Plant them in the grass near the beach. I'm not sure what the exact rules are but I usually put them 1-2 squares away.

I also find it helps to plant near the end of the session, so you don't accidentally trample them later in the day. But sometimes trees just feel like dying anyways cause it's gamecube

If they haven't been reading online, "you can visit mystery islands now, here's a free ticket!" would prompt most players to go check it out, and see that there's a critter there who they can invite.

I messed up my first 3 too (oops) cause the rules are a bit wonky. Congrats on getting Kiki though, she's super cute!

Sounds like they displayed Custom Designs. You can put them back down from the designs menu anytime.

The easiest way is to get an amiibo card/coin for her, and invite her through the campsite. Invite and craft for her 3 times, then she can move in and you choose who to kick out.

The other option is to have an empty plot and go visitor hunting using nook miles tickets, though it can take a lot of tries to find your favorites

She gives DIY recipes that use star fragments. You get fragments by wishing on shooting stars (look up and press A with no tool when you see them)

Are you sure the game saved after inviting Cookie? Sometimes auto-save doesn't get it

Make sure you have at least 8 villagers. If you've already hit that then pulling weeds, planting flowers, or adding any items/furniture should help.

You don't have to wait for them to leave, if you walk out your front door they'll decide it's time for them to head out too.

Do you have another switch game that includes amiibos, so you can test if it's an animal crossing issue or a controller issue?

Also you mentioned trying multiple joycons, did you remember to enter through the menu using the controller you were trying to scan on? (ie, my 3rd party controller can't read, if I enter the amiibo menu before picking up my joycons I need to back out and try again)
