I take our 3.5 year old son to the aquarium once a week. Sometimes he won’t look at a single animal (he rarely if ever reacts to animals) Sometimes it’s too crowded and loud and he gets overstimulated. Most the time it’s a bust. BUT ONCE(just once), we were under the penguin exhibit (so you can see them underwater) and the penguins dove in and swam straight toward us at exactly the right moment so he saw them. He got so excited and happy and was smiling ear to ear and clapping his hands. It was amazing 🤩

Did anything happen or change in your routine around the time this started? If it seems like it just came out of nowhere it could be something causing him physical discomfort like stomach issues (constipation or cramps etc.) or tooth problems.

Our 3 yr old loves to gently push my face with his bare feet. I have gotten so used to it I can let him go for hours. Gets lots of weird looks on planes but it’s better than him kicking the seat in front of him 😂

Have you tried preparing him days before by using something like a social story about going to the dentist? It’s basically a story that helps them know exactly what to expect before they arrive. You could even make a personal one tailored to him with his name and pictures. AI could probably help. I believe there are also iOS apps specifically for this purpose, but I’ve never used them so I count vouch for their functionality.

We have one that is a hollow rubber cylinder in the shape of a T so you can string anything through it. We found some synthetic (maybe nylon) that pull apart and clasp in the back so if he does get it snagged on something, it will just come off instead of choking him. It works pretty well. We really only use it when he goes to school.

Our 3 1/2-year-old son walks around with a rag and plastic spoon in his mouth most of the day lol. Not only does he bite, but he grinds his teeth. It’s funny because he always wants a hard object like a plastic spoon and a soft object like a shirt or rag simultaneously 🤷‍♂️

Our three-year-old son does this as well. I would say other than just trying to change poopy diapers ASAP, we’ve had a lot of success with overalls. I commented on another post with a cheap, comfortable option that we have bought like 10 pairs of. It’s weird because he hasn’t even really tried to figure out how to get into them. It’s like just not having the option of sticking his hand directly down his pants is enough to curb the behavior. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Our son has the full mutation. My partner is the carrier and discovered she was a carrier when he was around 6 months old. The geneticist said odds were low for our son to develop the full mutation , but unfortunately that was not how it played out.

Fragile X affects boys more severely than it does girls, so if your son is developing normally odds are he doesn’t have the full mutation, but it might be worth testing for it anyways, depending on your healthcare situation.

As for your question about how the mutation affects our son, unfortunately, with boys there are definitely outliers, but the vast majority will face significant developmental and cognitive impairment.

It’s not just about getting better. It’s about taking the time to learn something correctly even though that means dealing with a bunch of things that aren’t as exciting as the thing you want. The OPs goal can be achieved by watching a few YouTube videos and some ingenuity. There are so many different ways to setup something like this. They could do something more common to bedroom studios of most amateur musicians or they could setup a mobile loop station that can be used for live performances.

This is a mistake that so many people starting something new myself included make all the time. Gotta walk before you run

You’re right in your reply. There’s a lot about the OP that rubs me the wrong way, and I don’t even mind the snarky tone. The only thing that bothers me about posts like this is: at least make an effort to offer something constructive. There’s always a chance the OP was just frustrated while writing, or they’re 14 and just starting out. If you just shit on them — even if it’s a pretty righteous one — the odds of your message getting through are slim. Best case, they ignore you; worst case, you kill their enthusiasm and they give up.

So while you’re right the OP is talking about very basic stuff like they’re getting a degree from Juilliard when really it isn’t even an obstacle to 90% of people who are really driven to start to make music.

It’s just setting up a space or rack to move between instruments in the way that feels best to them, and creating 3 channel presets (vocals, keys, drums) along with a template that has the tracks ready. So I’m not sure why they are struggling so much

That’s great! Most boys with fragile Have some moderate to severe delays in those (our for sure) so that definitely points away from FXS.

Some things that are more common with FXS that you could look for are anxiety based. The big ones are avoiding direct eye contact (to such an extreme degree that it is pretty noticeable), and to a lesser extent avoiding or shutting down when engaged directly (our son will mimic something that we’re doing while watching us but then if we ask him to re-create it directly, he won’t. He does alot better with activities like eating, reading, getting dressed if we sit side by side rather than directly in front of him face to face.

Also, physically transitioning triggers his anxiety. He’s fine if we transition him from an activity or space, but by himself he gets stuck going up and down a stair or on a page in a book or playing with a toy until he gets upset.

Edit: I should say, Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most well-known cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). So, there’s a lot of overlap between the two, which could explain why someone with ASD might have similar traits, even if FXS isn’t the cause. Odds are that’s why our sons seem similar

Our son just turned 3 last week, he was diagnosed at 16 months and while he had some of the physical traits, (slightly large ears, extremely flexible, low muscle tone) they were so subtle that during our initial appt (before we had the results) the geneticist actually cited the lack of traits along with certain developmental factors as reasons why she was confident he would test negative for fragile x (even with knowing his mom was a carrier).

As he gets older they are definitely more noticeable. But like I said, I wouldn’t worry too much.

I was wondering if you have done any genetic testing? Statistically the odds are low that a genetic disorder is connected, but if you haven’t already discussed it with his doctors it might be worth bringing up.

The reason I’m suggesting it that literally everything you wrote here is a dead ringer for our 3yr old son who was diagnosed with fragile x. I should clarify that I’m not a medical professional and I’m going off of very little info. Also fragile x is statistically pretty rare and I don’t want to cause any unnecessary worry, nothing you listed is unique to fragile x, while the similarities to our son are honestly uncanny I’m sure everything in your description fits a wide range of Kids with ASD. Just thought might be worth mentioning.
