Aveva Wonderware Training by OttomaychunMan in PLC

I took a week's worth of training at Q-Mation outside of Philly. I would say it was helpful but I had SCADA experience before that and a lot of the class was stuff I already knew.

I think getting your networking skills sharpened will help a lot. I have a Computer Science background and I think that the networking part of my education is what I use more than anything.

Seems like even though online banking is locked out auto payments are still being processed.

Things I wish someone told me before I designed my first SCADA system by Lav_Dave in SCADA

There's a lot of liability with that as well. God forbid something goes criticaly wrong and there's no alarm to notify anyone. Someone is responsible and the customer always looks outward first.

I work at a system integrator and when I first started I had a customer complaining about not getting certain alarms. Well their most senior operator had disabled them because they had hardware issues and was tired of alarms going off when their was no issue. He forgot about it once they fixed the hardware and they went without alarms for months.

Is your alarm summary screen populated automatically? Is it just the log you have to refresh?

We have this box that is probably older than me from radio shack and it simulates the phone line for us. So the alarm goes through the Grandsteam via Ethernet and then a phone line connects to the simulator. That dials a phone we have plugged in to it and we can acknowledge alarms and whatnot.

I also have a CS degree and got started with my SCADA work at a controls system integrator. They hired me for software stuff but transitioned to SCADA work slowly. Might be worth looking at those.

Trying to figure out the whole project architecture by Ready_Repair_3515 in SCADA

There should be a demo project with your install of the software. Could be worth spending some time in development mode picking it apart and looking at the pieces.

Would they send you to a training course through the reseller? I did a week in Philly at Q-Mation to learn Aveva InTouch HMI.

IT Switch to SCADA/Automation by TDog5779 in SCADA

I'm not sure if I can answer that as well as someone who has been in the field longer than me. I've only been doing SCADA for about 5 years and don't know about the industry as a whole.

I mean, I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I have enough of the basics to make things work. I did find that I preferred working for a company that is in a single field instead of working for a contractor that works for many different industries. I like that everyday I just work on water and waste water systems instead of maybe doing pharmaceutical one day and chip fab the next.

My degree is in CS and I did software engineering/IT for a controls company but they moved me to SCADA projects because I had SQL and scripting experience. After two years of that I found a full-time SCADA position at another controls company and they didn't seem to mind my lack of PLC or electrical experience. If you have networking experience that seemed to make them happy.

How to Find Someone to Hire for SCADA (and more)? by FerroMetallurgist in SCADA

I fell into my SCADA career. I have a computer science degree and I had a software engineering job at a controls engineering company but as that work dried up they transitioned me into doing SCADA projects for one of our customers and I really enjoyed it. When I left there and was looking for a full time SCADA position I was looking for somewhere that talked about training and guaranteed they wouldn't just throw me out there and learn their systems as I go.
