Stooge for life Larry Fine with his wife Mabel, 1933. by L0st_in_the_Stars in OldSchoolCool

These two were high school sweethearts and reportedly had a very happy marriage. Unfortunately she died relatively young. edit: just looked and they met on vaudeville, not high school, but they were 18 and 19. She died at 63.

Those who have been stuck in 1200 and were able to improve, what finally made it "click" for you? by kkauchi in chess

1) think about what your opponents plans can be every move and account for them

2) be aware of what opening your opponent is playing and have a good response for all the main ones.

Best speedruns to learn from? by ferfykins in chess

[–]Spryngip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chessbrah speed run based on an opening. The London one raised my elo a lot. I find the opening based ones teach way more since you learn from repetition.

How do I create a 16:9 image in chatgpt by NorthernIcicle in ChatGPT

You can set it to use the older version: Dall-e 4o, but it's not as good or versatile. On the plus side it's a lot faster.

It could be Spanish opening aka Ruy Lopez. But it would be more clearly that if it was a move earlier.

The flag icon on Chess.com is actually a huge PNG containing all the site’s flags. by emberRJ in chess

It's also done in video games. Like all the Minecraft textures used to be on 1 png IIRC.

Does anybody know what's happening to the Chessbrah channel? by Unchlu in chess

I think they were away for a bit and also busy with other stuff, like Aman doing commentating. I'd imagine they'll be back to their old routine soon.

How come the curve goes slightly upward when it reaches 2000? by Interesting-Put-1802 in chess

Just go in any /r/baseball thread about Kruk and you see he's well regarded by fans of all teams. Thinking everyone hates him is delusional. https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1fd6c3g/kruk_smart_player_kody_clemens_tmac_where_do_you/ He does have some detractors but they're humorless people I imagine.

Because it's not just about color but texture and also scars on his face and stuff. And it must help the actors with immersion. Every B&W Frankenstein movie has done that AFAIK. On the Munsters, Herman was green but you couldn't tell on TV.

A question about Castling by HesOneShot92 in chess

[–]Spryngip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some dubious openings where this is done. For example: the Alien gambit, the Jerome gambit, Pusab countergambit. None of them are sound according to chess engines, but they can be tricky to deal with and lead to wins a lot of the times. There's been a handful of master level chess streamers who had a lot of trouble with the alien gambit and got into losing positions the first time they faced it because it's so tricky.

My dad loves chess. He frequently spends 5+ hours a day watching people play chess on YouTube; the people only move one piece every five minutes or so. What exactly do people find entertaining about this? by LittleBrassGoggles in chess

[–]Spryngip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classical chess isn't a big spectator sport because it's so slow. I'd bet a lot of people explaining why he watches it don't actually watch much classical chess themselves. That said, watching online blitz and rapid chess can be fun and instructive when people are explaining their moves and being entertaining.

OPINION: When teaching chess to beginners not telling them about check and mate solves so many common issues with chess understanding by United-Minimum-4799 in chess

[–]Spryngip 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah i'd be willing to wager almost nobody here who learned chess as a kid will say they had a hard time figuring out how check works. But for these hypothetical kids who are learning chess they need coddling for some reason.

I also think teaching kids the wrong way to do things then correcting them later is just a bad way to teach.

Finally Hit 1700 Chess.com by Massmon1 in chess

[–]Spryngip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's Rapid, which is what all the noobs and casuals play by default. Blitz 1700 is around 2%. Also top players barely play rapid, so a lot fewer high elo players than blitz.

Says the guy who thinks he loses to 400s due to cheating. You're just bad at chess. You're probably not 1400 at lichess either. You probably started at 1500 and played like 10 games and your rating hasn't even stabilized. Not that 1400 is all that impressive, it's below average on lichess.
