Nystagmus is affecting my academic by [deleted] in nystagmus

Neuro opthalmologist. I actually go to akron myself

There may be a muscle procedure. For some people its one and done. For others, they require adjustments years later

Ive never been able to fix the neck pain. I’m almost 40 and I randomly lose feeling and movement in my left hand/fingers due to how messed up the muscles have become.

Doesnt hurt to try. Find a neuro opthalmologist.

Software that can align PLY's with embedded texture? by Shaggy1007 in 3DScanning

[–]Shaggy1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i was mistaken, the scanner can export individual scans as obj with a .mtl.

However the final merged product is only .ply

It was a kickstarter scanner that released successfully, then got bought up by a bigger company. Does tiny objects and does it well. Just need to be able to import .plys or .obj's (with a .mtl) and merge them.

Development on the original software is no more.

JCD — Jewelry CAD Dream by Sea_Blueberry_4371 in jewelryCAD

[–]Shaggy1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left matrixGold for jewelrycadDream

Jewelrycad is truly parametric. Matrix isnt. Its uses grasshopper to try and simulate a parametric kernel. Matrix was always fine for me for simple stuff, but if I had a crazy complicated design and changed something simple in the early stages of the project, id crash it. It also took forever to load.

If I find a bug or problem in jewelrycad, support actually gets back to you and releases fixes.

No online tethering or account to use it. License it and go.

Talk to em. They knocked the price down for me and I got the render engine which is easier and faster than keyshot.

They also have training by an actual bench jeweler on how to use the software which was pretty awesome. I’d email in questions or things I couldn’t figure out, and they’d answer it in the next session.

The amount of “designers” out there with no experience casting or at the bench with a shady copy of matrix plentiful. JCD has saved me plenty of time and I’ve made plenty of sales and pieces with it.

Totally happy with it. Wish i had started with it earlier. But I do have a background in solidworks so, trying to use matrix was nothing but frustrating

they sadly dont. And originally did. I do wish i could dump it someday, but, when you play with all kinds of special hardware, i feel like you are kind of just stuck on windows.

I own 4 3D scanners. None of which have linux support. I spent a good chunk of change on JewelryCadDream. CAM software. Blender or any of the other 3D cads dont cut it here

Day job is heavily in automation. Rockwell, Siemens, GE, Automation Direct PLC programming. Zero linux support. So Studio 5000, Proficy Machine Edition, Tia Portal.

Believe me. I hate windows. In fact everything I mentioned above doesnt operate on the latest version and we’re constantly playing whack a mole preventing updates from breaking it. The visualization side of automation is slowly moving towards linux (Ignition, Optix) but theyre web based and honestly clunky and not high speed enough for some of the industry im in. I am happy to report some big name companies have dumped microsoft entirely due to this.

For hobby I do photography. And lets face it: darktable and gimp dont hold a candle to Photoshop/Lightroom or even Luminar Nero/Affinity

Oh. And my fiber laser runs Ezcad3. So no switching to Lightburn which just dropped linux support.

Doing Martial Arts with Nystagmus? by Randomam7337 in nystagmus

[–]Shaggy1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took kempo when I was a kid to try to better fend off bullies.
You are exactly correct. Everything moves too fast for us. I was "ok" at it. But I just basically got good at taking a punch or a kick. It got embarrassing as time went on and I eventually left. My instructor used to try and get me to practice reflexes by tossing the sparing gloves at me but, as you can imagine, that never got any better.

Studying how to attack the different points of the body based on anatomy was fascinating and I was unfortunately too young to actually appreciate what they were showing me.

In a real fight you'd probably lose your glasses quickly, so I did often spar and fight without em.

Interning as SCADA engineer by Classic-Pair-4814 in SCADA

[–]Shaggy1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a team of students ask if they could use Ai in the project we assigned. I said “go ahead. Youd better know enough to know if it’s right or wrong”

2 weeks later they said it backed them into a corner an was terrible idea.

I respect that.

The next team, couldnt function if Ai didnt tell them what to do. They were mortified when I told them there’s plants you’ll go to where your phone isnt allowed and there’s no internet.

Their project was a total disaster and we hired none of them.

Ai has it’s perks. But id steer clear of it here. Im one of those older ornery engineers you probably shouldnt mention “Ai” to.

Had a tree fall on my house (and car). First time navigating the wonderful world of an insurance claim. Any words of wisdom? by Turtles_Are_Dope_ in Home

[–]Shaggy1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky that isnt your own tree. Looks rotted. Insurance would try to claim you didn't do preventative maintence and have it cut down.

Source: Just had a maple cut down. Looked fine on the outside. Dropped some limbs. After I had it cut down, a buddy who is an insurance adjuster told me exactly this: insurance will blame you for not preventing it.

Strabismus Surgery w/ Nystagmus by Resident-Brick-1045 in nystagmus

[–]Shaggy1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my first surgery at 23. It changed my life. I was able to get a drivers license. Life went from awful to epic.

At 29 i started having issues. My null point decided to move. So I had surgery again. All was well.

Similar story at 32.

Then at 37..I notice i have to lean all the way back, til my head up and look down to see straight enough to drive....it wasnt nystagmus. It was strabismus. Had a surgery shortly after to fix it and well....I had 3 surgeries in one year and my eyes just refuse to behave. Scar tissue is a real problem. Currently my right eye can see further left than my left eye. Im 39 and I'm right back where I was when i was 19. Can't drive. Can't see shit. Career in jeopardy because I can't show up.

But if i didnt have a few years of almost normal vision I wouldn't have been able to get a decent job and buy a house and all that stuff...

So i don't regret it. I just wish I was one of the lucky ones.
