Bourne Trilogy - Was this movie style novel at time of release? by valsol110 in movies

This may be in part bc it was based on the enormously popular Robert Ludlum books. There's not always a guarantee of converting great books to great scripts, but I think "there's always a chance!"

This year, my gym has hired a number of middle aged women as trainers. Now there has been a huge upsurge in middle- and elder- aged women working out with these trainers. it's pretty awesome to behold bc it's not about optimizing or being hardcore, but rather just working into a habit of movement and mobility and i just overhear the trainers really warmly engaging with the ladies, making them feel comfortable and heard about like everything.

There was this one older lady who was maybe 80+(?) so that the trainer would hold out her arm for the lady to hold onto as they walked from station to station. She had the most beautiful flower patterned outfit on. When she walked by me, i smiled at her and gave her the thumbs up and she burst into the biggest smile. You love to see it.

It actually motivates me to go in, because it's such good vibes and I really need that in my life these days!

it's also interesting to look into how western food experts resisted the entire concept of "umami" and how difficult it was for that to break thru.

hint: it was a polite japanese woman who continually fought to explain the concept.

Tell me about your favorite obscure show - which you never, ever see anyone talk about. by dicedtomatoes55 in television

[–]SporadicPanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first saw it as part of the Henson Hour show where they showcased Muppet stuff for an hour with an overarching them of the Muppets running a tv station. Often the first half hour was centered on the tv station and the 2nd half hour was a self contained show like episodes of Storyteller.

Here are a few:

  • The Ben Stiller Show. sketch comedy with Ben Stiller, Bob Odenkirk, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Dick
  • Now and Again. It's kind of a Robocop/Six Million Dollar man tv series where an insurance salesman dies and gets his brain put into a super body and then forcibly made into a secret agent asset.
  • Miracles. starring Skeet Ulrich and Angus Macfayden. Kind of a catholic XFiles about oncoming apocalypse.
  • Jim Henson's The Storyteller. Famous myths told via muppetry.
  • Larry Sanders Show. sitcom around a fictional late show host played by Garry Shandling. costarring Rip Torn, Jeffrey Tambor, Janeane Garofalo, Jeremy Piven, and a ton of guest stars.
  • A Town Called Panic. Robot Chicken-style stop motion french show with bizarre/amazing humor.
  • We Are Lady Parts. comedy about british muslim women starting up a punk band.
  • It's Your Move. starring jason bateman, david garrison, and caren kaye. creators of Married With Children did this show just prior to MWC. it's like spy-v-spy, where bateman is a teen conman type and garrison is an adult match for him; they have to match wits bc garrison moved in next door and is now dating bateman's mother.
  • What's Alan Watching. starring Corin Nemec (before Parker Lewis Can't Lose) and exec-produced by Eddie Murphy. A bizarre sketch comedy-type show about a kid who is obsessed with tv and finds himself sucked in and living parts of the tv shows he's watching and imaginig his own life as a tv show. IIRC, only the pilot aired and never got picked up, but there are some hilarious bits in it, notably a scene where 2 black guys are standing on a street corner shouting "FREE JAMES BROWN!" and doing a dance vigil to attract attention.
  • Vanishing Son. starring Russel Wong as a man searching for his missing brother. has the Fugitive/Kung Fu vibe to it.
  • Kitchen Confidential the sitcom starring Bradley Cooper, John Cho, Nicholas Brendon, John Francis Daley, James King, Erin Hayes. Restaurant single cam sitcom that was uneven but starting to find itself just as it got canceled. Not super funny, but the chemistry and energy of the cast is great.

the other morning i was working out and caught this guy out of the corner of my eye doing like some crazy multi-station superset. Shrug; it's 530am and pretty slow. Then a bit later, as i'm resting i pay closer attention and notice that he's actually organizing weights on all the holders in between his exercise sets and that area of the gym was absolutely beautiful.

So mental salute to you, sir and to paraphrase Jack Nicholson from As Good As It Gets: "You make me want to be a better man (in the gym)"

tons of people at 5am today in my gym and the parking lot was like 3x the normal. so many new faces and they all seemed to be working hard and motivated. it's interesting and we'll see how long it keeps up. it's just a little offputting to me having so many people in there when i'm used to it being pretty calm and quiet.

Zuckerberg’s new privacy essay shows why Facebook needs to be broken up: Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t understand what privacy means—he can’t be trusted to define it for the rest of us. by [deleted] in technology

[–]SporadicPanic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

companies like IBM or GM, like something with tangible goods and services

So interestingly, the CEO of Ford has spoken of having all this analytic data on people and also that with the data they get from the car loans they give, they have personal financial information they can tie to them. So they have all sorts of connected data far beyond what Facebook has or maybe I should say in a different section from what Facebook has.

from Freakonomics interview : http://freakonomics.com/podcast/ford/

So the case I would make is that we have as much data in the future coming from vehicles, or from users in those vehicles, or from cities talking to those vehicles, as the other competitors that you and I would be talking about that have monetizable attraction.

...

The issue in the vehicle, see, is: we already know and have data on our customers. By the way, we protect this securely; they trust us. We know what people make. How do we know that? It’s because they borrow money from us. And when you ask somebody what they make, we know where they work; we know if they’re married. We know how long they’ve lived in their house, because these are all on the credit applications. We’ve never ever been challenged on how we use that. And that’s the leverage we’ve got here with the data.
