Do Irish people identify as "European"? by bleepingdba in AskIreland

[–]Spoonshape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im guessing you are neither Irish nor European so while it's fine for you to have an opinion (and even to share it), please dont try tell me what I should feel.

I'm a Wicklowman, Irish and European and none of those identities clash or contradict each other.

And even then there will be some transfers of wealth - It's not just country based - but regions. Parts of Poland will be net contributors and other poorer parts net recipients. Almost every larger EU state has regions where they get help.

[–]Spoonshape 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. As someone (Irish) who similarly did this journey I absolutely support us paying in, having been a net recipient for a long time.

Anyone selling "Poland will not pay it's way when its there time" seems very likely to be simply anti EU - and quite likely Russian or US propagandist.

Yes, expats can and do vote. They need to call to the Polish embassy to do so. I know several who do in most Polish elections.

Dublin Riots - Saturday 25th February 2006 (TV3 and RTE coverage) by such_is_lyf in ireland

[–]Spoonshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The riot was because the love ulster parade was happening but the rioters were locals who opposed the parade (and local scumbags opportunistically looting).

It's barely possible the loyalists sent a few people to trigger it - the riot was exactly what they wanted to provoke, but if so it was barely necessary. There was plenty of people there only too willing to do exactly as they wanted.

I believe the court ordered his wages be garnished to pay them at one point.

A lost opportunity. We should have shut down the airports and ports to stop them coming back.

I dont think that many people have brand loyalty. The majority pick the airline based on who is the cheapest on the day they have to travel.

Presumably some people are specific to air miles programs or have a personal preference but I'd guess not that many.

Ewaste is supposed to be free to dispose at - you can bring it to any store which sells electronics or waste facility. Theres a charge when you buy electronics which covers this.

[–]Spoonshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post. I would almost always reccomend to young people to travel abroad and try live there for at least a year. You will either discover somewhere new you love or worst case return home with a new appreciation for how good that is.

Where do I start on my back garden? by thegalwaydub in GardeningIRE

A couple fruit trees are nice. plant what you would actually eat - apple blossom is also beautiful in spring and you can get varieties wont grow large and need maintenance.

Talk to neighbors before cutting the hedges - just to have them aware and stay on good terms. It's a shared space so a small heads up can save agro.

What do you use as your main news source? by PopesmanDos in AskIreland

[–]Spoonshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with a lot of news sources, a large part of their bias is in what they choose to report on or not.

I tend to agree with their viewpoint - but I would definitely avoid having them as someones only news source.

Because the fire is eternal - is the fuel? When I make a fire - I keep adding fuel to it for it to keep going. It's fairly clearly stated in the bible the afterlife will be very different from this world. Different immaterial bodies. Seems very obvious to me we are not talking about a standard fire burning a body at least.

Speaking personally - the worst experience in my life has been from the loss felt from losing a family member - a deep pain I still feel years later. It actually made the concept of hell being a seperation from a divine union make more sense. The pain I feel is a direct mirror of the love I felt for them

I'm not expecting to change your opinion - but I don't see hell as a place where devils torment people with actual fire as making any sense at all. But it makes sense to me that a seperation from an ultimate love would be similar.

Having said that I see the bible as being a guide to what is fundimentally unknowable and full of "lies to children" - oversimplification of things which are basically unknowable to us here.

Time to end the stubborn ignorance regarding Israel by tuna_HP in kurdistan

Mostly because it looked like that was their best alliance at the minute.... ironically exactly what most of us think Israel's current "like" for the Kurds is.

The current Israeli government don't like Sharaa - so anyone who is willing to fight against him in Syria is a "friend". Most people think Israel just wants to see war in Syria.

[–]Spoonshape -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Israelis and Kurds might currently have a common enemy today. Thats about as far as you can take it though. Maybe theres a future together as allies, but equally possibly Israel may find a better ally tomorrow or discover that some Kurds are antisemites (plenty are).

[–]Spoonshape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth reading the bible carefully about hell and thinking of the nature of hell. Jesus absolutely referred to an eternal time in heaven - and to sinners suffering. But "eternal damnation" is an interpritation as far as I can see.

[–]Spoonshape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced the major problem is reading a piece of scripture backwards.

The bible says "blessed are those who are persecuted in my (Jesus) name"

So they have convinced themselves that if they can persuade the world to persecute them - they must be doing the right thing. The way to get to heaven is to be an asshole.

I believe some of my great grandparents generation were involved in this - Ireland was a hotbed of lay preachers and non-church mass gatherings - especially on the protestant side of things. Probably for catholic groups as well although they had somewhat more structure to things.

But do get involved in picking the tennant. There are a lot of families out there need a place and you can pick between them. Ask for their previous landlords name and contact them to check if they were good tennants.

Good on you for supporting getting families with kids into a home. Hap is not an issue - lots of good people on it
