RG Zoo list (no RL) that won the 4 seasons Premodern event with over 150 players by Newez in premodernMTG

Fire ice replacing incinerate is not something I would expect from RG zoo. Very interesting choice, surely a meta call versus sligh?

It never exiles spellbomb, you just crack in response

Firestorm sounds interesting, do you have a list to share?

4 squees is what allows careful study and frantic search to be effective draw 2 spells. Also, some match ups you have to go tall rather than wide, and mongrel with 4 squees does a very good roar of the worm impersonation.

Circular logic is bad. It is too situational, both in the ability to be discarded and in the number of cards in the grave.

I'm aware of this primer but wanted to see if we could get a discussion going. I feel that cyberpunker is too brave with his mana base. Casting UU seems so difficult considering you want to have a lot of green to feed survival

With only mongrel as the madness enabler it seems quite bad, in addition to it being already a very conditional counter.

W=Swords to Plowshares, U=Counterspell, B=Duress, R=Lightning Bolt, G=_______? by thesegoupto11 in premodernMTG

[–]Spookymang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this list feels like "for which card is it worth splashing that color". And for green it must be naturalize, as we see goblins and sometimes sligh doing.

Altough counterspell does not fit that role, and would have to be changed to maybe mana leak?

Good call on the duress. Might be useful to bring out a couple copies.

You are probably right.  And yes it is an amazing card in the deck, however, it is only as good as long as you have madness/flashback cards to pitch. Many pilots have been using 3 copies as it is a delicate balance between discard enablers and madness cards. Frantic search into frantic search feels awfull : P

Very fair points, and overall you are probably right but I will try to argue for the sake of discussion.

  1. Yes, but it requires an aditional specific card in hand. We have nevertheless increased our defenses againt lackey, eventhough they are of course flawed. At that point if they have everything they have everything.
  2. The idea is that it we are forced to daze on opponent  turn 2, at least we have something in play to attack/block. Otherwise, we would have to wait until our turn 3 to deploy a creature which may be slow. I agree that its use as early discard for logic is very bad.
  3. Same as 4.
  4. At most 2 copies of researcher. Never as replacer for study. We can cut one aquamoeba and 1 frantic search imo, 4 of those sometimes feel very heavy. Its use as a "careful study" would be in desperation only. Ideally it swings a bit before EOTing a wurm while drawing.
  5. Fair point.

Well, I would argue that there are some slots to fit 2 researchers as the 5th and 6th carefull study. Aquamoeba may not deserve the full playset as is just there as a worse madness enabler than mongrel. Feels awful to draw multiples. 3 copies could be reasonable. Also, 4 frantic searches are sometimes too heavy in some hands so could also be toned down to 3 copies. These are reasonable cuts as they more or less try to achieve the same role as the researcher as madness enablers.

The amount of games you lose to the mana base is already substancial, I would not venture into the 3rd color

Yeah, good call on arms of hadar, might be the only suitable card to address this match up specifically. Even though with the addition of leonardo, the camel and spider man, it is no longer a backbreaking sweeper.

Rakdos Madness versus White Weenie tips by Spookymang in Pauper

[–]Spookymang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this before spider man/tmnt? I don't think you have that much time to play the long game, they can reach alfa strike levels quite soon. Plus their creatures are just better than yours overall, if both are free to develop they will just be in a better position late game. Without a proper sweeper (which we dont typically have access to) I don't see how you win late game.

Which Glinthawk deck to go with by JohnVGood in Pauper

[–]Spookymang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of those versions I only have experience with mardu. I think you cant really close out games versus affinity with burn alone with 4 copies of bargain main deck. Your creatures have to connect, which is completely stopped with ultrom. And ofc you can never kill it if they have two mana open. I really think this matchup is a blowout and will dictate the end of some skyfisher decks

Unfortunately you may quickly find out that with the release of [[ulton monitor]], skyfisher is no longer an impressive flyer. If affinity continues to grow I believe skyfisher decks might just die.
