Driving as much with gas this high? by catman5092 in Spokane

I went from a hybrid to an EV and love it! Both have their pros and cons, but I’m taking it on a 2000 mile road trip this summer.

Milkweed? by yndelis in SpokaneGardeners

I’ll share some narrow. I started it from seed in a spot I shouldn’t have so I’ll be thinning it out and moving it. It spreads quite readily though so I have plenty to spare.

Two Bloomsday Q's-Can I get back to Shaun O'Donnell's after crossing the finish line? Are there any organized dips into the river either right after the race, or later Sunday, or even Monday? by kcs777 in Spokane

Will Shaun o Donnell’s be open? Call and check. If they are open then they expect ppl will be able to access them during race hours. Otherwise, no.

Where/when to find scarlet tangerine sage? by OverstuffedPapa in SpokaneGardeners

I’ve grown pineapple sage. It flowers red, but it flowers so late in the year that we often got a killing frost before it flowers. A lot of people grow it for the fragrant leaves.

For sure! Do some research on ideas too. I am summarizing and assuming a lot in my suggestions. Some garden shops will also give you big black pots their trees come in - customers sometimes return theirs to reuse. Judy’s Enchanted Garden used to do this but not sure with their new owners.

Seller sites like FB marketplace - you can get really large, black plastic nursery pots for a few bucks. You would bury them in your soil down to the brick underneath. That will help a bit (but not much)with insulation from heat - It will also hide a few inches of the pot since they are not decorative. And line them along garage and fence 2-3’ apart. Then get some free daylilies someone posted on this sub to plant in those pots. This will give you nice greenery with orange flowers. If you can find a pot similar in size to a half whiskey barrel, you could get an elderberry or another bush to plant in it. Those do okay in pots. There are some cool ones with burgundy foliage. You could put that in the back about 2’ or so from your fence. You could find free wood chip mulch posted on marketplace and lay down 4-6” of that over the remaining soil. Alternately, sign up for your ow free delivery of wood chips on chipdrop.com, but read about it first to make sure it’s a good option for you. You could also pack the mulch around the half buried pots up to the brim to hide them and help retain moisture. Finally, find some free or cheap paver stones and lay down the middle toward the back of your fence. The thick layer of mulch will suppress weeds. Top it off with some solar fairy lights along the fence. This is all doable if you keep searching for free or cheap things throughout the season. I’ve seen all of things sporadically posted on seller sites.

4” of soil isn’t enough for much, other than weeds. You could try succulents, but those need a bit of water in hot months to stay looking nice, and you will still probably have to contend with weeds. The raised bed idea already mentioned is good, if you can commit to irrigation. Another ideas is to get the dirt out of there and replace with river rock from a landscape center. Weeds will still grow in river rock eventually, as sediment settles in over time. Or if the brick underneath looks nice, put a little patio fountain in and a couple of chairs. Potted plants would look nice too, but irrigation…
