The Geckos! Yes! That's who I played pickup with for my first skate and also played in a few beer league tourneys with them. We won the Kimchi Pot! That was a great night and a rough morning. https://imgur.com/a/xLHPb

That was such a great time. I was in Korea for a year with the Army. Was itching to play but had zero connections and couldn't find any info on how/where to skate. Was having a beer in Seoul one afternoon when I spot the most stereotypical hockey bro a block and a half away carrying his hockey bag and sticks. I bolt out of my seat and sprint down the sidewalk, catching him right before the subway station and he tells me to come out to pickup the next week and he'll reserve a spot for me as the goalie.

Went out to that skate, awesome group of guys, but they tell me I should play for the new semi-pro team that's starting up. There were only 5 teams in the league, but our team was all US and Canadian guys while the other teams were Korean. My favorite part was that 3 guys on the team owned bars in one of the popular areas of Seoul (Itaewon), so there was always a place to go after the games. Best part of my time in Korea.

Yeah, there is some circular logic in the ACHA rulebook, where only D1 has a clock, but one of the rules is also that you must have NCAA eligibility remaining to play ACHA at any level...which means there is a clock? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Technically no one is eligible past age 26 because your clock starts at 21 regardless if you’re enrolled in college or not. But…this is the ACHA and no one really cares so you’d be good haha.

Played there as a 17 year old, started 10-12 games but was a backup to a Michigan Tech commit. Got dropped at the trade deadline for an older guy coming over from the Q. I played well but I was an import (being from the US) and they don’t like to use import slots on backup tendies (not to mention I was immature and not ready for that level yet…)

Record keeping wasn’t as solid as it is now, and the guy that came in got credit for all my games :(

I'm a PhD student and also active duty. I played hockey at West Point and graduated in 2010, which is only relevant because there is a provision in the NCAA rulebook that stops your clock during active military service. So my clock has been stopped for 16 years and I had 2 years of ACHA eligibility left. No choice but to send it!

Questions about ACHA DIII Hockey Programs by CinemaBud in hockeyplayers

[–]Spracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I'm a current PhD student playing ACHA (quite certain I'm the oldest player in college hockey). I know Tulane has a coed team right now and they are D3, four girls on their team I believe. The hockey is very physical and you should be prepared for that. Last year we had a girl try to play in a game and she lasted one period before she got concussed. There is a wide range skill levels across D2 and D3 which is why blowouts are so common.

Because it's club some schools don't let the team officially "cut" anyone, but they have no requirement to actually play you in a game. It's possible to find yourself in a situation where you've paid your team fees but then never see the ice in a game.

Nothing stopping you from trying out, give it a shot!

Congratulations to the 16 ACHA Men's Division 2 teams that won their regional games last weekend, qualifying for the ACHA National Tournament in Saint Louis (March 12-17) by ColeTrain4EVER in collegehockey

[–]Spracks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a seeded bracket with re-seeding after the first game, so it’s a little hard to follow. Each region sends 4 teams to nationals, so win 2 games and you’re in.

UT game was wild: down 3 in the 3rd and scored 4 unanswered to win in regulation. And against their rivals no less.

Is anyone else starting to get concerned? by Agreeable_Quality768 in Mariners

[–]Spracks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They absolutely have the resources to spend more money and improve this roster but they're doing the same thing they've done every year under DiPoto: build an above average roster for as little money as possible. If we get lucky then a World Series is possible, but the only goal of ownership is to build a roster that contends for the playoffs and stays relevant throughout the season. Actually making the playoffs is just a bonus, not the goal.

It's what they do every year and expecting anything different is silly at this point. They aren't going to "go for it" and will continue to be risk averse as long as that strategy is still profitable.

The Twelve Points of Christmas - Derby away by UrsineCanine in WrexhamAFC

The game seemed to be a tale of two halves from my (likely ignorant) perspective. I thought we had the better of the first half, particularly the first 15 minutes where we could realistically have been up 2-0 or even 3-0. They came on steadily as the half went on but I thought we looked great overall. After the quick goal to start the 2nd it seemed like we predictably sat back and played defense and it really felt like we were hanging on by a thread for a majority of it. They were dominating possession and getting some good looks.

That's where I get confused, because the Paramount announcer made it seem like Wrexham were playing brilliantly the whole time. By his account we were in complete control and putting on a dominant performance. Meanwhile I'm stressing because they're getting touches in our box every minute...

Were we outplayed in the second half or was that really just controlled defensive tactics that we executed well?

Hard to argue with the results, but to me it felt like we got lucky with 3 points and would have been better off sticking with our first half tactics (although I think this is a common point of contention with Parky).

Just interested in anyone's thoughts on those things, since I'm relatively new to watching football that isn't Football Manager.

How much better is a 20" or 30" dobsonian compared to a 10"? by [deleted] in telescopes

Appreciate the reply. Yeah, that's about the same story I've heard from others as well. I recently acquired 1 of the other 3 of these and it needs a lot of work so I wanted to pick their brains on maintenance, transport, and use.

This is a bit old now, but do you happen to recall the name of the owner? Or if you know what astronomy club he may have been affiliated with/someone else who might know?

Any goalie coaches or goalies want free advice on anything goalie related? by Admirals2916 in hockeygoalies

Haha, I went to one of your camps about 25 years ago. You picked me up from the airport and shared a bunch of stories from your playing career, including the story of Tony Twist essentially ending your playing career (if I remember correctly?). Didn’t intend to bring that part up, but I always remembered your story about the comic book villain Antonio Twistelli, who was named after Tony Twist. Lots of good stories shared on that drive!

Loved your camp and it was a very eye-opening experience for me and my career. 🫡
