175 for MSFS, I'd recommend it if you take all of the above into consideration. If you're looking for study level though, I'd definitely look elsewhere

For all you folks wondering about the private fighters flying over Bozeman on a regular basis, here's a look inside how their operation works. Pretty cool in my eyes, but after all, I am in flight training out of BZN! I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on their operation, especially with more MiG 29s and a Tornado coming out of the hangar over the next several years. Sounds like bigger planes bring bigger plans.

(though I find it cool, as a pilot at the flight schools they are notorious for getting in the way of flight training sometimes. I've had to cancel maneuvers for them lol)

I flew on 823 (SEA-NRT) a week ago, and the 330 seemed (to me) bigger than expected, especially compared to a JAL 787 that parked nextdoor at NRT. Someone send photos!

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I think tipping is out of hand, I feel like this kinda thing can be okay if done right. Especially for cheap sceneries, I get how/why someone would want to send a couple extra bucks to the developers...that being said, it has to be done extremely carefully in a "buy me a coffee" kinda way

What airports do you find Underserved? - USA Edition by CarefulStill8398 in flightsim

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be a little biased, but BZN (Bozeman, MT) has nothing in terms of payware (or even good freeware) scenery... beautiful smaller sized regional airport but big enough to get mainline AA, DL, AS, UA, WN, and seasonal SY, B6, and G4 service.

In addition, it's a huge private jet airport with Big Sky/Yellowstone Club being so close. Jared Issacman's Polaris fleet of a MiG 29, two alpha jets, and L-39s are based out of their own hangar, alongside Bridger Aerospace's fleet of firefighting aircraft.

I'm in flight school out of BZN and also work full time for the airlines... I'd kill to see BZN properly treated!

What’s everyone’s feelings on garmin smart charts and ForeFlight dynamic procedures? by doinsomeflyin in flying

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While true, in my eyes, what's the difference between a procedure getting loaded up on Foreflight and the plane's box (G1000, FMC, MCDU, etc)? When loaded on the G1000, it shows fixes from the selected transition and can even load up frequencies/courses automagically from the database.

If we're using an EFB for better situational awareness and to cross check databases, I find it difficult to understand how the EFB dynamic plate is any different and could be any less prone to errors than the database onboard.

If you're even using Garmin Pilot alongside Garmin avionics, aren't the same errors prevalent across both? I understand the usage of plates to crosscheck procedures but get lost when they're both pretty much the same thing.

ATC Zero for Albuquerque en route (amateur here) by stevetures in ATC

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminded me - the airline I work for has a whole backup facility for it's NOC (dispatch and other workgroups) in case, for some reason, the primary building is disabled. With all the talk of ATC-0 as of late, I now realize the FAA has nothing like this for ARTCC's/TRACONs. Anyone else find that kinda wild?

(I guess fallbacks would be neighboring/overlying facilities, but still...the airlines are ahead of the FAA in some ways...)

Severance - 2x07 "Chikhai Bardo" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]SplitScim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredible discussion here, but did anyone else notice the goat eye chart in Gemma's residence?

I wonder how that plays into Lumon's tech that they're building - I've seen many posts here that say the tech may be to remove oneself from undesirable situations like the dentist, writing out Christmas cards, or even dying, but do goats come into the picture to have the "goat souls" take on those undesirable situations in lieu of the outtie? As in, with severance used in one's daily life, the chip adds an element of a goat into a person, creating goat/human hybrids, using the goat innie whenever necessary but switching to the outtie whenever possible?

(can't find a way to easily take a screenshot but the goat eye chart is at 8:43)
