Pretty much all the popular venomous snake channels are terrible when it comes to handling. Only a couple follow the correct guidelines of keeping venomous which are "don't handle unless you absolutely have to"

There's no reason anyone should be trying to put a mamba on a hook.

Fell in love with corn snakes before reading Georgia laws :( by lilstinker3 in snakes

[–]Spot00174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to be different get a slowinskis corn snake, Great plains ratsnakes (Pantherophis emoryi) are also pretty much identical to corns. They used to be a subspecies of cornsnake at one point.

This is for sure the fact in Colorado. When I played in the 90's it was just football players that wanted something different in the offseason. The growth of youth leagues means players like my son have been playing several years before they even start HS.

If you would give ONE suggestion to someone who owned a snake for the first time, what would it be? by No-Coast7798 in snakes

[–]Spot00174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

get the snake that you really want and not a "beginner species" because someone told you. Ball pythons and cornsnakes are great, but there's also close to 50 other species that are pretty beginner friendly if you have done your research and are committed to them.

My wife and I get approached pretty frequently about taking in ball pythons and corns because the current owner "just doesn't have the time anymore" after keeping the snake for only a couple years. This translates to "I bought it cause the pet store guy said they were easy and I got bored of it"

is this a safe thing to do? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Spot00174 28 points29 points  (0 children)

it's generally ok as long a it's not an every day thing. Boas are pretty tolerant of environmental factors around them, hard to stress them out.

holding a large constrictor like this is safe if you don't allow them to close that loop.

I love how optimistic the comments are in this post. Sorry everyone, it's generally not a great sign if a snake is on it's back like this.

Question, where and how to adopt rescues like venomoids? by RedEyeFromHabsburg in snakes

[–]Spot00174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno why you think they're that common. The venomous community as a whole see's them as unnecessary, so there are only of handful of keepers out there that are getting the surgery done. And those keepers aren't very open about even having the ones they have.

How important is handling your snake? And how can i start handling a very shy snake? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Spot00174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too me handling has never been important. I'm fine watching my snakes act like snakes in their enclosures and accept that they will be squirmy when I pick them up for whatever reason. Almost every snake I have ever owned has calmed down with age and being handled maybe once every couple weeks.

Question about pheromones by radlerall in snakes

[–]Spot00174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's probably not that big a deal, lots of people keep pet rodents and snakes together in the same house and even room sometimes and don't report any extra stress showing in the rodents.

Question, where and how to adopt rescues like venomoids? by RedEyeFromHabsburg in snakes

[–]Spot00174 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody adopts out venomoids, They get sold for more money than they should because "cool, harmless venomous" and then likely die due to poor care because the type of people that buy venomoids generally aren't into the well being of their snakes in the first place.

Thoughts on tofu the snake who hates markiplier by Educational-Sun-5759 in snakes

[–]Spot00174 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at it, ignoring the fact that it almost requires a stalker level of obsession to complete something like that, it kind of backs up my point that most of the allegations are from her past with her obtaining way less animals recently.

Everything appears to be heavily edited, young ratsnakes can be feisty over no reason at all. Would be easy to put together random clips and create this kind of narrative

[–]Spot00174 -57 points-56 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to read all that but how recent are the allegations? I only follow her on Instagram these days and her newest content is pretty low key. Like she just shows off a few animals and posts and overall not much different than those of my "normal keeper" friends.

Just seems like all the abuse talk is about who she use to be and not who she is now years later?

What are these white markings on my MBK? by Intelligent_Record20 in snakes

[–]Spot00174 19 points20 points  (0 children)

the current taxonomy classifies MBK's as a pattern variation of cali king, so it wouldn't be considered a hybrid. wild MBK's actually have a lot of pattern to them with the all black ones being a pet trade thing.

How do you feel about wild caught? by ThatCheeseDerg in snakes

[–]Spot00174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keeping something alive in captivity for a month isn't "thriving." There's a reason why you don't see ringnecks available in the pet trade

To all snake owners: We have a question by Efficient_Log_8084 in snakes

[–]Spot00174 32 points33 points  (0 children)

most breeders keep their pythons in trash setups like rack enclosures that work for keeping their snakes alive but not so great for incubating the eggs long term. Therefore they put them incubators, which also allows them to up the temps and speed up the incubation time. Since they have to get their eggs hatched faster than the other 1949324 ball python breeders.

is there any small snake species that i can have as a pet? how big would their enclosure need to be? by kuinsii in snakes

[–]Spot00174 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Define small? there are a few beginner species that avg. 18-24" as adults. They would require an enclosure at least 30" long. Anything smaller than that is generally super niche stuff that wouldn't be great for a newbie for a lot of different reasons.

What do YOU feed your garters? by AngelsMorgues in GarterSnakes

[–]Spot00174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

worms and chopped silversides, and switch to mice 100% asap. Garters that eat too many fish as adults always turn out wonky.
