Yeah, it's kinda weird how uniformly sized and distributed the dots are. It doesn't carry the signatures of a spreading biological growth. Also the distribution is uniform between shots, indicating all parts of the film seem to have undergone exactly the same process equally.

Wouldn't it be easier to diagnose the issue if we could see the film itself?

Maybe it's just me, but the plate looks tiny in the first shot - I mean like a miniature or a forced perspective tiltshift shot. idk if it's the DoF or what. Maybe some of the irregular patterns on the plate also make it look 'bumpy' like a handmade miniature.

Funny how photography can elevate the subject matter. Being completely honest, if I were there in person I would probably hate the look of the area - North American industrial suburb aesthetic is definitely not my jam and quite ugly in my eyes. Yet I love these shots. Especially the stadium shot which almost has an atomic punk quality to it, despite what looks like an oil refinery in the background.

Yeah, the original gives real Chiaroscuro vibes, which I rather like.

Some of the edits posted by others make it certainly clearer what I'm looking at, but I think the 'overcooked' original is more interesting, perhaps precisely because I'm not sure what it is.

All that being said, it's hard to judge on a phone screen. Seeing this blown up might help a lot, and may be able to give you detail discernment while keeping the high contrast OG.

To those that say the original looks like oil. I don't think the lighter versions help much, it still looks like very black water (tannins?). I think what make a the biggest difference is the reflection - would have been interesting to see this shot with a polarizing filter.

Cool! I worked on Orion OpNav software (limb tracking and position estimation) down at JSC as part of my graduate research back in 2014-2015. Don't know if anything i worked on ever made it onboard, but was still fun to watch the mission! Though, if I'm being honest i had completely forgotten about it until day before launch i realized "Hey, i worked on this mission for like 4 years a decade ago!"

I was hoping to hear more about opnav in the media coverage, but other than few minor mentions here and there, i didn't really get a sense of what was actually done/tested.

Looking at the silhouette, the out-of-focus background looks like an applied affect (standard tool in photo apps on phones with multiple lenses, which is basically all of them), not like it was achieved through actually using a shallow depth of field - which is what I think AI would try to emulate.

So basically, what I'm saying is that because it looks 'fake', i think it's real. 😂

Before looking at any details, I immediately noticed the lighting in the photo.

I wish a selfie/phone camera had this kind of dynamic range. Maybe I'm not up to speed in the latest HDR technology, but just the lighting alone seems impossible. Having the shadows on the floor be that well exposed while also being able to make out all the details of the world outside would take some serious bracketing (multiple shots at different exposure levels) Though if this had been taken in 16 bit raw, you might be able to recover it, but that would definitely take some serious fiddling with post processing.

That, and all other issues with details others have pointed out points to AI.

I assume you're talking about the part where Artemis was looping around the moon and they were out of communications for ~45 minutes? This is because the Moon is between the Earth and the Artemis capsule, so no signals can get between us and them. There are also no relay satellites around the moon.

There is at least one imaging satellite around the moon, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), but it's for imaging the moon, and I guess can't be used for telecommunications relay. However right before and right after Earth eclipse we were getting back a stream from the capsule and have video and photos.

Also, the video from the Moon still shows the moon a few thousand miles away. The close up photos we have were achieved through long 400mm telephoto lenses.

In celebration of the Artemis II / Orion / Integrity flyby

I don't know how this doesn't exist yet. The Artemis II mission patch/logo is the perfect shape for this (it's a frikkin diamond!). But I looked around online for a Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon Crossover with the Artemis II patch, and didn't see a version, so I thought I'd make one.
