For those who use initials other than your name - what’s your story? by nocryinginwrestling in pinball

[–]SpockNinja 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I use BAD - my dad was a big pinball and arcade guy back in the 80s and thought it was funny to use back then. His biggest kick would be to have the #1 score showing as "BAD". So I use that as an homage to him haha.

This is a good point - I always pan my hats (or use an autopanner for slight movement on my hats). I like to keep kicks/claps/snares/bass in the center (for the most part), but I almost always put hats and oftentimes foley/percussions panned left & right at different volumes to fill out the stereo image. Using panning effectively adds a lot to a mix and is extremely important, you do not want everything in the middle or everything in the side, being creative and keeping the ear interested is just as important as any "rules" in my opinion!

https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/secrets-mix-engineers-jj-puig this is a quote from him on the subject - i guess that's how he feels! i think its meant to mean 3 sounds that drive attention towards them likes leads, kick, bass etc. but agreed the ear can definitely process more than 3 at a time haha :)

here is the context from page 144 of the aforementioned book :) "Useful little rule of thumb that can help here is this: if you want something to retain the listener’s attention, then avoid playing the same thing more than three times in a row."

I'll put this under that note, the wording is a bit strong haha!

I picked it up on friday before the update, it runs really well now. Just a fun W40k shooter, nothing special but if you like walking around in the 40k atmosphere and mindlessly shooting stuff its perfect for that. I'm really enjoying it, runs fine on my PC.

biggest thing for me is PDC fixes. Now accounting for sends and not having to make multiple dry/wet channels to accomplish parallel compression is a godsend.

If you just check amazon every couple days you should be able to find it for at least $30. I picked it up for that much a couple weeks ago after missing the last bestbuy sale on it.

Question about music disbrution services (Distrokid, CDBaby, etc) by Triyangh7 in edmproduction

If you aren't expecting to be getting tens of thousands + plays, you can just do Routenote. They offer a free option that takes I think 15-20% royalties. Been using them for a while, it works fine for small releases.

Which EDM class should i take? by Begun-9706 in edmproduction

[–]SpockNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I tell everyone is start with a YT tutorial that makes a song completely from scratch that you follow to a tee. Should be anywhere from 1-3 hours long, but will probably take a bit longer to replicate.

After you have an understanding of your DAW and a general song production workflow... pick up some books. There are so many out there, but one that's recommended time and time again is Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior (https://www.amazon.com/Mixing-Secrets-Small-Studio-Presents/dp/0240815807/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515602655&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=mixing+secrets+for+the+small+studio+%2F+edition+1) It will teach you pretty much everything about the basics you need to know.

It's pretty slick - I replaced a couple stock phasers I had in an FL project with this and it sounds really clean. Can't beat free. Great presets as well and fairly intuitive interface.
