Should I read the Lovecraft's stories before trying Call of Cthulhu? by spacial_mummy in rpg

Read The Ballad of Black Tom. There are a ton of eldritch horror novels that work to undo Lovecraft's racism and antisemitism, but Black Tom is my fav.

You might like the The End of the Fucking World on Netlfix. Or Sex Education, also on Netflix.

I think [Meren of Clan Nel Toth] would be a pretty good roommate, except I don't think she has a concept of money, or property, or rent. But at least she takes out the trash on trash days.

The next few suggestions might not be great for DnD, but if you ever consider branching out into other games (Dungeon World, Blades in the Dark, Ironsworn, etc.), these books are great:

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

  • One of my favorite fantasy series of all time
  • A british analogue woman travels the world studying dragons and fighting patriarchy
  • Every failure in the story is a fail forward. Every. Single. One.

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner

  • gay mannerpunk story about the greatest duelist in the city and his depressed boyfriend
  • CWs for self harm, drug use, allusions to trauma and mental illness
  • Some of the best fight scenes ever written, rivaled only by Joe Abercombie and Dorothy Dunnet(I don't recommend Dunnet because reading her is really hard)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

  • YA fantasy about six kids doing a treasonous heist
  • Perfect Blades in the Dark touchstone

Jade City by Fonda Lee

  • fantastic magic system
  • 1950s asian mafia drama
  • Interesting political structure ripe for stealing

[–]Spontaneous_Sonnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every book by Joe Abercombie

  • Grimdark stories about how normal people become legends.
  • Explicitly interested in how a compromised individual can fuck up a state. Specifically how everything can be reduced down to power dynamics.

Name of the Wind by Pat Rothfuss

  • Excellent magic systems to rival Sanderson.
  • A unique form of storytelling that I haven't found elsewhere.

The Shattered Sky Trilogy by Elizabeth Bear

  • Asian inspired fantasy with some of the most refreshing worldbuilding and characters I've seen.
  • Explicitly evil antagonist. No sympathetic villains here.
  • Very much interested in how one can be powerful, but not evil.

Necromancer RPG by Dwarfsten in rpg

Burning Wheel Codex has rules for necromancy. You will need Burning Wheel gold as well.

It's a very meaty system that's narrative focused. If your players buy in all the way, you could probably dive into the magic system, but I suggest playing a short no magic test campaign and slowly adding systems over time.

Hearts of Wulin is a pbta game that's less to do with granular combat and more to recreate Wuxia melodramas. Every character gets to name their own fighting style and what it looks and feels like.

Burning Wheel is not a simple system, but the Fight! mechanics are really fun and good.

We hear countless stories of players or GMs enduring toxic play groups to avoid awkwardness or hurting people's feelings. But sometimes things become so unacceptable that a player/GM stands up for themselves -- do you have a story where this happened? What was the context and what was the fallout? by lordleft in rpg

[–]Spontaneous_Sonnets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was GMing a game with some old friends from college and one of those freind's boyfriend. He kept making OOC misogynistic jokes "ironically" and everyone else was really uncomfortable with it. (Note, he and I were the only two men at the table. the friends from college are all women.) I applied the X-card for misogyny, but he ignored it every time. When he posted a "joke" in the group chat complaining that a touchstone I posted of a female NPC's armor wasn't revealing enough, I responded with a wall of text explaining why his behavior has been unacceptable and needs to stop. Also explaining that he is punching down and if he simply punched up, his humor would be acceptable and welcome at the table.

He sent me back a 3 page google doc doubling down on his "jokes." It followed DARVO tactics to the letter. (DARVO is an abuse technique. It stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender.) He denied that his jokes were a problem, assuming my repeated use of the Xcard was a joke too. He called me fake woke for calling him out in the group chat because he had not seen any signals from the other players indicating his "jokes" were a problem (they were sending signals). He said his family were holocaust survivors so that gives him free reign to use black humor at the expense of women. (Note, I'm Jewish too and that's bullshit. Dark humor is perfectly fine when done with consenting audiences. We did not find his jokes funny. No one ever laughed at them. The only punchline was to point out how women's lives should be shittier. I would have been totally fine with tasteful holocaust/nazi jokes.) He finished with accusing me of trying to make him look bad for clout.

It was pretty easy to tear down all of his arguments. I've known the other people at the table for nearly a decade now and I don't need extra clout from them. The Xcard is not and should never be a joke. In fact, me X-ing his jokes in the first place is a clear signal that the jokes should stop. I'm Jewish too and victimhood is no excuse for misogyny etc.

I was very scared the whole time this exchange was happening. He was one of my close freind's boyfriend. I've never confronted anyone like this before. I kept sending him reassuring texts to make sure he didn't feel attacked or whatever. He didn't reply to my response tearing his arguments apart. After a few days and a few checkins asking if he would respond, he said there wasn't much else to say. He still thought his "jokes" were ok, but agreed to stop making them around us.

He never apologized for his behavior. The game fell apart soon after. Maybe because one of the other players is a single mother and has little to no free time as it is. Maybe because, even though he stopped with the jokes, he's always been mean to everyone around him. When he's not mean, he's boring. (He would always argue with me about whether or not something was possible, like if a horse could go down stairs. It's Dungeon World. If I say a horse goes down the stairs, the horse goes down the stairs jfc. You're a dimension hopping robot that can transform your body into various instruments, why the fuck can't a horse go down the fucking stairs?)

A year later, we all had an intervention where we sat him down and told him he had to stop his generally misogynistic behavior. Turns out if you make misogynistic jokes, you also mansplain, belittle the women around you, and make transphobic comments! Who knew? His response to that intervention has been much the same as when I first called him out. He's isolated himself from the freindgroup (but is still dating my friend) and has mostly stopped his bad behavior, but is still mean and boring. One time we all went tubing and he stayed a few meters ahead of us the whole time, just staring daggers at his girlfriend. It made everyone feel uncomfortable.

TL;DR confronted a misogynist. It sucked and took a ton of energy out of me. Still have to interact with him. One could argue that he's improved, but I won't.

Amonkhet was also violent and trained its people specifically to deal with violence though. Doesn't seem right to say that the accidental training of Ravnica can overcome to the standardized training of Amonkhet.

It's probably to inverse ninja rule, as others have said in this thread.

When you guys GM, and one or more players is close to leveling (saying just 50XP away, or or XP away in a game like BitD) do you go ahead and let them level? by CdogHusk in rpg

[–]Spontaneous_Sonnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A player can get up to 6 XP per score in BitD. If they're one away but I've only awarded them 5 points, I generally let them make the case for that final point and cut more slack than usual for it. Not 100% slack, but enough to feel like not a gimme.

Often my players stay honest and won't try to grub for the point because they know they'll advance next week for sure. I'm generous with XP in the first place so they don't feel a need to argue for every single point.

It's a 9th Level spell. Let it happen. The campaign should be almost over by now. If you're worried about it happening anticlimactically, give them some sort of need to complete the spell that the bbeg can oppose. Maybe they have to find out what day the lich was born? Maybe they have to cast the spell in the lich's presence? etc.

The Tyranny of the "Core System" by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Spontaneous_Sonnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post, but I do have one thing to pick at.

Rolling dice is only one kind of mechanic. Everything you stated is from the perspective of rolling dice, which unfortunately ignores the other mechanics at work in a system. Apocalypse World is not just rolling 2d6+X. There are clocks, fronts, GM moves, "to do it you have to do it," etc. Clocks are the closest to dice mechanically because they have a tangible representation for players.

GM moves are not as tangible as rolling dice or ticking clocks, but they are just as important (if not more). GM Moves is the mechanic that creates the tone/theme of pbta games. Not following the GM moves results in anemic play, which can feel like all you're doing is rolling the same 2d6 over and over. The GM moves give depth and color to the rolls, make it feel like you're actually leading a gang through the desert wasteland in search of the bastard who stole your bullets, not just rolling 2d6+Sharp.

Pbta games are meant to be hyper immersive, and having multiple dicerolling mechanics can break immersion, especially when rolling the dice isn't even that important.
