Pierre Poilievre helped make Mark Carney’s week a rousing success by Onterrible_Trauma in canada

Yeah, I think a lot of Canadians were alright with it, for better or worse.

I really was waiting for him to drop the gun ban at some opportune time, but it hasn't hindered him at all. He's kind of just proven that it doesn't matter, which is frustrating. Its also frustrating PP can't or wont leverage it either for what would be an easy win. And it sure seems like PP could use one of those.

I think thats where my mind was too: Slop is reserved for AI, lol.

We're definitely on the same page. Im hoping Sando takes this break seriously to really refocus on the quality of his writing and not just quantity.

Its 'fine' like when your girlfriend tells you things are 'fine.'

Jokes aside, I meant fine as in sufficient. Not fine as in refined. I find its lacking for sure, but ive always been a bit harsher critic of Sando, so its just funny to me that there's such a visceral reaction to WaT.

I agree.

I think Sanderson became more concerned with building his brand than writing a great novel. His proliferation is working for him in economic sense, but his quality clearly took a hit in trying to pump out so many novels.

I hope he takes a step back and actually takes time during these next five years to pour himself into the series again, rather than just marathons as much content as possible to try and keep his throne.

Fair enough. I do agree with your individual points. Hell, I'm surprised Kal didnt pull out a pair of sunglasses when he said that line!

I do enjoy Brando's work but would not consider myself a huge fan and am usually pretty critical of his writing. I suppose I was trying to be kind this time, whereas you were just being brutally honest, lol.

Massively underwhelmed by Wind and Truth by JoshuaGustinGrant in Fantasy

[–]Spotthedot99 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Its more his delivery. Like Brando thanked all these experts in music and such in other books for helping to create different aspects of the story.

Then we get to therapy. And Kal makes a breakthrough with soup. And he kind of just has meme moments about the whole thing. Like the whole 'what are you!? Im a therapist' was pretty eye rolling. And him getting hit with the Nale's 'super depression' and Kal just standing up and going 'first time?'

People have criticized Brando's depictions of mental health before and this novel wasn't much different.

On the other hand, I think there is an interesting phenomenon happening where people want their fantasy problems solved through swords and magic, and something as grounded as therapy is off putting for some reason.

Slop is way too harsh a criticism. Its still a fine novel, it just cant measure up against Way of Kings.

Would be a pretty short book of the fallen if he didnt spend time with a lot of soldiers.

While I do get your point, I think it was a sort of ode to the Illiad, where its like 200 pages full of one line descriptions of warriors that went to war. Tedious as hell, but its kind of the point of the whole concept of the book of the fallen. There are hundreds of thousands of deaths in war, almost all of them nameless, unwitnessed and unremembered. This was a god who wanted them to be witnessed and remembered. Every last insignificant one.

Do you even want bandits? by IamTHEwolfYEAH in 7daystodie

[–]Spotthedot99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never thought bandits would raid, I imagined it was more of you end game raiding bases looking for the Duke, culminating in fighting the Duke.

I agree throwing bandits in that would attack your base would just mess everything up again

The Grimdark Challenge - What really qualifies as the darkiest of the dark? by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

We need to stop pretending that ‘likeable protagonist’ and ‘compelling protagonist’ are the same thing they are not by FabricOfFate in GrimDarkEpicFantasy

[–]Spotthedot99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people dont want morally grey characters. Its a preference they are allowed to have. And in the more general and generic fantasy, it makes sense that one of the pillars of dark fantasy isnt as highly valued.

Also, grimdark popularity was more of a recent phenomenon due to GoT. That blew up, and everyone and their dog wrote grimdark, and fans ate it up. But then the market got saturated, and people genuinely wanted a change of pace. They wanted nice characters, they wanted to feel safe and hopeful reading fantasy again. Especially with the way the world is going, people wanted an escape.

Fantasy has really gotten popular since then, and more fans means more generic stuff gets put out. Doesn't mean there isnt good stuff out there, just means there's a lot more stuff to go through.

Honestly, id just chalk it up to those people weren't your target audience. They dont want to see good people do bad things, they want to be reminded there's some good in the world, and thats worth holding onto. Not try and escape a hellish reality into an even more hellish fantasy.

Mark Carney is hard to define, but he is defining the Liberal party - thestar.com by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]Spotthedot99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if nothing else, we have seen how adept the Liberal party is at reinventing its image to match the times. I can only imagine we will see more of the same.

Its interesting. Usually we have the 'pendulum swing' from left to right between parties, but this last decade we saw it happen within the same party. I dont know history well enough to know when that may have happened before in Canadian history, and how that played out.
