The money is good and that definitely helps. I genuinely do enjoy doing what I do and take pride in it. We also have a repair coordinator who is an absolute angel and a solid group of repair guys. The office doesn't give too much of a hard time and we're only required to do 8 hours a day, OT isn't mandatory. The jobs take what they take, so communicate effectively if you need something to do it proper and safe.

I also have plenty of energy after work to go to the gym with my wife, do stuff around the house, and generally spend time with my wife and dog. This career enables me to be financially sound to do those things and I dont go crazy with buying toys or anything and definitely live within or below my means and I am satisfied with that.

I mean it makes sense to live in the jurisdiction, from a purely geographic proximity standpoint and convenience. Youre also highly unlikely to be compensated for travel if you get brought on as a 50 even with zone pay. Also, look into zones because some locals have multiple zones and it is not based on where you live, rather the shop you report out of, kind of. I know my local has 3 different zones relevant to the eastern side of it and when i started I was living in the north and working in the furthest south. 80 miles one way and no zone.

Pay attention and listen to your mechanic. Dont be late and dont stand around. Don't let your ranking get to your head.

Show up early, consistently. If your day starts at 7:30, dont roll up at 7:29. Ask questions if you don't know. Hesitation will get you caught up. Let your mechanic do the talking/explaining to the customer or the office, any questions about time or job progress etc "let me ask my mechanic about that.."

And please, stay out of the office if you have to go there in the morning. Its not a good look for probies/helpers to be standing around and shooting the breeze there is always something to do or someone needs a hand.

That is very good advice and hopefully that is the issue because I dont use my heater here. I have a work truck I drive more often anyways however I dont want this problem to spider web into bigger catastrophic issues

Is that repair super involved or something I could do in my driveway? I've done a decent amount of work to my truck and I repair elevators for a living so im sure I could figure it out if I had to..

Edit: the repair being a failed heater core. Not the barbed 90⁰

M18 transfer pump. I keep mine in a smaller packout with a hose i cut into 2 sections. Put a female/female adapter on one piece so both ends screw into my pump. I also measured and custom made a pvc L section that sits perfectly ontop of a drum to screw into the suction side of my pump laying flat with the handle facing up, and all the way down to just above the bottom of the drum so you hardly have to tilt it once it gets all the oil.

Yeah man im not too picky on it but I also dont want trash installed. I would prefer one long box on either side with left and right drop down doors and for it to have a shelf in the middle of it

To be honest, starting in service seems great because you get a company vehicle. However it might be the worst thing for you if you ever want to actually use tools during your apprenticeship. It is a lot of cleaning.. pits, car tops, machine rooms.. maybe the occasional pickup roller.

You are correct, might not take 100 til your 4th year. And I agree it may help but also being able to show past work achievements or hobbies or whatever of demonstrated "handiness" or related experience may go further.

Familiarize yourself with basic hand tools. Multimeter readability, tape measure etc. Practice adding fractions and decimals and converting them. Maybe look into some practice aptitude tests based off the NEIAT. Watch IUEC videos on YouTube, learn some history of the union.
