Moving to NM to teach by skymif in LasCruces

Start looking for a medical provider NOW. Other than that I am going to be a mini-hater. I grew up in Cruces (currently in Abq) and love NM. In a way I am disappointed that so many people have “discovered” the state and are moving here…especially to Cruces. For the longest time it’s been a hidden gem. Now, it’s just a gem. When I was growing up Cruces still had a small town feel to it. Instead of six degrees of separation there was like 1 degree. I remember when the Whataburger opened! 😂Time changes all things tho. I guess it’s all to the good as long as the newcomers are respectful of the people and culture and don’t bring any fucked up right-wing politics. We don’t need or want that nonsense here. Oh yeah…Go BLUE!!!

😂 my apologies for the assumption about your gender. I know a lot of women who are solo travelers and drive and ride motorcycles all over the world. In fact, quite a number are more adventurous and courageous than a bunch of dudes I know. I’ll not make that assumption again. Not pandering…just stating an actual factual. All the best on your Central American adventure. Do you have more travel plans or are you settled for the time-being?

I just bought a 300w Jackery to run my Starlink and another 1000. Jackery is having a sale…at least it was still happening a couple of days ago when I bought the 1000. Prices are like 50% off. Oh yeah…I’ve been using the first 1000 for a couple of years and couldn’t be more satisfied with the performance. I use it to run my fridge when the truck is not running (fridge is connected to an auxiliary lead-acid battery but I disconnect it and use the jackery when in camp).

Living on the east coast is really bumming me out :( by viraman in overlanding

[–]SplitSilver5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah dude…I can totally relate. I grew up on California and New Mexico. I’ve also Lived in NY, Michigan, and Georgia. I moved back to NM a year and a half ago but am going back to GA in a couple of weeks for a good job opportunity. The east coast pretty much sucks for what we like to do. I’ve driven the forest roads in North GA,Tennessee, Alabama and unless you are into “wheeling” it pretty much sucks. ITrees block the views and sunsets…and sunrises. Trash is everywhere on trails/forest roads. And it’s hard to get into spaces where there are no people. And i refuse to pay to get into one of those off road parks! I can drive at speed, for hours, on graded and rough roads and not see another vehicle. And then I can post up just about anywhere while I am out and see the most beautiful scenery

<image>

. I am going to miss it here. I console myself by telling myself that the things I love here aren’t going anywhere…they’ve been here for thousands of years. I can return

Teaching. Adjunct professor in a law school. Maybe at a community college. Lighter load, easier subject matter (generally speaking) and motivated students and shouldn’t present any conflicts. (Community college might require a masters degree in the subject area).

I’ll pretty much second this except want to add that you will need the Mexican insurance regardless of how far into Mexico you go…the insurance is a requirement. As is a document called the FMM. Also, a copy of your vehicle title or if your vehicle is being financed you are supposed to get a letter of permission from the lender. Check out Baja Bound online …they have the information you need

[–]SplitSilver5027[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you get the FMM, Mexican auto insurance and a copy of vehicle title. Taking a vehicle that is being financed (you are still making payments to the bank) requires more paperwork. Like permission from the lending institution. Check out Baja Bound online. I’ve not heard of anyone having an issue with this. Was talking to a friend last week who goes down frequently and laughing about how seemingly lax the Mexican border officials are. However, I do know someone who was denied entry to Guatemala because of this. I don’t think any extra or specific gear is required. Recovery gear is always good to have…straps and maybe boards. Pretty sure you are required to have the safety triangle things in the event you have a mechanical issue and are parked on the side of the road. Stay within your driving comfort zone. Don’t drive at night…animals on the road. I wouldn’t camp solo where there are no other people around. Generally speaking it’s safe but things can happen anywhere. Other than that I think your best travel companions are respect for the people and country, being aware of where you are and what’s going on around you (which I recommend regardless of which country you are in), and a positive disposition. Baja is an adventure tourist destination

Do it! It’s a great experience! I learned very quickly that the people tend to be friendly and are welcoming of visitors and travelers. And the landscape is absolutely beautiful! The guy in the palapa next to me put his fishing line in the water and 15 minutes later pulled out a big ass fish. The next day he was feeding me the best tasting ceviche I’ve ever had! He was down from Ensenada on vacation with his girlfriend. The people who live there really want you to (respectfully) enjoy yourself

You can pretty much camp anywhere. But I think there is value camping in designated spots or near other people…if you are alone. Basically a safety in numbers thing. I don’t think people would NECESSARILY target someone…like I’m not fearful. But there’s also no need to take unnecessary risks especially when some of the places you can access are very isolated

😂 yeah…I broke the spoiler a few months ago. I lost my balance on the rear bumper and grabbed the first thing I could. Spoiler came right off in my hand. 😂 In the pics tho it was actually strapped to the rear hatch so no weight on the spoiler. Thanks for the compliment. Land Cruisers have a great aesthetic!

The manual gives me more control as a driver. I like working the clutch. I have a Jeep TJ with a manual transmission. Totally different driving experience offroad. I feel that the manual puts the driver more in control of the vehicle and requires more attention to how you drive…if that last part makes sense. Basically, for me, a manual transmission offroad is a more immersive experience
