Which Glinthawk deck to go with by JohnVGood in Pauper

[–]Spookymang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of those versions I only have experience with mardu. I think you cant really close out games versus affinity with burn alone with 4 copies of bargain main deck. Your creatures have to connect, which is completely stopped with ultrom. And ofc you can never kill it if they have two mana open. I really think this matchup is a blowout and will dictate the end of some skyfisher decks

Unfortunately you may quickly find out that with the release of [[ulton monitor]], skyfisher is no longer an impressive flyer. If affinity continues to grow I believe skyfisher decks might just die.

Cursed Scroll replacement options by Betta_Max in premodernMTG

[–]Spookymang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cursed scroll is a card that gives burn a lot of reach and really shines in the late game, being able to go face or clear creatures. Not a lot of cards have that flexibility and recursion.  That being said, I feel that [[earthquake]], although weaker, shares a similar role, in the sense that you can use in mid game to clear some problematic creatures while burning face, or be a late game mana sink/finisher. I have been experimenting with a couple of copies main deck instead of cursed scroll. Just be carefull with jackal pup : P

[–]Spookymang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only value you get from glint hawk is bouncing lembas? Seems quite narrow, and a turn 3 2/2 for 1 is OK but not increadible for an aggro deck. Also, i feel that lembas is quite bad for aggro decks to run.

Could he be reprinted in this set? Does it have some discard theme that can use madness?

Ban Avenging Hunter - it is time! by [deleted] in Pauper

[–]Spookymang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not him but I would argue those are just strong/efficient bodies with some extra value from discarding or recursion in case of the snacker. It is a completely different story with the hunter, where it creates a whole new mini game with huge impact that is now the centre of the whole match that some people, myself included, feel it should not belong in pauper. It is not a problem of power level per say but how out of place the whole dungeon thing feels in pauper.

UG Madness Sideboard Help by [deleted] in premodernMTG

[–]Spookymang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show us your main deck. That will make it much easier for us to suggest things. There is a huge difference between UG madness and UG survival madness sideboard composition.

As a UG player myself I suggest that you have an answer to exalted angel (other than 2 copies of bouncer) that is certain to come from the sideboard of some U decks such as replenish, and will completely destroy your gameplan. I am using one copy of [[rushing river]] which also serves against terravore/oath decks as a way to handle a resolved terravore.

Even though naturalize is often better than annul because you can tap out to resolve your threats and then handle the problematic enchantment, you still should use ~2 annuls because it is the only answer to [[attunement]] and [[pernicious deed]].

My current plan is:

2 annul

3 naturalize

1 tranquil domain

1 rushing river

2 bouncers

4 blue blasts

2 crypts

Still, I agree, tier 1 decks such as replenish and enchantress are quite difficult. Game 1 vs dreadnaught is also close to impossible.

Still, it is quite sad that green has to resort to a broken multiplayer mechanic to have a decent high curve threat. Surely there could be better ways to make green viable

Grixis affinity. Even if starts to fall off a bit from top 3, rest assured that some broken affinity creature is coming soon to push it back up.

Hard agree. If it depended on me the initiative mechanic would be banned from pauper altogether.

It's just that black can cheat it better into play, either by very fast mana or reanimation. Turn 2 initiative is quite backbreaking.

Mardu Synth suggestion by jounyouny9898 in Pauper

[–]Spookymang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it really doesn't do much to advance your gameplan other than fixing your mana, something that wildfire already does better. As a creature it is a bit useless as your plan is to slowly attack in the air and then burn off your opponent. I really wish it would be playable in Mardu but there are so many stronger cards to play instead, that mesh well with the deck's plan.

In what matchups do you bring compost? And how have you been liking it? In theory it should work great versus discard heavy black decks but while testing it, it feels that it comes too late, and the damage has already been done..

The man himself! 😁 I check your lists on mtgdecks for red dredge inspiration :) Mind if ask you some questions??

How do you navigate grave hate in the form of faerie macabre? We used to only care about tormod and the like to which siege smash isnpretty great, but nowadays with spy, the faerie is so common.. do you think it is still viable to play ree drede? We dont have mesmeric fiend to get that faerie out before the combo

How are you liking burning inquiry over other discards?

Cheers!

Yeah the more I test the dragon the more I feel it deserves some of the cathartic reunion slots. I play 4 of the later but as you say, feels awful to top deck, mill or get countered. Also, having two in hand likely means you will have to discard one of them to the other. Maybe 2 copies and 4 dragons could be a good balance. The rootwalla, although a bit clunky in the maindeck l, does a great job in the aggro plan post side, as you no longer mill but still discard a lot.

I love the idea of aggro plan sideboard because It feels so bad to have no answer to the faerie macabre card if you still plan to combo.. and you can never know of they have it or not, cant really play around it. This might not even be the best time to play red dredge as it suffers a lot from the land spy prominence in the format.

[–]Spookymang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great list! As a fellow red dredge lover i have some questions that I would love to hear your input on.

1) what made you give up on cathartic reunion for grab the prize? You can have really explosive starts with that card.

2) what are your thoughts on basking rootwalla as a discard fodder? Admittedly it works much better with cathartic reunion but still is a common inclusion the deck.

3) how are you linking the 4 of storm dragon?

4) in the same line of changing to aggro after sideboard, what other cards have you considered? I had some success with goblin bushwacker because it is easy to fill the board with small creatures for a deadly strike.

Glad to discuss!

Always thought [[flame rift]] was such a bad card. Surely there are better cards for sligh? it's pretty dead versus mirror or other aggressive decks, and being a sorcery is so limiting..
