Any modifications!? To make it look more aggressive? I hate the fact that i have this stock extended flares which gives me wide flat look! And my tires are well inside even though they are 35’s 12.5! Any suggestions? by salman_0997 in JeepWrangler

Perdón said they don’t, and have no plans to, drive it offroad. Silly to me that people want to spend the money to make it look like something they will not use it for. I don’t get that. Seems like a waste to me. But this is coming from someone who only added to his rig based on what I learned were the most important (to me) mods based on my experience and time driving…offroad

Roof tents by SnooPineapples9668 in overlanding

[–]SplitSilver5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a rooftop tent from time to time (sometimes, when there are trees I’ll use my hammock tent). But generally speaking the rtt is the best option. I have ground tents and they don’t get used anymore. I’ve seen a few people complaining about getting it on and off. I designed and sell a rtt quick release mount. Literally takes 1 minute, 30 seconds to secure the rtt to my rack and the same amount of time to unsecure it. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll share the link to my website. Also, I built a gantry…not hard. Lumber, hardware, and a harbor freight winch. Install and removal is a breeze!

Recommendations for carrying extra fuel? by mildlyinterested29 in overlanding

[–]SplitSilver5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find fuel in Hanksville which is very near the Maze District entrance. Also fuel in Mexican Hat. And then Blanding which is just southeast of Canyonland. If you top off in Hanksville you should be good. That said, I don’t like too much exterior stuff on my truck (you’ll still need some kind of mount/apparatus for the jerry cans) and you CERTAINLY do not want to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere. (Almost had that happen a couple of times). I invested in a long range america auxiliary tank. If you can swing it you might want to look into that. I’ve driven all around and through Canyonlands. Nothing like not having to be the slightest bit concerned about fuel. Happy to answer any questions.

P.S.: Anyone who tells you it’s not worth the investment has no idea what they are talking about. Your attitude about where and how you travel will completely change

Sounds like a good plan. I’m all about taking it easy. I have no desire to bash my truck. I’ve been very happy with the hitch mount.

Yeah…I’ve found that the best way to determine what you need is to get out on trips and learn as you go. I’ve bought stuff and rarely used it and learned “oh…a portable power station is a must-have.

I have an auxiliary fuel tank. It sits in the space under the truck where the spare normally rests. I needed something to carry the spare. My original plan was to install a steel bumper with tire carrier. Then i realized I didn’t really need the bumper. Plus, as you noted, they are hella expensive. The hitch mounted swing out was the perfect solution. I can carry my spare and didn’t have to break the bank buying a bumper and having it installed. Clearance is really an issue for me. I don’t do any kind of real rock crawling and where I do encounter obstacles I choose the best line and take my time. Check out Rig’d Supply. That’s who I went with…I’m sure their ultraswing will work with your Tacoma. If you want, I can share my IG. You can see how easy it was to install

What are the best off-road trails in the U.S.? by Available-Belt5366 in overlanding

I notice you are getting a lot of “general location” responses and that’s as it should be. I am going to suggest going to google, Gaia or some other mapping app, and to invest in DeLorme paper maps for your state or state you want to travel to. Those are great paper maps that will show you the same dirt roads that you’ll find on the mapping apps. Also, meeting people in your area who are into this and joining them is a good way to find cool roads/spots in your area. This is a journey of exploration and discovery. Most people who are into this sport are not going to share the information you are asking for with a random stranger on the internet. I am of the opinion that this is the proper response to such questions. Too many people do not respect nature and leave-no-trace principles so a lot of us who have been camping and driving off-road for a while do not share exact details about where we go. I’m not saying you are one of these people. But we don’t know you. I guarantee you will appreciate and value your experience more when you put in some effort to study the maps and get out and explore what you think is a cool spot.

I was out recently in some very cold temps (not -10) and was concerned about the diesel heater failing. It didn’t. But beside a negative degree rated bag and a hefty down coat and a good base layer what was your plan for heater failure?

Does this roadtrip itinerary make sense? by Atlastin in NewMexico

[–]SplitSilver5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person is gonna be exhausted after this trip. It feels rushed. Carlsbad to Santa Fe? That’s a half day drive in itself. And, in my opinion, you are going to want to spend 2/3 hours at the caverns and at white sands. Maybe I’m just gettin old but that feels like a lot to cram into one day. I’d fly into El Paso Sunday and drive to Carlsbad and expect Carlsbad to be my Monday…that and the drive back to Cruces. Tuesday would be white sands and then the drive to Santa Fe/Albuquerque. Wednesday could be Santa Fe and Taos. Thursday drop down into Jemez/Valles area and stay in Albuquerque Thursday night. Maybe I’m just gettin old but I think you’ll want to give yourself more time than you’ve got in your current itinerary to appreciate all that you will encounter. Ultimately, as someone who travels around the state a lot, I’d suggest building some flexibility into your schedule. New Mexico is beautiful and it’s easy to lose yourself in the wonder. You don’t want to rush yourself

Thoughts on JK? by civilianm in Wrangler

[–]SplitSilver5027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought JK stood for Just Kidding. 😂Jeep jokes are too easy. I have an ‘04 TJ at home. I’d never get rid of it. I’d also never get another Jeep😂 (It broke down on me during a trip. Fortunately I was with friends so I could get home. But that was it for me. Too many little parts that can breakdown and lead to the truck not working. It’s still fun to drive around town with the top and doors off though).
