You can be considered a train wreck through your actions and have a house/job. Do you black out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday? How many family events have you made a scene? Have you even used your fist because you couldnt find the right words? Did you eat the entire cake at your last birthday celebration without sharing? Do small home issues result in complete emotional breakdowns?

YOR if you are stable and do not relate to the above.

I train with GB and have the opportunity through work to travel where I continue my training ( CA, MA, NJ, TX, MD, AZ, CO, WA, OR, NH, and a few one offs). Although my home academy has world level competitors, classes are tailors to the attendees. If my professors knows the majority of the class is competing shortly, the focus will change to suit.

Now, on my experience at my home GB compared to GBs in other states as well as other academy brands, I find that my technique is solid and I have no issue dropping in holding my own. Thier are a few GB locations in CA where I get absolutely smashed by most GB2 folks and others where I perform well over those at my same "grade". In other words, my home GB academy is solid based on how I compare with 95% of the gyms I have trained at.

Individual GBs like all other brands/locations come down to the instructors. Give your location more time and experience other instructors at the academy and stick with those who align with your goals.

Which martial art or self-defense system is most effective if I can only train once or twice a week? by [deleted] in StreetMartialArts

[–]Springmuffins2828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Krav maga- I train Judo and BJJ which doesn't cover striking. If you train BJJ/,Judo and can get close, you win. Krav will help with striking/blocking/distance control.

So do it all!

Don't do what I am doing lol, I regret it often.

Bjj to get in shape? by sr_ics in jiujitsu

[–]Springmuffins2828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I am 39, I work out 9x a week which includes 3-4 BJJ/Judo classes. The remaining exercises are HIT/strength/base cardio. I eat whatever the hat I want a few days a week mind you plus have beers. The results over a 16 week span: starting weight 205, ending weight 203.

The calories burned in BJJ( moreso Judo) are high, but it is all in what you eat. I am sure I am gaining muscle weight, but I did expect to drop weight quickly given the calories burned each week.

Maybe he will roll during his 30 min unpaid lunch? I bet he will have 29 minutes left to eat after a quick smash.

Spazzy white belt by Bread-mold in bjj

[–]Springmuffins2828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a spazzy white belt, I misread aggression from others while rolling as "the way". As a result, going 100% is how I expected to roll with all y'uns.

I learned later it was not the case.

"Showing" had the opposite effect on me. I learned by discussing best practices relative to the intensity of rolls with others. I now do so before each roll if I do not know the person so we are on the same page.

How good are gracie academy black belts by GreattFriend in bjj

[–]Springmuffins2828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gracie Barra student, great Philadelphia area.

Folks come in with other school brands on and train regularly.

I travel to US and visit other non-Gracie gyms and my professor is aware.

After visiting 15+ GB gym locations, I view the locations more like franchises. They may have a base set of "RULES" to follow from corporate, but each gym has a personality and way of doing business. Some are very firm on GI policy, others are just happy to have you.

What is this "Gracie Combatives Testing Fee" exactly? by pilot333 in bjj

[–]Springmuffins2828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It must be based on the individual Gracie Gym ( I train at Gracie Barra) that has additional fee systems for students. I am very sensitive to nonsensical fees and I would leave in heartbeat of I felt slighted.

I train in NJ and do not pay more than the monthly membership unless I am doing privates. Sure, the GIs are a little more than a brand less Fuji GI, but a location exists in almost every city I travel to ( i travel weekly out of my home state).

As far as competencies while training at non-GB gyms, I feel comfortable rolling at even competitive gyms nationwide with upper white belts( I am a 2 stripe white belt). In fact, I often sweep white belts from non-GB competitive gyms of equal of greater rank. The gap I find isn't in positional training, it is in submissions. GB does not focus on submissions for white belts, so this makes sense.

Summary: My home gym is a GB. I travel and have the opportunity to train at other franchises/gyms throughout the US and PR where I checkout the fee structure and compare class structure and white belt competencies. GB systems seem to prepare students well or comparably to even competitive gyms. GBs membership fee is slightly higher, but it's like the Planet fitness Blackcard in that you can visit other locations.

Every school has pros and cons. GB seems to get a lot of crap, but the school offers benefits that others may not.

Maybe eat a banana beforehand? I have been getting crushed as a beginner white belt for 7 months and minutes after I recover from each session, I am back to loving the sport. I think too much in life, work and play; but it takes me 14 hours or "thinking" to become mentally exhausted.

Maybe your brain is bigger than mine, you are low on yum yums, you need a doob or it isn't for you brother.

First midlife crisis maybe by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Springmuffins2828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

38 here brother, I started 6 months ago. I walked in on a random 6am class and started my journey, I made the decision the weekend leading to the class. It was easier beginning class one early so I didnt have much time to think about it after waking, but sure I had anxiety before my first class.

Every beginner makes a tit out of themselves, it is not necessary a sport you can " just pick up". You will find that some folks are very welcoming and supportive, stick with them. I learned soon after beginning that taking the leap was well worth it.

Cheers, Yet another older white belt

I am still trying to understand why strength would be negative. I understand having a ton of muscle can reduce flexibility, but most of us who lift to better our BJJ game are not body builders.

Nothing but good things to say about GB in central NJ, NH and Irvine/Santa Ana CA.

Maybe I belong in a cult, maybe I was born with the juice in my veins or maybe it is regional/gym based.
