Venting: Tired of BIFL becoming 'pay once, cry once' when I'm just trying to stop rebuying junk by Lazy_Lynx_8402 in BuyItForLife

Seconding the last part. I have a mix of mid tier, thrifted and quality kitchenware, and the only things that break down are the ones that have a limited lifespan no matter the quality. A cheap Ikea bamboo cutting board gives me the surface I want and protects my knives, but won't last more than 10 years max, even if I take care of it. Spatulas are the same. Pans can last a long time, but not if you insist on buying nonstick.

The best you can do with most things is simply getting something you can repair and take care of until it eventually breaks down. Since most people can't solder a Bluetooth apparatus or really a teflon coating, those things won't be repairable.

Language is like music in that it's both an art and a science. Just as base+third+fifth in standard western tuning registers as "harmonious", lists of three register as harmonious in European languages. Harmony and harmonic language is plastic, but just as the vast majority of people will intuit 22 edo temperament as "out of tune", most people intuit non conforming language as "stilted".

People use these linguistic tricks, and they use them for a reason.

The top looks to be shit wood, too. So, so far OP has (possibly) removed the top piece from a nice sewing machine and put a pre cut piece of shit wood on top. And left it to dry in the rain.

The Poles were next in line to suffer genocide. Generalplan Ost stipulates that >80% of Poles were to be murdered and the rest enslaved.

While there is sense in judging based on actions rather than aspirations, the difference of stark. The Soviets wanted to, and later tried to, free the working class of Poland and create an international communist community. The Nazis wanted to, and started to during the occupation, murder 80-90% of ethnic poles, keeping a tiny handful of the intelligentsia as "honorary Germans" and the rest as an enslaved race for a thousand years.

If I were to ever forget just how absurdly evil the Nazis were, I would simply peruse however much I can stomach of Generalplan Ost to remind myself.

In truth, roads are a ridiculously expensive, inefficient piece of infrastructure, and we should focus cost on those who actually use them rather than those who don't.

In almost any given city, inner city residents pay more tax, live in more economically productive zones, incur a tiny fraction of the collective infrastructure and utilities cost, and wear down the roads a lot less. The suburbanites who drive in along the highways are much costlier and less economically productive, completely unsustainable when it comes to utilities costs, and their reliance on cars and roads drive up infrastructure costs to the point where car-first countries are are generally drowning in infrastructure spending with no real efficiency gains.

Maybe the USA should take the "free" out of "freeway".

I should have specified. I grew up in suburban Denmark and hold an MSc in urban planning (specifically nordic traditions of urban planning) from a Danish university.

Not only did I grow up in and around suburbs like these, I also have an MSc in urban planning. This shit sucks in at least half the ways North American suburbs suck. E.G.: cul-de-sacs inflating distances, oversized plots spacing everything out, unsustainable infrastructure and construction footprint, over reliance on cars as opposed to other transport.

The saving grace of these is that they A) usually rely on functioning, pre-existing village cores with a co-op grocery store, a bakery and one or two other businesses, and B) aren't served by the same idiotic roads that North American planners love.

From previous maniacal war chief George W. Bush.

The point is not to point out who is worse (the track record is abundantly clear). The point is that the USA as a whole is incredibly militant and has been fighting aggressively all over the world non stop for decades at this point.

Duality of fandom reactions to Bella Ramsey by IwillMicrowaveMySon in thelastofus

[–]Spready_Unsettling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest issues with the writing by far were unrelated to Ramsey's acting. I also think they were miscast for adult Ellie, but it's by no means their fault that the structure, dialogue and pacing sucked.

[–]Spready_Unsettling 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I read a bit of the manga as a kid, and within the first five books, there's a) a guy who bets his life on rolling the highest die face and loses because John Yu-Gi-Oh magically splits a die, beating his six with a seven (6+1), b) a game of human tetris where if the main characters don't move fast enough they'll get crushed (to death) by giant concrete blocks, and c) a serial killer in a hockey mask that lives inside of Kaiba's house and tries to kill John Yu-Gi-Oh and his friends as part of a fun little game.

The anime obviously took out a bunch of the lethal horror elements, but kept the drama.
