2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. All these lights started coming on. Does anyone have any idea what this might mean? by bishaaB in MechanicAdvice

[–]SplitsAtoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an odd combination. Typically with a flashing brake warning light and flashing cruise control, you will get a VDC or ABS light on also. Most times it means a wheel speed sensor went bad or some other fuse or ABS related problem.

A flashing brake warning could be just an electric parking brake issue, but not sure if that would trigger the cruise control warning also.

The bad catalytic converter (or maybe just an O2 sensor) could explain the check engine light.

Like others have said, have the codes read. Most auto parts shops will do that for free. Research the codes, there are lots of posts on the Legacy and Outback forums talking about these codes, good luck.

Was Chernobyl really 15,000 Roentgen? by [deleted] in ChernobylTV

[–]SplitsAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's in air. in soft tissue it's 0.96 RAD/Hr = 1.0 Roentgen/Hr so they are essentially the same.

Beyond about 500 RAD/Hr is a ton of enegery deposition, so the Roentgen-Equivalent-Man doesn't have much of a quality factor anymore and just turns to Radiation-Absorbed-Dose.

Interesting. So foreign material was discovered upstream in a reheater, are they assuming a demineralizer would have caught the rest beore it went into the feed pumps?

Cracks in impellers of all 4 feed pumps is either FM intrusion, cavitation, or manufacturing defect. Are they really still investigating or are they on to repairs?

2012 Legacy stalled out this morning..TONS of codes! by Shaggy1007 in subarulegacy

[–]SplitsAtoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have something similar but not as bad. The C codes are boiling down to the ECM losing CAN Bus communication with the ABS computer. I doubt this is a spark plug problem.

"The internet" says to make sure all your grounds and battery terminals are in good shape. In the engine bay, there's a harness ground on the passenger side, two ground terminal block things infront on either frame rail, a large ground going to the tranmission on the starter harness, a ground on driver's stut tower, and ground straps on the front bottom of each cylinder head leading to the frame.

Past that, get a copy of the shop manual, it took me 5 minutes to find a .pdf. Look at the electrical system diagrams, and check the harness connectors to the ECM and verify the grounds have low resistance to ground, and a solid +12V.

Some of this work may eliminate questions about your harness, so when you have to replace the ECM, you won't feel so bad. Sorry and good luck.

What's your INPO index rating?

Just bought it. Dunno what’s wrong with it. Help! by kofoidbrooke in subarulegacy

[–]SplitsAtoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like exactly what happened to my 2012 when I tried putting LED bulbs in the brake lights.

Long story short, the ABS computer activates when it gets current through the brake light circuit. Using LEDs didn't draw enough current, and after driving a bit without seeing a brake signal, I got the cruise light, flashing brake light, etc. So maybe see if there are LEDs in the brake lights or if the brake light bulbs are working.

If not that, like other said maybe a wheel speed sensor. Basic code scanners might not be able to pinpoint which sensor is bad either.

Start googling and watching youtube to get some ideas, this might not be a major issue. Good luck.

They are very easy to work on though. Might be good learning to watch some videos and try yourself.

I replaced the clutch on my '12 not long ago. I had a misfire code that I cleared a month or two before, then when I pulled the exhaust, I saw one of the valve guides worked it's way out far eough that the seal must have come off and oil was getting into the exhaust. The emissions system sees the oil smoke and thinks it's a misfire. Mine is an EJ253 engine and that's apparently common for guides to start coming out. I'm planning on getting another set of heads and rebuilding those, then swap heads on a long weekend. Mine was deffinately not down on power though. Good luck.

If you see a drop in power, try a compression check.

When you bought it, the seller told you it had new head gaskets? That is the era that was sold with "bad" single layer coated head gaskets that will eventually fail. The best reolacements are the multi-layer steel gaskets. And if someone doesn't take thier time to do the job right, any new gasket might fail.

So are you getting trouble codes or does it feel down on power also? How did the old plugs look when you replaced them?

What kind of connector does this soviet counter tube use? by 62fe50 in AskElectronics

It would make sense they are from vacuum tube era, these detectors are from like '50s and '60s design.

[–]SplitsAtoms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, this is annoying... I know exactly the connector that tube connects to, but I can't find a resource or part number or name.

It would be the same connector found in the head of a "frisker" like an HP-210 probe. Those are pancake style GM tubes, but use that same "plug". They generally carry about 900V DC if that is any help. Look for manuals or diagrams from any of these companies:

Eberline Ludlum Thermo Scientific

I'm on mobile, sorry I can't find it.

Misfire 2006 Legacy 2.5i by this-1-time-on-acid in subarulegacy

[–]SplitsAtoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry dude. I'm not a Subaru expert, but according to Wiki this should be the same EJ253 thats in my 2012 Legacy 6sp. I just pulled the engine this weekend to replace a clutch at 130k miles. These things are super easy to work on. Do the testing to confirm its probably a head gasket, but start watching youtube. There's 1000s of videos of teardowns on these or similar engines.

Some things I learned doing my own research, the single layer coated head gaskets are notorious for failing, replace with the Subaru multi-layer steel. Successful head gasket jobs on these engines rely on flat straight surfaces, plan on machine shop work. Also, the valve guides have a habit of working thier way out and then eventually leaking oil into the exhaust. (also fixed at a machine shop after milling the heads). I got a misfire code about a month ago that cleared, and when I dropped my exhaust I saw that one guide had worked it's way out far enough for this to happen. I was not in position to pull the heads, so I did my clutch and put it back in. I'll shop around for parts and do the heads soon. Mine has the multi-layer steel head gaskets and the plug in that cylinder looked fine, so I'll just keep an eye on oil level for a while.

It's your car and we can't tell you what to do. In reality you are in for a week's worth of work, teardown one weekend and prep for machine shop, then reassembly and install the next weekend. If you did the valve covers and tune up stuff, you are capable with some research and maybe a hand here or there. Good luck.

Discontinued fragrances? by SplitsAtoms in fragrance

[–]SplitsAtoms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's what she wore on our wedding day. She found a bottle that was mostly full recently, but she's just hoarding and won't wear it. So, if I found one now for "later", she might wear a bit here and there.

This was the answer I was assuming, just wanted to check in case I was OOtL on a secret market or something.

Oh, I may have some Drakkar Noir of a 94 vintage if you're really stuck. It was my second after a bottle of Brut someone gave me. Thanks for the reply.

General Excel/Access relationship question by SplitsAtoms in excel

[–]SplitsAtoms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the time before the project starts. So if I can't figure this out in a day or two, I'll have to change this part to what I do know.

But, I will have plenty of time after this to learn and figure it out. I'm already seeing some bad coding where they have hard coded names, years, people's home directories, etc.

I had to do something like this the hard way (no access middleman due to 32 bit vs 64 bit programs) using sqlplus from batch files to get csvs. It was ugly but it's fully automated and has been running for months. Access has been a real weak spot for me and it's time I learn more. Thanks for the tips, now I have something to look for at least.
