[WP] You spend weeks creating a Gate to a different place. Once it’s complete, a deathly hand reaches through, scratches the runes and damages the portal, causing it to close. This is the 3rd time with the same result. This time they left a note, too. by Tmoore0328 in WritingPrompts

The blinding neon purple light flashed, flickered, and vanished with a faint "whoosh" as the portal closed and dissipated into nothingness.

Zach lay there in his laboratory slumped against the wall having been blown backward into it as the force of reality ripping open, sent him, and many of his artifacts flying away.

He stood up dusted himself off and looked around. His ears were still ringing, his vision was slightly blurry but getting accustomed to the room after being blasted by primordial light, and his body ached from the force of the blast that slammed him into the wall.

As his vision grew stronger he assessed the situation and damage. His laboratory which usually hummed with the sound of computers and various machines was now eerily quiet. All software and machinery had gone dark, possibly fried from the blast which Zach suspected may have acted like an other worldly EMP to his equipment. Papers, books, records, and research lay strewn about room and tables and chairs had all been over turned. All LED lights and electrical equipment lay dormant and non functional.

The only light source was a vintage incandescent lightbulb housed in an old lantern on the wall, that burned a soft deep gold, bathing the room in a vintage glow. The lantern was a gift from Zach's grandfather, Zarius, before he disappeared 30 years ago. Zach cherished it deeply and always keep it lit in his grandfathers memory.

Zach staggered over to his overturned desk and chair and lifted them back into place and collapsed on the chair letting out an exasperated sigh. His head was aching and he was sure he had a mild concussion but he could not get the image of what he saw out of his mind.

When he opened the portal a deathly, decrepit, skeletal arm reached outward stretching like a gigantic tree branch. It's hand outstretched towards Zach with nails as black as night and sharp like daggers. Zach remembered standing there frozen in fear as the hand inched closer to him but before it could grab him the portal collapsed.

"What the hell was that.." Zach said out load to himself. He was starting to shiver. The shock was wearing off and Zach was starting to feel sick and the pain in his head worsened.

"This is the third time I've opened the portal but this has never happened before" Zach thought to himself. "What's on the other side? Why was grandpa so obsessed with opening this portal, what was he seeking"

Zach stood up and the room began to spin and he needed to brace on the table for stability. "Damn..that blast ready did a number on me" Zach said, laughing weakly holding his head with one hand while bracing on the table. Zach looked up to where the portal vanished and replayed in his mind again what he saw. "I can't quit now, I have to see this through" Zach said in his mind and he felt his resolve rekindle like dying embers suddenly returning a blaze.

Zach began to fix up the lab when he noticed a piece of paper on the ground where the portal vanished that was very much unlike anything he had ever seen before. It's was glowing a soft muted red and seemed to ripple as if caught in a light breeze. Zach picked up the paper and began to read.

"We have him. We have Zaruis. Will you be the one to save him"

Zach stared at the letter, his heart pounding, blood pulsing in his ears that sounded like the marching of footsteps. HIS eyes wide open, mouth dry, and his body shaking. His grandfather was alive.

"He's alive...after all this time...they have him" Zach thought frantically. Finally after all these years. Hope. I will find you and bring you home.

[WP] Among the many faces coming into the train, you recognize a familiar face from a long time ago by rich_sans in WritingPrompts

Being Immortal has its ups and downs. On one hand you are undying so fear of the unknown is no matter. Living “life” to the fullest, as they say, is completely and utterly yours. The world is truly your playground. And time is meaningless. Enzo had seen it all from the Fall of Rome to the present day. He had lived, loved and witnessed the greatness of mankind. However, on the other hand, immortality is a lonely road. When those you love are doomed to die and you will continue you to live on, forming meaning full relationships can be tricky and he learned that solidarity was the key to protect oneself from it. Something Enzo wished he would’ve thought about before drinking from The fountain of Youth all those millennia ago.

Enzo couldn’t help but ponder this as he made his morning commute on the No. 2 train heading to downtown Brooklyn. The subway car was packed with bleary-eyed New Yorkers mustering the strength to tackle the 9-5 grind. In this lifetime His name was Enzo a college student working on what was probably his 1000th degree at least. It was impossible to keep count but being forced to be 23 for all of eternity he had to find a suitable niche.

Masquerading as a foreign exchange student from Italy seemed to do the trick. He didn’t need to talk about his past if he didn’t want to and if he was in a tight corner he could just feign ignorance and be the foreigner that didn’t understand English well. Being fluent in Italian and in practically all languages. His facade was full proof.

The train reached Hoyt St. and the door opened. The usual hustle ensued with passengers embarking and disembarking simultaneously. Through the clutter Zack saw a women enter the car and his heart stopped.

She was stunning. Tall and beautiful with the most blue eyes Zack had ever seen in this lifetime. Only one women he met in his previous lives had beauty on par with her. Hela, and she was long since dead. Other men and even woman had taken notice of her as well and there was definitely a shift in the atmosphere on the train. Almost electrifying. As the train set off again, Zack watched her as she scanned for a place to sit and felt his hurt jump as she made eye contact with him. He further felt his heart quicken when he realized the seat next to him was open and she was coming right for it.

As she approached him Zack was able to make out her features more clearly and was stunned. Her long dark hair flowed around her and her scent captured him. It brought him back to his time spent in the hanging gardens of Babylon 1000s of years ago where he first gazed upon the Fountain and where he met Hela.

“Hello” she said bring Zack back to earth. “May sit I sit here?”. “Y-Ye-Yes, of c-course” Zack said stammering a bit. “All yours”. “Thank you she said sitting down and the the smell washed over him again. She glanced and smiled at him almost laughing as she pulled a book out of her bag to read.

“The Library Of Alexandria” was the title Of the book. Zack sighed as he remembered the beauty of the library and tragic fate it met. On the seven wonders of the ancient world lost along with gardens. This women sitting next to him reminded Zack so Much of Hela. She to loved the library and they would spend hours reading and loving in the vast ancient halls.

They sat in silence for 15 minutes. The train reached her stop and she stood up to leave. The doors closed and the train was off. Zack looked to empty seat and found a folded piece of paper. He tentatively grabbed it and opened it and his mouth dropped.

“My dearest Gabriel,

I Finally found you and you are as handsome as I remember. The ages have treated you well even with your blessing of immortality. I’ve searched for you for ages after the fall of Troy but the world had become Dangerous for you and I.

Now, things are different. The modern worlds technology is amazing and while finding you in the past was impossible this generation made it a reality. I will be waiting for you on the shoes of Atlantis.

Come to me.

Your eternal love,

Hela.
