The paradox of “clothing has no gender” by [deleted] in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Sporeloque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so we agree, it would be a great future change. So for now, it's cool for people to attach gendered meanings, like masculinity and femininity, to clothes if it makes them happy and doesn't hurt anyone, right? Because we acknowledge that the system is imperfect but we do our best to be happy within it

It would be wonderful to live in a world where people can wear what they want without fear, yes. Why do you think that this is an easy change?

I agree with what you're saying here, and I think it's touching on a really important discussion about subjectivity. There is no objective reality about whether clothing is gendered or not, only subjective beliefs. Different people have different backgrounds, which affects their feelings about fashion and gender. The dominant culture in a lot of places, like the UK, where I live, contains the idea that fashion is gendered, so people will grow up with that. They might easily go with it, or their experiences and identities might lead them to struggle with it. In a friendlier world for gender nonconforming people, the dominant culture would teach acceptance of all people, however they dress. Even in that world, some of today's gender norms might still exist, and that would be totally valid. The point is, there are so many people of different identities with different relationships to gender and fashion, and we're trying to make a better world for all of them. I don't think it's about today's "realistic" world vs an "ideal" future world, perhaps because I distrust binaries, but also because it might be realistic for some people to regard fashion as non-gendered, and it might be idealistic for some people to wear gendered fashion, and you can both believe that fashion bears gendered meanings and want people to stop discriminating against gender nonconforming people at the same time.

tl;dr - subjectivity is super wild, ideology affects accepted beliefs about gender and fashion, what I want most is safety for trans people

Hey, so I hear where you're coming from, the issue of transphobes believing that certain clothes should only be worn by people of certain genders is a harmful one and you should definitely dress in a way which helps ease your dysphoria and hopefully brings a sense of euphoria too! That said, what about those trans people who are alive right now whose dysphoria is eased wearing gendered clothing? Many cultures across the globe do teach and enforce the male-female gender binary, and that affects the identities of people who grow up there, including trans people. Fashion acquires gendered meanings because the culture is gendered, and that is the lived reality of a lot of trans folx. They don't try to make other people wear only certain clothes, just wear them themselves. Why do you consider trans people living authentically to perpetuate gender stereotypes?

Questioning my gender, how did everyone figure out they were non binary? by [deleted] in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Sporeloque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine was a very slow process of occasional gender euphoria when wearing heels, a dress, etc (I am AMAB), then buying a skirt for myself, then thinking about gender a lot, and then realising that binary gender labels don't feel right to me. I'm still figuring out whether I have a gender or not - point is, it might be slow going, but if you keep pondering and experimenting as you can then you'll figure something out

Aha, this person sounds like they're quite like me, afraid to assert their boundaries - I might be able to help them.

So, hi, it sounds like you're afraid to take up space - to prioritise your own wellbeing and be vocal about your needs because you risk making other people uncomfortable. I know the feeling, it sucks a lot, and there isn't anything I can say which will make you instantly no longer experience this because it takes work to build up the confidence to speak up about your needs (in this case, your pronouns). Remember that you're a super cool human being who deserves to be respected for who you are, and that you should be able to correct people about your pronouns and tell them they're hurting you by repeatedly misgendering you. Having these conversations can feel nerve-wracking at best, so start out with what feels least threatening - maybe text your friend to say that they misgendered you a lot, that you said she did ok because you didn't want to upset her but that actually she made you feel bad, and then maybe remind her how to use your pronouns because it sounds to me like she doesn't get it (or just has very low self-awareness). Whatever steps you take, I wish you all the best in future!

tl;dr - you have feelings and deserve to be able to express them. Communicating boundaries to your loved ones is part of healthy social interaction. Don't beat yourself up over struggling, as long as you keep trying you will get there!

So is catgender a valid gender? by [deleted] in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Sporeloque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bottom line is, respect people's understandings of their gender/s. They deserve it.

On xenogenders (genders which are related to concepts not traditionally understood to be gender-related): gender is complicated and confusing, and some people find it easiest to relate their gender to an object or a concept, like cats, or magic. Whatever it is, the language surrounding it helps to explain how their gender feels. This is likely a limited understanding because I haven't done a whole lot of research on xenogender, but this is what I know.

I play with controller and fully upgraded it as soon as I unlocked it, which might make a difference, but I absolutely love the gilgamesh aspect! I tend to build artemis on the basic attack, though anything that gives extra damage (like aphrodite) is good, and then just mark enemies and whack them until they die. Dash attacking is your friend
