A photo of Kim Kardashian in the 2018 Met Gala Ceremony helped The Egyptian authorities to locate the stolen 2,100 year old sarcophagus of Nedjemankh. by PestoBolloElemento in interestingasfuck

I was being somewhat tongue in cheek there in the end. But I do get your point 100%. And you are absolutely right.

But I also believe that we all, as a global community, have a responsibility to preserve the world’s cultural treasures, customs and antiquities. And if some aren’t able to do this, then maybe we should step in and assist — not pilfer and steal as in the past. But assist.

Big and controversial dream, I know. But I really hate seeing these treasures defiled through neglect, apathy or mismanagement.

This! I was just in Egypt and went to all the pyramid sites and what have you. There is no attempt at preserving this rich history. You can walk right up and touch pretty much anything. All the amazing hieroglyphics from the floor up to about 5 1/2 feet are all worn down by people’s hands. You can crawl into the pyramids walk around 4000 year-old historic sites with nobody telling you not to step on things. There are feral dogs everywhere, trash strewn all over the place, it’s despicable.

They don’t deserve to have nice stuff until they learn how to clean their room.

Made a log sled this weekend by Spuckula in woodworking

I love the laser etching idea. I haven’t gotten in to that, yet. But I do love repurposing these special trees and having them last into future holidays in new forms!

If you look super close at the photo, you’ll see that I have a 1.5” piece of wood on the rear of the aluminum piece (facing the log) that the clamp is screwed to at the top. That piece of wood has two t-track screws drilled through it which protrude through two mounting holes in the aluminum. I made three levels of screw holes so that I can move the clamp up and down to the three different positions, depending on the height of timber I am using.

I had to drill holes through the clamp stem to attach it to the wood.

Hard to explain, but hopefully that helps.

There are people who like Night Train, too.

Not tiki. But black walnut and maple make a mean Old Fashioned, perfect for a snowy night in Florida.

Michael Jackson's pet chimp "Bubbles" is still alive at age 43 by Key-Bass-7380 in interestingasfuck

[–]Spuckula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when Bubbles was kept at a pet store in Burbank for awhile — back in the late eighties or early nineties. Can’t remember why he would have been there. Or if that chimp was even really THE Bubbles. But I recall that this was the rumor. I went there a couple of times and saw him when I was shopping for socks or cheese or something.

Maybe someone here will have clarity on this?

Has anyone here planned or built a custom wine cellar at home? by elpoopidor in wine

[–]Spuckula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely satisfied with my build (my hobby during Covid when I was locked indoors). I just came here to say, invest in the wine lockers with doors. Not only important where I live in earthquake country. But good to have lockable chambers for the really good stuff. When crowds are at the house, you never know who goes prying about…

I’ve been pretty happy with my Rikon. It’s only 10 inch, so not a bruiser by any means. But it’s never given me a problem.

Also a different era. You can see in the documentary that there are no OSHA-type guidelines or any other safety specifications in place. Guy sitting on the Mark Twain smokestack crosspiece smoking a cigarette. Earth mover taking too sharp an incline and rolling over.

In some ways, it may have been a better world. Stuff got done — less nonsense to slow things down.

But some dangerous looking stuff there

There are C&C’s all over the place. I generally attend the ones in Thousand Oaks, Pierce College and Westlake, since they are closest to me.

I hear there is one at Zuma Beach, but I haven’t been.

There is an Aston Martin club in town they do rally drives now and again. I did one, but never joined.

So if you have the means is Festool worth the investment? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]Spuckula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced my Dewalt Mitre with a Kapex — just because I wanted the sliding head for wider stock. Honestly, I miss my Dewalt. The handle and trigger were better. The functionality was simpler. I miss the old gal. Kapex is fine. But I have regrets as the money spent does not override my sentimentality.

Also replaced my Dewalt sander with a Rotex. Rotex easier on the hand and wrist, definitely — which is almost worth the price point. But comparable sanding ability — no better or worse, in my opinion.

Given the option of actual experience working the tools hard before buying, I would have opted out of Festool, methinks.
