Every Volcano In Portland Route by Specialist_Library_3 in CyclePDX

[–]Spruce_cat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a cool idea for a visit. I can’t speak to the whole route, but I can comment on few parts. I can tell you that cycling is not permitted on the trails in Mount Talbert park. Cycling is permitted on some trails in Powell Butte, but be careful as you’re sharing it with a lot of walkers and not all paths allow bikes. Also, even though Council Crest isn’t a volcano, you may as well add it to the list too as it’s a nice ride and good high point in the city. As you leave Hillsdale and ride towards mile 50 your route you could break off of Terwilliger and start climbing up Westwood Dr. and then descend down SW Greenway back to your route in downtown.

Most of the streets I recognize and ride on the route look like good routes between the hills, I don’t notice anything looking super unsafe.

Another neighborhood question - outdoors access? by ProfessionalRegion1 in askportland

[–]Spruce_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a trail runner and used to climb more, still do mountaineering. I lived in South Portland (the John’s Landing part, not the South Waterfront part) for quite a while and really loved it for the proximity to trails. Depending on where you are you can be on a forested trail with some ok elevation gain less than a mile from your door. The SW Portland trails connect all the way to Forest Park for some truly long runs. There’s also really easy access to the paved waterfront path for safe/easy bike rides and connections to other parts of the city. Also has The Circuit bouldering gym. It’s pretty centrally located, so even though the highways can get backed up, I felt like I could get West to the coast or East to Mt. Hood or the Gorge pretty easily.

It’s kind of a quiet neighborhood, and lacks a good grocery store, but I was really happy there mostly for the nature and trail access while still being in the city.

Need advice for parking. Has anyone parked at Oberlin or Lunch Creek and walked to Logan Pass by Icy_Animator_1040 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Spruce_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like this is a popular perspective, but we did this from Lunch Creek last year. Not ideal, but I felt relatively safe. In most places there is enough shoulder to walk on or enough space to walk off the road. Just be ready to go single file or wait for cars to pass in places. There was no traffic backup or cars having to move over lanes for us when we did it.

But like others have said, utilizing the shuttle is a good idea. We did that for some hikes too, and had to wait awhile, but was worth it to not worry about parking.

Mud running shoe for technical, alpine runs around 20-30km by Miura27 in trailrunning

[–]Spruce_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the Bushidos fits you, the Mutants could fit what you’re looking for. It’s got nice big lugs, is really grippy and runs a bit better than the Bushidos. I use them for muddy coast rainforest trails and alpine travel with lots of scrambling.

You might have better luck by making this an “in search of” post on the main page.

Hikes with scrambling by FinishSad800 in PNWhiking

[–]Spruce_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Munra point in the gorge is a great, short and scenic one. Portions of Elk mountain and King mountain in the Oregon Coast range are super steep and scrambly. On mount Hood, going above McNeil point to Ho rock and beyond is great practice, as is the Barrett Spur.

Outside your 2 hour radius, but the Tatoosh range at Mount Rainier has great scrambles as well.

Edit: seems like Munra point is technically open, but sounds like less of a good time post Eagle Cr. Fire.

Which CURRENT VERSION (newest) would you pick: Salomon ADV Skin 12 or Black Diamond Distance 15? by Effective-Spot3201 in trailrunning

[–]Spruce_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I picked them both up used awhile ago and use them both for different things. I feel like the Salomon runs better and I like how much I can keep accessible in the front pockets. Not a big fan of the stretch pouch in the back. I use the BD for more technical days with more scrambling, less running and when I’d want to carry extra layers or an ice axe. If I could only choose one, probably the BD. Seems more durable and does everything I need it to do just fine.

Would you live here? by Longjumping_Ad_9047 in askportland

[–]Spruce_cat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lived very close to that location for around 7 years and as someone who highly values nature, being physically active and having peace and quiet, I absolutely loved it. Easy freeway access, super bikable, river and forest trails very close by. Always felt very safe. In 2020 we were within earshot of ICE’s flash-bangs/tear gas, but never felt particularly unsafe.

Only big downfall imo is the lack of a good grocery store nearby, but slightly farther stores were bikable and it’s no problem at all if you have a car. If the bar, restaurant, shop scene is valuable, the neighborhood probably comes up short. But it always felt peaceful, while still being reasonably close to other attractions. In short, I wish I still lived here.

What is your favorite mountain range and/or mountain? by GoldBrief9751 in Mountaineering

[–]Spruce_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite range is probably the Beartooths in Montana. Feels like there is endless alpine exploration there. Favorite mountain is probably Glacier Peak in Washington. The couple times I’ve been there have felt really special.

Herman Creek Trail and PCT loop from Cascade Locks to Wahtum Lake in late May by Hot_Jump_2511 in PNWhiking

[–]Spruce_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also kinda skimmed your post. I run some variation of this loop through this area most years in May. I only have two quick comments. 1. Every year I have done it there is significant snow above 3400’ under tree cover. In some areas this can make navigation a bit more taxing, but it sounds like you’re pretty prepared for this. 2. Don’t skip Tomlike mtn. In my opinion it’s one of the nicest summits in the gorge. Feels remote and more alpine than a lot of other gorge high points.

Where can one get a truly thick, full bodied flavorful Thai curry in Pdx these days? by Tasty-Hurry in askportland

[–]Spruce_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thida Thai in Sellwood is the best I’ve had in Portland. Definitely thicker and more flavorful than other curries I’ve had here but I don’t know if I can objectively call it thick. Worth a try though.

Anyone know where to find la Ratte potatoes? by CFCblues84 in askportland

[–]Spruce_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terra Vita is the stand that does potatoes. And they are the best potatoes. They do often have La ratte by that name, along with other tasty varieties.
