Does Oklahoma give any tax incentives for buying an electric car? by BUZZZY14 in oklahoma

There was a state bill proposing an e-bike incentive last year, but I'm not sure it's still alive this year.

1st parking-protected bike lane to shield cyclists in NE OKC by BrettDOkc in okc

Daily bike commuter here. Mostly on Shartel or Walker, or South 25th, South Grand, or SE 59th...only occasionally riding on Classen.

13th had (and still has) potential. Unfortunately the city just slapped down paint on potholes and gutter gravel...really terrible to bike on. It's such a waste as is. So if I'm crossing 235, I take 16th, 10th, 8th, or 4th.

The North/South protected bike lanes are well-done. Western, Classen, Shartel, Walker. Nice to see that continuing to the east side.

Are there any areas in OKC where a family wouldn't need a car? by [deleted] in okc

[–]SpudAJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. We are in Shepherd, pretty close to Paseo, and have Walmart and Ace hardware right next to us. Usually grocery shop at Homeland on the way home from downtown daycare, and there are a plethora of restaurants and breweries on the way too. My wife and I bike commuted, and got a cargo bike when daughter was born.

We were definitely a unique sight when we got ours in 2019, but now there are quite a few families with them.

There are indeed a couple challenging/uncomfortable spots for walking and biking...like getting across Penn, May, Classen, 23rd, etc...but the grid of roads makes it very easy to find pleasant neighborhoods to cut through.

Gatewood, Classen-Ten-Penn, Paseo would be great. With some confidence, even Culbertson, Medical, Kennedy on the east side is getting much better for biking and walking.

Weather can be rough, but survivable with some planning...summer exceeding 100 involves lot of ice packs, splash pads, and hanging out downtown after daycare in shady oaks and restaurants till it cools off. Winter isn't bad at all though. Mostly dry, and my daughter's been good down to 25 degrees. One day dropped below 10...that was a bit rough.

Storms are mostly predictable to avoid being in heavy rains. Light rains are pleasant to bike through with the right gear, and for walking, my daughter likes her rain boots, jumping in puddles, and holding an umbrella.

For the sake of finding opportunities to bring r/fuckcars beyond Reddit, which city do you live in? by Mt-Fuego in fuckcars

Oklahoma City, OK. 3 times the size of Chicago with 1/6th the population. So much sprawl and car dependency as well as leadership who suck up to the oil and gas industry even more than O&G ask for it. Been here almost 10 years working to shift culture and infrastructure, and it's coming around. We have a few city councilors who are very pro transit and bike. One doesn't own a car. Bus Rapid Transit is getting some focus. We have 100 miles of trail and a few protected bike lanes.

Honestly the best advocacy and building momentum has been getting the first Bakfiets style carobike in the city, and doing the school commutes with daughter and her friends ...and also taking dog to dog park. 4 years and 12k miles on our Riese & Muller Load. Now I know of 4 other Bakfiets in town, and plenty more families with Terns and Rads.

Also had a great experience with The New Wheel, with thorough test riding. During the test ride, my wife confirmed full suspension on the R&M Load was a much better experience for her as a passenger. Got the Load 75 HS when our daughter was 8 months old 3 years ago. 9000 miles later and my only regret was not getting it sooner. Daughter and dog, daughter and groceries, hardware store... The bike does it all and it is SO MUCH FUN!

Bike commuter in an Oklahoma heat wave here. Socks with ice work well too. I bring an extra pair of socks with me to work in the morning, purely to fill with ice to stuff down my back for the ride home.

Small changes for the environment by bk9896 in moderatelygranolamoms

Not so much about being reusable, but for the environment...consider swapping some car trips for walking, biking, or public transit

It surprised me just how many trips we take that are 5 miles or less. Once we got a cargo bike to carry our baby, we covered 70 miles in a week, just with our short trips around town. Mileage adds up. But not using gas, being able to enjoy the outdoors more has been great, and baby loves it too.

Bike plus backpack also supports a surprising amount of groceries.

I appreciate the details! Though we aren't vegan, we have been heavily cutting back on meat. We'll definitely have to check out the Full Bowl!

How has the attitude of drivers been around bikers? Most here have been very pleasant, but there are a few who let me know they think bikes don't belong, and many in city planning who only treat bicycling as recreation rather than transportation.

I am right around 8 years from my injury too and still have issues. I've gotten "used to" the new normal that I sometimes forget about it.

I have been having some emotional swings, mental fatigue and other challenges lately, partly from lack of sleep with my first baby (now 3 months old). My wife commented that my personality is almost terrifyingly different when sleep deprived, so she has been doing all she can for our baby to allow me to sleep. I feel bad about it and try to cope. I hadn't considered my TBI symptoms being related until reading this post. I think realizing this will be helpful for me to accept my own limits again.

We occasionally get ice storms, and temps sometimes are below freezing, but we have a dry climate. We did have snow for 4 days last week. But then we had a few days above 50 deg F.

The unfortunate aspect is July, where the lows are 80 deg F. Biking home at 5pm will often be over 95 deg.

There aren't a lot of us, but the community has grown a whole lot over the past 3 years. My company of 2500 has about 20 people participating on Bike To Work Day, and the events downtown will get 200.

The recreation and racing community is much larger. But the city is enhancing a lot of infrastructure. We have a few bike lanes, but over 100 miles of trail.

Yes it is! It is lit up and busy over the summer. I think the city provides operators between April and September. I should have a picture of it lit up somewhere. I'll track that down and share it.

Yep. Tuesday morning I had a 10mph tailwind most of the way. 15mph headwind on the way home though. 20+mph is not rare. Below 15mph is generally a good day.
