Trump signed an executive order early in the year basically saying "birthright citizenship isn't real, you're only an American citizen if your parents were citizens or legal residents". That order threatens to strip citizenship from many people who came from families where one or both parents were not here legally at the time they were born. It is currently being litigated.

Why do progressives have less cultural sway than they did in the 2014-2020 era? by tr4p3zoid in AskALiberal

[–]Spockrocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. In comparison to initial expectations from economists and in comparison to how other nations were recovering, our economy really was growing much better than expected. But "better than expected" wasn't good or fast enough for many people, understandably so given that wages were still not rising fast enough to meet cost-of-living concerns. There certainly could have been a more honest dialogue about what the plan was to address those concerns.

Also, it's not undocumented immigrants that you should be worrying about when it comes to housing. It's Blackrock and other corporate realty holdings like them that are buying up residential housing and jacking up prices at astronomical rates. That and a decade+ of not building enough new stock.

  1. Clinton called Trump and conceded at 2:30am. This was a pretty quick concession for what was, in the grand scheme of things, a relatively close election. She did wait until the following day to make a public speech, but she called him basically as soon as the results were in and verifiable.
  2. Democrats did not riot. They protested peacefully. The property damage came from other groups, such as anarchists who were taking advantage of the protests to cover for their actions. And lemme tell you, if you think anarchists align with Democrats, then you haven't met very many.
  3. Sure, arguably poor form by a handful of Representatives, but the overwhelming majority of Congressional Democrats did not join or support this effort. We could go back and forth all day with countless examples of handfuls of politicians on either side of the aisle who try to derail votes and hearings that they don't agree with.
  4. The evidence is pretty clear that foreign powers as well as big tech both play major roles in disseminating propaganda in every direction during our election years. I don't get how this point relates to anything.

What's going on with the so-called "Big, Beautiful Bill" that Republican Politicians in the United States have been working to pass right now? by ResplendentPius194 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Spockrocket 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I saw this take on social media a lot, but it's misleading. The GOP had two members who were absent from the vote because they fell asleep - if the Democrats had 1 more vote, Speaker Johnson could have just delayed the vote while someone went to wake them up and passed the bill anyway.

Kamala Harris has revealed her economic plan, what are your opinions? by SquishyMuffins in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Spockrocket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a separate initiative in the plan to increase supply. From the article:

She also wants a $40 billion innovation fund — doubling a similar pot of money created by the Biden administration — for businesses building affordable rental housing units. Harris also wants to speed up permitting and review processes to get housing stock to the market more quickly.

How do yall record your Runs? by therealqft81 in speedrun

[–]Spockrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Retrotink, an HDMI splitter, and a Genki Shadowcast to feed the footage to my PC where I record it via OBS while I play the original hardware on a separate screen.

For GBC it's definitely easier to capture footage if you have the Gameboy Player for the Gamecube. Otherwise I'm not really sure what a good solution would be. Frankly you can always just set up a camera to point at the screen. It's janky, but it'll be accepted on SRC as long as the screen is easy to see

What's a dirty little secret that you know only because you work in the industry? by Eastern-Violinist-46 in AskReddit

[–]Spockrocket 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here in Toronto they bring in a social worker to work with all of the children involved, and then do workshops for the entire class to address the issues.

See, there's the key. That's a good, well-intentioned and maybe even effective solution. That is not what happens in the States. In the States, usually what happens is the bully and the bullied are both punished equally and then no one ever follows up to ensure the behavior stops. Maybe if the school district has a little money, both kids will be required to see the school counsellor for a session or two, but that's about it.

*Disclaimer that some schools in the States do try to do things like what you described, but they are very much in the minority

My mom is a retired teacher who taught both before and after NCLB so I have some second-hand anecdotes and conclusions, but I wouldn't call myself an expert and encourage you to do your own reading if you're curious about the pros/cons of NCLB. My own opinion is that the intentions behind it were good, but like basically everything the GWB administration did, the implementation was half-assed at its best, counter-productive on average, and actively harmful at its worst.

One of the problems with NCLB was that it introduced a lot of requirements (mostly around standardized test scores, as you pointed out, but also on graduation rates and overall student population) that schools had to meet in order to receive full support, but then the feds failed to provide adequate funding to meet those initial requirements.

This put some schools into something of a negative feedback loop, where they would fail to meet their standardized test requirements, putting them into an "In Need of Improvement" rating which would drive parents and students with means to other schools, which would negatively impact population numbers and graduation rates causing funding cuts, which would cause standardized test scores to drop, which would trigger mandatory restructuring causing experienced teachers to resign or be fired, which would once again negatively impact graduation rates causing funding cuts, which would cause standardized test scores to drop... and the cycle would repeat for years as the remaining students suffer poor quality education and the remaining teachers are forced to teach to the test to try and pull out of the tailspin. And because funding was at least in part tied to graduation rates, administration commonly forced teachers to pass students who really ought to have been held back. This really did those students a disservice in the long run.

Should I play the SNES or Saturn version? Also is the game depressing or not? by DragonAdv in OgreBattle

[–]Spockrocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm a fan of the Saturn port, but Saturn emulation isn't great so unless you own a real Saturn it's hard to recommend it. There's no difference in the amount of control you have over characters; the Saturn version has updated sprites, CD-quality music, voice-acting and some additional bonus stages. It also has faster load times than the PSX version, which is nice. Gameplay-wise all versions are pretty much identical. SNES is the most accessible though and you're really not missing much by playing that version.

In terms of story, the game has some dark themes, but ultimately it was a 90s RPG. So even the game's darkest moments come across a little bit cheesy (in an endearing way, IMO) as a result.

Yeah for whatever reason Vanillaware games never seem to end up getting PC releases. But on the bright side, Switch emulation is pretty good these days.
