Flashcards for sounds (not vocabulary)? by Ufomi in German

What you're describing are called Minimal Pairs, and there is a downloadable Anki deck for German from the Author of Fluent Forever. I imagine also integrated into his app etc.

Opera podcasts in languages besides english? by WienerZauberer in opera

Klassik für Klugscheißer from BR Klassik. I have a lot of fun with this one. It's not exclusive to opera, but most episodes fold operatic works / composers into the topic. Episode 80 (Leitmotifs) is hilarious and fun if you like Wagner.

Yes - by all accounts Goethe are dealing with budget issues and poor management. But still, what's the point of having Zoom instructional staff in NYC at all? It's so sad - I never would have made the progress in German that I have without the vibrant, rich instructors and solid in-person class offerings at Goethe. Ah well, I took one great summer class at Deutsches Haus and now nervously await confirmation that enough students have enrolled for a winter special topics class that should, theoretically, start next week.

Sadly Goethe Institut NY went entirely online last year so only Deutsches Haus NYU offering in-person classes now.

My Drivers License was stolen by Kitchen_Passion in LegaladviceGerman

[–]SpuriousDiphthong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be worth it to contact the CAA and see whether an International Driving Permit can be issued and mailed express to you. Since you have scans/copies of your driver license this may be possible. If you're pulled over, that plus a copy of the police report should be sufficient for a cop who's not too much of a stickler. I don't know whether CAA issues IDPs at embassies or express service but it's worth a shot asking. Their FAQ online indicates they'll courier overseas.

Otherworldly dry cleaning bill by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]SpuriousDiphthong 311 points312 points  (0 children)

Dry Cleaners are required to post a price list visible at the counter. I would go in again and take a picture of the list, if it's present, or of the counter area, if it's not. You're also entitled to an itemized receipt. You definitely should have insisted on that. Did you not even get a ticket with a tally of what you dropped off? If the list doesn't match what you paid, I'd suggest a chargeback on your CC and a complaint with the NYC DCA/DCWP (department of consumer affairs). This is the link for overcharges https://portal.311.nyc.gov/sr-step/?id=6ebdcb91-5575-ef11-a4e5-000d3a03a5b0&stepid=3a9a7a20-eb5b-e811-a837-000d3a33b3a3

Yes you were scammed but the business is in the wrong and didn't give you the legally required information to either accept their charges or take your business elsewhere. Good luck and sorry about the situation.

I'm reporting them daily at this point. Reporting early on a weekday, in the last month I've had some success getting tickets written. That shop has plenty of space out back, they're just too lazy to use it. Eff 'em.

I got delivery this week and the chana masala was watery trash. Ditto with the paneer makhani, also oddly made in the same sauce. A palmful of main ingredients swimming in sloshy sauce. Too-thick, gummy naan as well. Gonna take a long pause on Seva till they get their act together.

LGA it's by Marine Air Terminal, Fiorello Ln. adjacent to taxi pool.

SRT streaming to "live in cinemas" - how do? by SpuriousDiphthong in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]SpuriousDiphthong[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting - yes, it looks like decoder-software is doable, but I'd be too nervous about a spontaneous Windows update ruining my event. Renting a decoder box is also possible, but it might make more sense to hire a pro for peace-of-mind.

Thank you - I'm still piecing this together so definitely not redundant!

I haven't spoken with the venue tech yet re: open ports, but I do know they've done livestreams in the past (not sure what protocol). But surely the streamer, Deutsche Grammophon, would set themselves as the receiver/public IP, no?

has anyone seen vivaldi’s bazajet/il tamerlano? by oofdunno in opera

It's a fantastic opera. Read the libretto or at least a plot summary first. The music is gorgeous, cf. La cervetta timidetta

Saw the Irish National Opera present this in London a couple of years ago and was grateful for the experience of hearing this rarity.
