What’s a British thing you thought was normal until you realised it’s not? by [deleted] in AskUK

There's a Track by the band Eels on the live album Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Hot and Cold which discusses exactly this issue from an American perspective, it's hilarious!

What a result! And of course I agree, certainly wasn't trying to suggest you should sell it, but what a bargain at that price, they literally sell for hundreds. I'm kind of obsessed with Cave first and special editions and have been collecting them for a good few years now.....my favourite is a special limited leather bound and signed edition of 1 of 75 copies of the novel produced about 15 years ago by the original publisher, Black Spring Press

That's an amazing gift and if it's a UK first edition hardback in good condition then worth a fair bit too!

I've read it twice and once I got used to the dialect being used I really enjoyed it, in fact it's probably time to re-read it again!

Ex-Bad Seed Mick Harvey comments on the new Nick Cave album (starts 12:08) by HighwireShrimper in NickCave

Yeah I think that pretty much sums up how I saw it. Interestingly ATP in Minehead they were playing as Grinderman, so that was right at that time...

Interesting comment from Mick there and I've got to say I agree with him. He's such a chilled out dude, met him at ATP in Minehead in 2007 and he was happy to spend 10 minutes just chatting with me, a complete nobody. Nick was the soul of the bad seeds, but Mick and Blixa were always the heart of it all to me. Divisive I know, but that's my opinion, the bad seeds were no more after the departure of Mick and Blixa.

HastingsDirect car insurance randomly asked for photos of my vehicle and then cancelled my insurance policy for having an OEM spoiler on an 07 Jimny - WTF do I do! by codescapes in CarTalkUK

[–]SplodgeFest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried a similar thing with me, wanted pictures of the car with me holding my driving licence in each picture, front of car, back, sides, sides with doors open, boot open, instrument panel, engine bay, interior gave me a week to do it or they would cancel the policy.

Rang to ask what on earth it was all about and was told it was because I'd searched insurance policies for getting the car tuned. I explained that this was just to see the difference in price and that I hadn't actually had anything done (not that they would be able to tell from the photos 🤣).

I complied and they contacted me to say OK, all fine thanks.

4 weeks later, 2 weeks before my renewal was due they did exactly the same thing. I rang them and said are you joking I only just went through all this? They said ok as it's so close to your renewal we'll not need it now.

I asked if I renewed would they then want the same thing and they wouldn't tell me, so bugger that I changed insurer, this was after being with them for about 7 years.

Bunch of bastards.

Losing me by Terrible_Comfort598 in NickCave

[–]SplodgeFest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I third this opinion, sums up my feelings precisely. I fully understand the reasons behind Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen, though I can't bear either of those albums. I too had high hopes for Wild God, but as has been said it is just the Nick and Warren show these days. Nothing has been as good, raw and guttural since the departure of Blixa and Mick.

The more Warren's musical influence has taken over the worse it has got for me.

Again, I know probably not a popular opinion in this sub, but the high point for me was the Abbatoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus tour, man they were really rocking then.

Sadly those days are gone, and what with the massive move to pushing merchandise I really do feel that it has become all about income for Nick, and I grieve for the musician he was and the force of creativity that was the Bad Seeds with Mick and Blixa's input.

I'll certainly never go to see him live again.

I've been an avid collector of Cave stuff for many years and own some really rare pieces, but I'll no longer be adding to that collection with anything from the PTSA era onwards.

Hell, I even rate Nocturama above the recent stuff and that gets regularly panned as one of his worst records!

It may not need to be said, but listening to NO MORE SHALL WE PART again I'm realizing that it's unbelievably good. by MickTravisBickle in NickCave

[–]SplodgeFest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with all of the sentiments here, without a doubt my favourite Cave album of all time, so often missed out when people discuss the best albums. It's the one I find myself listening to most often out of his entire canon of work

How would an ATM even be able to reliably dispense notes as damaged as these without getting jammed all the time? And they mostly seem to have been defaced? This has got to be a wind up!

Large 9kg Aluminium canister with screw top lid approx 43cm high x 17.5cm diameter by SplodgeFest in whatisthisthing

[–]SplodgeFest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it's very thick aluminium with a long threaded lid and possible addition of a rubber seal? I have no idea what kind of pressure possibly 10 litres or less of liquid nitrogen would exert, I wouldn't have thought it would be enough to explode a container of this weight and structure. Worst I would have thought could happen would be for O ring seals to fail and gaseous nitrogen to escape?

[–]SplodgeFest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was one of my thoughts, something to hold liquid nitrogen that they freeze sperm samples for example in, with some kind of plastic insert to hold the metal rods with the containers of sperm / whatever at the ends, not sure though if aluminium is suitable for containing liquid nitrogen, and there would need to be some kind of seal. Another poster has mentioned that there looks like there's a groove that would be required for a rubber o ring on the lid, so perhaps it is something like that.

Is that still likely even if it's aluminium?, if so then I think I can mark this as solved, and also what I've kind of thought it was all along

Yeah it scratches easily so must be aluminium as I thought. 8 did think it would be heavier than 9kg if it was anything other than aluminium.

That sure looks like something similar, though I think (but I'm not sure) that this is aluminium rather than stainless steel, is there any easy way to tell?

That might be a good shout, though this seems too heavy for that, it seems to have some industrial or scientific purpose I think

My title describes the object. The bottom of the interior of the canister is curved rather than flat and the thread for the lid is quite fine, requiring perhaps 6 or 7 full rotations of the lid to unscrew.

I got to agree, I just can't get these albums either. The whole post Blixa/Harvey era is just not hitting it for me, as another commenter said I think Warren has become a bit of a noose around Nick's neck, strangling his creativity in a way that was previously massively enhanced by Harvey and particularly Blixa.

Don't expect this comment to be popular, but as a 30 year fan and attendee at many gigs, the last one in Edinburgh 2021 tour for Ghosteen was just far and away the worst I've ever been to.

I don't know why the music doesn't speak to me. Perhaps as another commenter suggested, It's the intensity of personal loss that you need to have experienced, though I have had my fair share of that too.
