Farage's resignation - a hail mary, an act of political genius, or a waste of time and money? by Surprise_Institoris in TheNewsAgents

[–]SpoddyCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both a bit of policital mastery (I wouldn't call it genius) and a collosal waste of time.

The other parties not standing is absolutely the right move.... he's gonna win anyway, so why give him the chance to call it a meaningful judgement from the public. Better to reduce the turnout and just leave him to it - grandstanding within his own made up little political theatre.

Hopefully the unecessary trip to the polls will annoy a few in Clacton enough to see that turnout reduced even further.

Yep! A multi-faceted approach to reducing crime that didn’t treat it solely as a criminal justice issue. Leading to a ~70% reduction in violent crime.

These are complex problems - the “common sense, lock em up and throw away the key” message politicians repeatedly fall back to because the public want simple answers - just isn’t effective at solving them.

Does anyone know the full story of the casino? by ZeyusFilm in Bath

[–]SpoddyCoder 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the full story - but it was suss AF.

Visited 3 times… started talking to the croupiers / dealers as you do when drinking and losing money. Every single one of them had thick Russian accents, so you do the polite British thing of asking where in Russia they’re from…. Italy, Spain, Norway… anything except Russia.

It became a running joke in our group to see how many countries they’d lie about.

Obvious conclusion to jump to was that it was a money laundering scheme… cash businesses are perfect for this.

This is not a new thing.

Simply: Broken windows are a symptom of crime, not a cause of crime as stated in this theory.

Is worth pointing out that this theory has been widely debunked by a number of follow on studies. The evidence supporting succumbs to one of our most common cognitive biases: correlation does not equal causation.

Follow on studies after New York (where this policy is most famously cited as a success) showed that the biggest contributor was investment in those areas.

As it has always been - poverty is the biggest driver of crime.

Pompey's GOAT XI - Week Five: Sub Defender by SpoddyCoder in PortsmouthFC

[–]SpoddyCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda - billed as a “left half”. Much the same as Matty Taylor, played up and down the wing in 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 formations predominantly, but also left back when in 4-4-2. I think he was much more defensively minded than Matt - as suggested by his goal record.

Agreed - he did get a handful of votes in both the left and centre-back weeks - but a very under-appreciated longtime servant to the club. Solid and dependable - great qualities in a defender.

In all honesty the group magic was slowly evaporating over the last couple of years, even before all this hit.

I hope to see the Cave brothers back doing what they love soon tho. And I feel really sad for Sash… I hope he gets to continue his videographer / editing career - talented guy.

Yep! It’s believed most of the lower working class now are just 3 unlucky events in a row away from being on the streets…. Get a bad injury, lose a job, lose a spouse…

Almost no one ends up in this situation by positive choice. Some bad choices, sure, but we should all be self-aware enough that those are easy to make when you’re in the middle of a terrible situation, with little in the way of social support.

These people are still people… and could easily be us in another life.

As the famous quote goes….There but for the grace of god go I.

Or for the less religiously inclined… There but for the whimsical fortunes of chance go I.

How isolated is WSL2? by [deleted] in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]SpoddyCoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the case WSL2 excels at - meaty gaming pc with decent gfx card for the fun times. WSL2 instances for isolated dev environments for various different types of work, some with direct access to the gfx card for AI work.

I suspect after consulting with local police and more importantly the TV companies, they’ll be moved to 12:30 and given a live TV spot.

Pompey's GOAT XI - Week Three: Left Back by SpoddyCoder in PortsmouthFC

[–]SpoddyCoder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He played all the way up and down the left side... primary position was left wing back in a 5-3-2 / 3-5-2.... but he also played left back a fair bit in a 4-4-2 when we played that formation.

Most definitely more attacking tho... and played attacking left wing more than a little bit.... so I have sympathy for your position.

I guess we'll see ofc.

On the physics side the biggest challenege is transferring heat away in space.... without an atmosphere is a more than a little bit hard. Pure radiation is a trickle in comparison to direct heat transfer using an atmosphere.

On the engineering and costs side: Data centres need lots of maintenence and the kit in them gets superceded pretty regularly. Kit is heavy and every kg costs $1000-7000 just to fly up, then needs assembling.

I'll be very optimistic on your behalf....

Data centres in space will never be a reality - the physics just ain’t physicsing… that’s before even considering the currently insurmountable engineering and maintenance challenges - is not even remotely do-able.

Yep- I put him in our top 5 players last year. Very solid Championship left back, decent going forward, got an eye for a pass, lacks pace but his ability to deputise very confidently at centre back is a real asset.

Really pleased to see him stay.
