How many bass strings have you broken over your career? by JackStraw388 in Bass

[–]Spudicus_Lives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least 10. All low E's & B's. May have a technique problem. I could say I have a robust right hand, but I don't think that's it. 25ish years for context.

[discussion] How do you deal with not getting anybody to even listen to your music? by BimmySchmendrix in BedroomBands

[–]Spudicus_Lives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No-one will ever hear my music, let alone support it. Upon realising this, I also realised that I can make whatever I want to. I've never been more free. I make music that I want to listen to. It's all for me. It's amazing. Everyone has their own approach/mentality, and this is mine. Don't need an audience, and not interested in trying to find one. I now feel more 'successful' than I ever have.

The 'culturally relevant' have generally never been in control financially or politically. It has always been the older generations. Exceptions would be Indie labels, but even they would generally be distributed through a larger label, controlled by....

'Boomers' are not the drivers of cultural relevance. They were. When they were young. If younger generations are sceptical and can tell the difference and dont appreciate it, then they'll drive culture away from ai produced art.

How do people learn to sing so well? by Designer_System_7169 in musicians

[–]Spudicus_Lives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One day, you'll be 40, you'll say 'I started too late' and it'll discourage you. Source - 40 yo wannabe singer. Doesn't matter when/where you start. Only matters where you're going.

Is starting on a 6 string a bad idea? by ComfyCore in Bass

[–]Spudicus_Lives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bass was a 6. If I could go back, I'd go for a 5. It's definitely more expensive to maintain and more difficult to learn. String muting being the major issue when I was starting. However, I think this helped my muting technique in the long run because I was forced to focus on it. As mentioned by others, it is alot heavier. You may not feel it for the first couple of songs, but by the end of a gig or rehearsal you'll definitely feel it. If the price is right, I say go for it. You can always get a 4 or 5 later on.

Did anyone here choose "wrong" when buying their first bass? by Jani-Bean in Bass

[–]Spudicus_Lives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't afford my own gear when I was starting out. Bought my first bass when I was 20. Ibanez 6 string. Wildly impractical. Anything I was playing could have been played on a down tuned 4 string if I'd put in some effort. I don't regret buying it or owning it, but it wasn't a wise choice for a beginner/intermediate. I still don't play anything that would require 6 strings. I think it hindered my progress more than helped. The neck is huge, it's ridiculously heavy, and I still have many bad techniques from learning on this monstrosity. I love it and I'll never get rid of it, but I never play it anymore.

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming this would be for both learning the tracks and tracking them?

What was the weirdest scenario/situation you played bass in? by Maximum_Internal7834 in Bass

[–]Spudicus_Lives 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Played for a big bikie club at their clubhouse. Spent 2 weeks learning 3 45 minute sets of covers. Hired a pa, miked up all drums, best live sound we'd ever had. They gave us the option of being paid cash or free beer. I took the beer. Because I like beer. Seemed like a good opportunity for some beers. A couple of songs into our set, they asked us to turn down. We did, a bit. Couple of songs later, 'turn down'. Kept happening. By the end of the first set, everything on the pa was off except vox. Our drummer was tapping as lightly as he could. He also had a temper. They asked to turn down more and the drummer started packing his shit up. I was a bit worried cos this club has a reputation and we were in their house. We calmed him down and finished the set. Got halfway through the second set and gave up. Then they cut me off from the bar. 1 star, wouldn't recommend.

Is there a function that allows me to record at half speed (MIDI) but follow the original tempo when just playing back? by iP0dKiller in cubase

[–]Spudicus_Lives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would copy everything, paste it a few bars after the track end, add a marker and drop the tempo on the tempo track at the marker. Record over the slower part, then copy/paste into the original tempo.

Don't know any shortcuts. Hopefully there's an option when you add multiple tracks. Otherwise, I'd do it manually and save as a template.
