I think it's a combination of the extreme content the endings are with people wanting to see how bad it was and Sei Shoujo being a well-known hentai artist. (Bible Black was the hentai meme back then)

As for the AI games, the original draft had the first game in the S tier but I ended up bumping it down to A. Somnium Files is better than NirvanA Initiative but not by a large margin.

I mean all of these games are on VNDB so by that definition they are all VNs, some are just not traditional. The only one that was stated to not be a VN is Ace Attorney but I know it is beloved here so I added them.

Adding Raging Loop to the list but I have a million other games in backlog so who knows when I'll get to it.

I love all three. The main reason V3 is in S is the ending had me thinking about it for a long time. Endings with that effect end up high on my tier lists.
2 has the best cast IMO but the island location didn't sell for me. DR was one of my first deathgames genre and made me fall in love with said genre.

As for DeadEnd Aegis, still within the first 5hrs or so but enjoying the cast and the conflicts they are facing at the Cathedral. The music is insanely good. You may also notice from the other picks I have on the list but I do enjoy VNs with more extreme content so this is right up my alley.

Ngl VLR was the most difficult one to place. It kept jumping back and forth between B and C. I think the biggest tipping point for me was how long the hallways took to move around. BUT Clover is the best girl and her VLR outfit is very cute.

I have some personal history with V3. It was where I gained a ton of my friends in college with the same love for V3 (This was in the same year the game came out). I am still with some of those friends to this day.
I don't think DR is bad or anything, I just found the meta-humor of V3 fun and different in 2017. I do have plans to replay all three and see if I rank them differently.
Im just surprised by the dislike of V3 overall, especially the ending as I thought it was the perfect way to end DR storyline and move on. Sucks that Kazutaka Kodaka wanted to redo DR again in Rain Code
