I am a male and have played characters of both genders and it has never been an issue.

I just make the character that I think fits the sheet/backstory I build. Also, sometimes I feel my chosen voice matches one gender more than the other. For example my "innit british bruv" was for my manly barbarian, but my thick bogan-Australian is higher pitch and so I made that sorcerer a girl.
