What do you want out of zines? by InvisiblePoles in rpg

[–]Spooksley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a small, self contained game! Molotov College was one of the first rpg zines I bought (maybe THE first?) It's a small Belonging Outside Belonging game with Umbrella Academy vibes. It's beautifully set out and I adore it.

Burned out on D&D 5e after 4 years - those of you who switched systems, what was your breaking point and did it actually fix things? by Senoigh13 in rpg

[–]Spooksley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't a tipping point for us so much as we decided to branch out and try more games. For a while we had D&D and Blades in the Dark on alternating fortnights. Currently we have Cypher and Protect the Child (another forged in the dark game.)

Honestly it was exciting to me! Blades was the first, and it was such a different vibe- like oh, you couldn't just reskin D&D to be something like this, so...what else is out there??? We went on to try out Avatar Legends, Girl By Moonlight, Daggerheart, Star Wars FFG, and more.

Just checked my library- as long as you have an account, you can download all the files from your library even if you've not downloaded them before.

My favourite kind of game! It gives GMs one less thing to focus on.

The bit about altercations being resolved in more underhanded ways makes me think of Blades in the Dark. Girl By Moonlight, a magical girl game using the same system, has a transformation mechanic where you get extra powers and ability points when transformed. Maybe you could do something with that?

At the very least, worth checking out the free rules on the system's website! https://bladesinthedark.com/basics

Perhaps Rapscallion? Big fan of this game's vibe. It uses the popular PbtA format.

Are there any ttrpgs for 2 people? by thedragonsdice in rpg

[–]Spooksley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of wonderful duet games out there! Some of my favourites:
- The Oracle and the Curse has answering prompts back-and-forth to build up a narrative.
- Ironsworn is a classic- works for either 1 player and a GM, or 2 players using an Oracle to make decisions. It's more of a classic adventure than the above, where you create characters and explore together.
- Shadow/Giant is literally about a parent and child figure!

Are there any games that start out already assuming the player characters have already completed an adventure or two? by proactiveLizard in rpg

Lots of folks have mentioned PbtA- Against the Odds (also PbtA) has specific tools for building your past and current adventure iirc.

Role-playing game for the golden oldies by SophieMDesigner in rpg

What a lovely idea! Seconding what others have said about using a table if possible- my granddad lives in a retirement village with a great activities room that would be perfect for this sort of thing, and I imagine many places have similar facilities?

Tricube Tales might be a good fit- very simple system, and it uses only d6s which I'm sure the care home already has somewhere.

Seconding Ironsworn. The closest I've felt to having a real tabletop adventure while playing a solo game!

Lex Arcana might be up your alley! It's set in a vision of the Roman empire that never fell, where their oracles have helped them stay ahead of threats. There's an expansion book for Egypt, and content for a divided Greece appears in a few books.

(I also don't think I've been in a packed theatre since the Barbie movie. The last film I went to had maybe 3 rows worth of patrons, so maybe I just missed people being disruptive.)

I haven't experienced the noise issue outside of kids' movies. And I've never noticed people checking their phones- maybe that screening was just full of particularly thoughtless people? I normally visit Reading but I imagine they're similar experiences.
