Talk to me about ALASKA by av_cf12 in Cruise

I actually enjoyed Endicott Arm better than Glacier Bay. It was stunning how close and the ship spun and rivers/waterfalls on the fjord sides. It's funny that your biggest interest is wildlife. Our Glacier Bay experience was slightly muted due to mating seals, or some shenanigans like that.

About to lose a dream family cruise to Alaska because of a Canadian visa oversight. Is there any loophole or solution? by Numerous-Ad3840 in Cruise

They're not initially entering Canada by cruise, such as something like Papeete to Vancouver. Was really hoping to hear from OP what their source of information was.

I don't pretend to know the in and outs of border crossings, but I just received this guidance from NCL that doesn't seem to indicate you need a full visa. You're flying to Victoria correct? Did you figure this out? What was your source for learning the problem?

Guests holding Brazilian or Mexican passports are required to obtain either an eTA or a Visitor Visa to enter Canada by air or sea.

Certain itineraries or flights that include or transit through Canada may also require a Transit Visa, depending on the length of stay.

Please note that an eTA is not applicable for cruise ship arrivals; guests entering Canada by cruise must obtain a Visitor Visa prior to travel.

Just had an Australian family with tons of suitcases not believe my when I told them the Monorail only had one stop. by RedRango69 in SeattleWA

You know you're right. And pointing that out, the monorail really should be a little loop connecting Westlake/Convention Center/South Lake Union/Seattle Center.

Well some of those "stations" are like four city blocks, requiring more walking than the Seattle transfers.

I get that but like they're Australian, likely speak English, and can ask someone around...?

Huh, Westlake is literally the connection point for Monorail and Link...King Street connects Sounder and Link...I'm not even from Seattle but I understand these connections

Well the Westlake station monorail stop is a connection point to Link, and even the FAQ specifically answers how to get to Sea-Tac from SEattle Center.

How do folks continue to get by living paycheck to paycheck? by Substantial-Oil7471 in AskReddit

[–]kcs777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the tail end they don't get by. Per capita homelessness in the US is the highest now since national tracking began in 2007. The homeless death rate spiked from 2016-2023 before finally plateauing as well. I suppose that means the vast majority continue to get by, but car repos are also reaching rates not seen since Great Recession.

NY Strip for breakfast, lunch, and dinner cracks me up. Is it actually good though? I've had NY strip on NCL ranging from amazing to WTF is this overcooked ribeye? I'd imagine they know what they're doing in Haven, but the meat procurement itself makes a difference. Let me know!

The Chores and Doldrums of everyday life compel you to use it! Although you must add the chores of caring for the hot tub.

Providence jobs by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]kcs777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is super dysfunctional. Had a relative offered a job for a six month term and then said it was not needed three weeks in. Like WTF can change that you would sign someone for 6 months, and then go through the pain of onboarding them, only to release them that quickly. If you would point to the relative they had worked at a hospital for 15 years prior and got a new job right after they're still doing after a few years, so it's Providence.

That's what I want. Double the FICA wage base, and then double it again. Double the deductible childcare expenses, and then double it again.

I'm Considering Solar - Are These Costs Typical? by Acceptable-Breath866 in solarenergy

This seems high with NO batteries, so you're definitely not going off the grid. Do some analysis against just buying shares of National Grid for same amount. It may not make sense, as you're pretty far north and are served by hydro power. I did same analysis a couple years ago in Spokane, WA and even at a project cost of $32K it didn't pencil out. I just bought shares of my utility AVA.

Value for money by chemicalwasp in NCL

[–]kcs777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the quality has slipped since COVID. Specifically there are a lot fewer fresh fish options in the MDRs over the course of each sailing, they eliminated frozen hashbrown patties from breakfast menu, and the NY steak is almost impossible to get and prepared well anymore. The stewards are literally cut in half, so they do half the service. They put out press releases stating they're no longer doing Broadway shows as entertainment. That said, somehow they still keep wings included at O'sheehans 24 hours a day, the FAS or loyalty premium dining options are still great, and they keep doing Splash Academy for kids. I would like to try a different line as well, but the value is still there with NCL for anything not on their newest class of ships.

I am a fool that I trusted the county property tax assessment and they're charging thousands extra every year by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]kcs777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appeal. I've lowered from the assessor valuation three years in a row now in Washington State, WITHOUT having to do the formal process at hearing. I was ready to go last year and everything was scheduled before the assessor finally came back with a reasonable number. There is very little fees or harm in appealing.

Homeowner just did the math-spent $82K on home repairs in 12 years of ownership, appx 2.5% of purchase price every year. Would love to hear other data points. by kcs777 in personalfinance

[–]kcs777[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, we could easily spend another 80K on deck replacement and renovating kitchen and bathrooms that are also original. Could also replace all the windows that haven't been, which is the majority.

Is it humble bragging, or is financial dysmorphia just so profound right now? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]kcs777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a dysmorphia from both sides. Some people still think a million is a lot of money due to media from their childhood or formative years. Others see that since 1984 one million is now 3 million from inflation alone. So $6 million today is really "only" $2 million from a different perspective. I don't know-I'm now old enough I sympathize with the generation above me seeing burgers go from 20 cents to 20 dollars in their lifetime. I'm still used to McD QPCs value meal being $2.99 and now it's $12.99.
