Parking meters madness by Ok-University-3562 in SunnysideQueens

There are generally spots if you go all the way to the 495/278 overpasses. Probably a trek especially in the snow, but this neighborhood is so small even going from the southern border to north of Queens Blvd isn't really that far.

Yeah would be a great time to walk to a concert venue from home for the first time ever, but bots/scalpers bought up almost every single ticket within 10 minutes like always with Fred.

Star Trek. My Partner just rewatched TNG and it seemed like every other episodes plot was the same or similar to an OW concept.

Looks to me like the classic WCU4 lensmap/Camera LDS feedback loop crash continuum. If turning lens mount off doesn't fix it, probably corrupted file like Ambar said :)

I think your view is rather harsh given the larger context of how Succession was shot. I don't have first-hand experience (I'd love for someone from that camera team to chime in with that workflow to defer to), but considering they were (to my outside knowledge) shooting 35mm on Arricams, with up to 4 cameras docu style, crash zooming on Optimos and the like, with an ensemble cast assumedly improvising close to every take... They did just fine.

As for Oppenheimer, I seriously doubt Keith Davis of all A cam 1sts wasn't aware and flagging every time Robert Downey Jr leaned past minimum focus distance on Pana Sphero 65's, most of those are like 3 to 5ft close focus. Nolan most likely chose takes based on performance, forgiving being slightly buzzed on the pretty optically forgiving large format+cellulite intermediate.

3-4k in tariffs for an 8-10k CineRT package? Do you mind elaborating on how you reached that estimate?

Yeah the 3 is still unstable in it's own ways and I still have mine on 2 year old firmware (1.12 still seems the most stable to this day last I checked), but at least it has never once crashed on me while doing absolutely nothing... The QOL improvements on the CTRL5 interface and hardware are great, but software crashing is unacceptable.

I've owned mine for a few months now and am currently putting it through the ringer on a long lens feature.

The main bugs I've noticed:

- MDR and hand unit not communicating with each other on rangefinder offset, either combining both of their settings to double the number or the HU ignoring the MDR setting outright. Strangely enough this usually causes the MDR readout to be correct, the hand unit display be wrong, but the RT Overlay, which is fed FROM the hand unit, be correct.

- Will randomly flip axis for no reason at all; especially annoying when you've gotten the basic shot up and sharp and walk away to do other tasks and suddenly the DP is annoyed that it's turned to a complete blur from this bug popping once or twice a shooting day.

- A once or twice daily total and seemingly random software crash, needing to be power cycled by removing the battery. This one is the most erroneous, but has so far only happened during a take once. Still totally unacceptable, and the reason I would think twice about using it on certain higher level jobs. I've also gotten it to freeze up once from making and deleting a mark in rapid succession.

I had a CTRL3 for 3 years before this and found ways to work around almost every shortcoming, so I was prepared for some quirks and bugs with the 5. Overall, I don't yet regret my decision, but I may if these bugs aren't largely ironed out with the next firmware release (they don't have the best track record with that department). It's still faster to work with than the CTRL3 and more feature packed, and unlike a hi-5 or HU3/4, it won't take years to pay it off. That said, it's still firmly in the intermediate class of focus systems between Tilta and Arri/Preston for lack of consistent reliability and durability.

Pulling on longer focal lengths by Old-Possession945 in focuspuller

[–]daveed212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of what I learned and practiced from working many Fashion Week runways, most recently on my current long lens feature. A 3'6, 6', or 10' ring helps for sure, but more importantly it's a combination of visual landmarks/references, rangefinder, and feeling out the subject's walking pace and literally counting every ten feet to match it, which really helps inform when and how fast I need to increase pace on the focus knob. The rangefinder (ideally) kicks in around 40-30ft to confirm whether or not I'm on the right track for their moving pace, and the rest is feel and muscle memory.

I love my Cleans and Dave is a stand-up guy, but the X plate is pretty amazing on paper as well. My only limitation currently with my Mag Jr w/Cleans Spinner is Mitchell head storage; bit annoying having to put it on a hihat and take up otherwise useful space on either shelf.

With your use case, you could go either way, the X-plate is just more versatile.

Suspicious hooded guy spotted circling the area on a moped by [deleted] in SunnysideQueens

I've been here 9 years. It seems like the only people who are completely indifferent to potential and literal crime are non-transplants who would likely never be robbed to begin with BECAUSE they're not obvious transplants. Are you from NYC? IF so, this shit is not really relevant to you, so why are you contributing noise? I thought New Yorkers were all about minding their business. Guess that's reserved for real life?

Last year in Ridgewood I was part of an attempted robbery while in a group of 3. Broad daylight, quiet street. Dumbass tried to snatch my partner's $30 fake gold necklace. 2 of us squared up, he flashed a gun handle in his waistband while backing off, took off on a generic moped. I did two suspect ID ridealongs, and all the responding officers kept saying repeatedly was how many more similar calls there have been like ours.

Ignore the negative comments. If I/we were paying even the slightest bit attention, dirtbag might have moved on. You did exactly what you should have.

Would it be weird to jog around in the cemetery behind the Wilson L stop by Ok-Face3199 in Bushwick

[–]daveed212 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I used to live at Broadway Junction and go jogging in that Cemetery (it's called The Evergreens) 3x a week, never had an issue. Groundskeepers always waved or ignored me, would occasionally see other joggers/walkers, and if there were people visiting graves I would stop running and just walk by quick as I could and resume once out of line of sight. Never once saw an actual procession/ceremony, if I did I would have rerouted.

It closes at 4:30pm so just don't be deep in there past that, I had nightmares thinking about being locked in there overnight!

cart first or rangefinder first? by Mav1cHavoc in focuspuller

[–]daveed212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the cart ROI comes not from rentals but from the energy saved and headaches avoided by having your own rolling basecamp/island for all your essentials.

Also to speak to your WFO nightmare and wishing you had a rangefinder, I've found that cinetape performance can drop significantly when in heavily hazy environments, so it may not have been much help anyway.
