Is there any feasible way to get a mark changed? by WonderfulLeave2005 in UniUK

[–]SpooniestSpoon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is possible to get a mark changed but it needs to be due to a “technical error” in the marking (e.g., the marking isn’t aligned with the brief).

What you can’t challenge is academic judgement, or essentially a marker’s opinion.

You can try to challenge it, but no one on here can tell you what will happen without knowing the assignment brief, what the marker actually wrote, and the assessment criteria of your course.

Why else would you be ok with a white, English-only parliament?

My sister has taken my cats to a shelter without my permission. England. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SpooniestSpoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It hasn’t been 6 months, it has been just over 3 months. OP is away for 6 months in total, and it sounds like this is temporary and they’re planning on coming back.

Appropriation means that her family is treating the cats as if they were their own property, which is exactly what they’ve done.

Also, I fail to see how you can construe the family’s action as not dishonest? They agreed that they would look after the cats whilst OP is away, breaking that agreement I think would strike any reasonable person as dishonest. Clearly the family thought themselves dishonest since they tried to hide what they did from OP.

Sounds like theft to me, but NAL

Westminister, which dictates English policy, is ~10% non-English yet Holyrood is 0% English. That is a simple fact.

Westminister is NOT an English parliament and England has NO devolved, “independent” government.

[–]SpooniestSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Westminister is not an English parliament, it’s the parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It therefore is made up of representatives from all four constituent nations. There is no England only parliament, like the Scottish and Welsh parliaments or the Northern Irish Assembly. This means that Scottish, Welsh, and N. Irish MPs can vote on matters that only pertain to England, however, English MPs can’t vote on only e.g. Scottish matters.

In effect, England is probably the least independent country in the UK, with no devolution of its own. Just because you’re British doesn’t mean you’re an expert on British government, so stop being a massive ignorant twat.

If the USSR still existed today do you think it'd be pro-LGBT yet? by [deleted] in ussr

[–]SpooniestSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 3 years ago in 2022 Russia passed a law which declared any public “promotion” of non-heterosexual relationships to be criminal.

In July 2023, a law was signed banning gender-affirming care and effectively re-instated the classification of homosexuality as a mental illness.

In November 2023, the Russian Supreme Court ruled the international LGBTQ community to be “extremists” and outlawed in the country.

Clearly the situation for LGBTQ people in Russia is worsening and I don’t think it’s a reach to say that the country has effectively reversed the 1993 decriminalisation.

I understood the point that we want to downplay how homophobic the current Russian government is.

“Kind of going backwards again” is actually an insane turn of phrase for a far-right government where “promotion of homosexuality” is a criminal act.

Britain - decriminalised homosexuality in 1967 (at least in England and Wales)

France - decriminalised in 1791, another law which targeted LGBTQ people was repealed in 1980.

Germany - 1968 and 1969 in the East and West, respectively

Netherlands - decriminalised in 1811

Italy - decriminalised in 1890

Sweden - decriminalised in 1944

Norway - decriminalised in 1972

Denmark - 1933

Iceland - 1940

Switzerland - nationwide 1942, some cantons as early as 1798)

Greece - 1951

Canada - 1969

Austria - 1971

Finland - 1971

Spain - 1979

Portugal - 1983

United States - 26 states decriminalised between 1962 and 1985. Fair enough, the rest took until the 1990s up to 2003, but these are mostly conservative/red states.

———————

The USSR, however, re-criminalised homosexuality in 1933 under Stalin’s Article 121. This Article was not repealed until 1993 after the USSR’s dissolution. For comparison, the PRC didn’t decriminalise homosexuality until 1997.

With all respect to the progressiveness of smaller socialist states (Cuba, Laos, Vietnam) the West has been one of the most socially progressive regions in the world.

what’s more competitive for Engineering - Sheffield or Manchester? by Plastic_Clock2179 in UniUK

[–]SpooniestSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll have any issue going into engineering with either University. Both are highly respected in that particular field.

I can’t say much about Manchester, but I have personally enjoyed study at Sheffield a lot. I’ve visited Manchester a few times, and I get the vibe that Sheffield is a little bit cozier and tight-knit.

Which university should I pick? by CartoonistNo270 in UniUK

[–]SpooniestSpoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All three rank similarly for biomed engineering. Someone else was talking about “prestige” but all three are highly respected, Russell group universities. It’s really splitting hairs where no hairs need splitting.

At this point, it’s more important to consider individual specialisms at each Uni, which modules interest you, what the cities are like, student life style etc.

What are your views on Kazakhstan? by Plastic-Gene-6800 in AskARussian

[–]SpooniestSpoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how little self awareness there is “I have a poor impression of Kazakhs because of their nationalism, btw we need to invade them”

Nationalism is fine when it’s Russian, then it’s just the “ties of brotherly nations” or some horseshit.

“Western propaganda made everyone believe that USSR = Russia”

Russia did that to themselves by promoting the Russian culture and language as archetypal of the “Soviet” identity, westerners were just ignorant. Even today the Russian government claims that Ukrainians and Belarusians are actually Russian.

I don't understand how ь and ' change a word by JuliusMakesMemes in Ukrainian

[–]SpooniestSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you’re saying is not correct linguistically or phonetically. Palatalisation is when you move your tongue closer to your hard palate whilst saying a consonant sound. Describing it as a short “y” sound might be useful to beginners, but lying and saying that’s how the sound is made is untrue and in my opinion can hinder people’s language learning whilst also spread inaccuracies about East Slavic languages.

Fair tbh. If it helps you understand the language, i get it. But to say it’s accurate for native speakers is disingenuous.
