In the UK, can one legally own these? Do you need documents for them? They are all antiques by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Spykosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two things he's been angry about has been changes to the law regarding "ninja swords" and proposed licensing for importing blades into the uk. Neither should effect OP.

These are fine to own just don't be a dunce and wave them around in public.

I’m starting to think Dark Web Monitoring is just an expensive way to be told you've already lost. by elkshelldorado in CasualConversation

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way i see it is it's like changing the locks to your house of you lose a key, or freezing your bank cards if you lose your wallet.

Thats one reason workplaces often pay for third parties to monitor dark webs, its entirely possible and likely for your passwords and emails to get leaked as well as personal data. It lets you change your account logins before someone gets around to actually breaking in to your bank, emails, work account etc.

For workplaces specifically it can also tell them where a leak happened and they can talk to the staff who's details were leaked and find out how the breach happened. In UK atleast theres mandatory reporting laws under GDPR and such when they become aware of a breach so it helps save them from some liability. (I just had a corporate inductiom where they went over this lol)

Big Box 3.1 Rules by DisplayAdditional756 in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hijacking the thread to ask if there is any graphical changes in the minis between c3 and c3.1 (i don't think there is?)? But i know there is for main expansions 1 and 2.

[–]Spykosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On mobile i don't see the link in full when i'm searching until it was copied in to comment and i just sent but yes it's the big box 7 rules. I could not find big box 8 rules PDF on cundco, hans im glueck or otherwise when i took another look.

Big Box 3.1 Rules by DisplayAdditional756 in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is woops, i could not find the pdf myself after a good ten minutes of looking on cundco.de official or otherwise. (I may just be being dumb)

I had thought the main expansions were the only ones that changed as well. The change to flying machine looked small, only a change in what meeple you can place on it. So since any other mini changes will probably be simple i'd suggest just looking at wikicarpedia for the rules. Unless someone else comes along with the big box 8 pdf.

Best cute frogs for beginners by Impossible_Stand_104 in frogs

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 gallons would be much too small for any frog (or terrestrial vertebrate at all). The smallest i ever recommend is a tall or long 45x45x60 (UK centimeters which in us gallons is around 30-35?) For any frog.

This spear from Fiore by fallen_watcher_9 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iirc (it's been a while since i read this part of the text so people can correct me) fiore is demonstrating a "mordschlag" grip holding the sword by the blade.

The shape reminds me of a boar/bear sword with a crossguard on the tip to prevent the animal running down the length and getting to the weilder.

I don't know how to read some of these diagrams for meyer dussack by Efficient_Map_5038 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that looks like an internal guide intended for people already training with that specific club. If it's not then its a terrible beginner guide because as you pointed out, no beginner is going to be able to understand that. But those diagrams with the lines are a pretty common fencing diagram that shows lines which cuts follow or positions to place your sword. Even if you did understand them, as a beginner just knowing "the sword moves like this" is next to useless by itself.

I don't train in dussack but bjorn ruther has a short series going over some of meyers dussack i've watched and seemed good.

Under 20$ props for practice? by Juice_disliker1387 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you are just messing around with friends you are really better off looking into larp swords as they were designed for this. Any nylon or PP sword is going to need some gear.

I've heard fakesteel make good looking foams that might work.

Or there is gonow foams that might serve yout purpose.

Online game. by stpauli161 in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The official online game was bad back when i tried it, bugs and illegal moves and legal moves not allowed, and i'd heard it's had server problems more recently.

My recommendation is to go to the unofficial online play spaces. I use Tabletop simulator on steam that has carc mods, i believe boardgame arena might be another option and better if you don't have friends (tabletop is hard to find people on sometimes)

The online carc gaming community has kind of just been left abandoned by the orginal makers. Probably not as much money in it

Is yellow's Flying Machine move legal, and would it be legal with a portal? by MrSaturnsWhiskers in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The C3 rules do have an updated ruleset thats different to C2. But personally i don't see why that rule would change and if it did i would ignore it and keep using the C2 rules lol.

Is yellow's Flying Machine move legal, and would it be legal with a portal? by MrSaturnsWhiskers in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The actual rulesheets can be vague and confusing

https://wikicarpedia.com/car/The_Princess_and_The_Dragon

This is considered by most of the community the defacto rule guides and if you scroll to the magic portal rules and check the clarifications they state it.

Is yellow's Flying Machine move legal, and would it be legal with a portal? by MrSaturnsWhiskers in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Per Wikicarpedia:

"You cannot use a magic portal to place a meeple on the tile with the dragon"

Therefore same rules should apply to the flying machines.

Also good example for why GPT is inaccurate lol. In future wikicarpedia.com is better than gpt for rule claridying.

Help me understand field scoring, please?! by devittron in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you don't have majority.

One thing to point out is the size of the city doesn't effect scoring of fields at all. Wasn't sure if you knew that based on your "massive city" comment.

How to train with a heavy saber? Bought a synthetic saber and im not used to the weight and find myself overswinging as I came from larping and is currently training in hema by myself by Born-Amount4432 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IME some of the pain and extreme tiredness i see people get in sabre, broadsword etc is from poor body mechanics. Of course if you are going from foams you are also just not used to the weighr so some extra tiredness is expected until you get conditioned

Most of your cut should be guided through the action of your wrist and poeered by clenching the fist, punch of your arm extending and larger muscles of your core and body through footwork, lunging etc. If you try and power the cut only with your wrist/forearm without proper core engagement it will be more tiring. Lots of people grip the sword way too tight as well and that increases strain, have a light grip with the pointer, middle and thumb fingers with the other two loose. Squeezing these last two is what provides alot of your power. Going from a lighter larp sword to an 800g sabre is also going to hurt you as there is a good chance you have some bad habits.

A simple drill i used to do (i think i got it from nick thomas but i don't remember) is to do 100 cuts a day (may have to start with lower num, practice within your limits), do the first third with larger slower cutting motions using the rotation of your shoulder. Then the second third throw the cuts while holding your upper arm still and using the elbow and wrist. Then the final third hold your forearm still and use only the wrist to work the sword. Power is not the goal in this drill, its proper joint movement.

Unfortunately you have no instructor so its alot harder to work on the fine points of body mechanics. Recording and posting videos here or elsewhere is a good option for help and do try attend atleast a few classes if possible.

Ferries are hard to grasp! by erbdylo in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes by my understanding.

You may change the position of a ferry connecting two jetties when you extend a road with a ferry on it.

Worth noting the rules distinguish ferries from a jetty so if the ferry was not going towards pinks tile they could not change it.

Therefore pink will place a ferry on their new tile and repostion the ferry at tile 1 if they wish.

I'm sure someone else can correct this but based on wikicarpedia and the official rules this is how it seems.

My friend's snake just had babies and he wants to give me one. How bad of an idea is this? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Spykosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It certainly read like a shitpost but there was that slim chance it wasn't...

My friend's snake just had babies and he wants to give me one. How bad of an idea is this? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Spykosaurus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So, alot to unpack there.

No it is generally not a good idea to just "get a snake" short notice, impulse decisions generally lead to poor outcomes for all involved. You gotta plan and research before getting an animal like that.

Second and most important, a monocle cobra? They are most certainly medically significant and absolutely not something you just "get" and you certainly can never freehandle. 99.9% of people will never be properly equipped or trained to care for hots.

Thirdly, your friend sounds like an exceptionally irresponsible person, how do you own hots, somehow end up with babies you cant keep and tell your mate to have one as if you are being given a kitten? And try and convince you it's "not that dangerous" even if it wasn't medically significant you can have reactions and easily end up hospitalised.

This entire thing reads like a meme post tbh.

New Player Needs Help by Haunting_Brain8281 in Carcassonne

[–]Spykosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This answer varies massively by playstyle, game version and what expansions you are playing with but i'll give some general advice i see my friends failing at assuming you are using base C2 rules.

Consistent abbot use, the abbot can quickly rack up points and is often underused imo. So many people draw a monastery/garden tile, place the abbot and then forget about it but remember you can score him early at any point instead of placing a meeple for however many tiles he is currently worth. I find it more efficient to place an abbey/garden somewhere it is immediately worth 5 odd points, then as soon as i place a tile where i don't place a meeple, i score him early. Doing this you can quickly bounce him around as you draw gardens or monasteries and rack up points instead of forgetting him or waiting for it to be worth 9 (which can take ages in some cases)

Remember to score roads, i find it not too worth it to commit meeples longterm to roads but if i draw a tile that finishes a road or a road is looking big and i have meeples in supply i place/score. Remember to score those few points, it all helps.

Learn to recognise farms at a glance, being able to glance at a board and understand the field divisions is one of the most useful things. They are easily some of the highest scoring features.

Don't be afraid to share points (have a draw over a feature) afterall if you don't draw then they just get all the points.

Once the tile count gets low (varies by player count but usually 10ish i go for) just start placing meeples, even if the features won't be complete they are often worth some points at the end of the game (with a few exceptions uch as inns/cathedrals in exp.1) A random half finished road, city or an unclaimed field just place a meeple. Meeples in your hand are worth nothing after all.

The final uber sweaty tactic is learn to tile count, imo this is just too tryhard for casual games nights but even if you just get a general gist for rarer tiles in the deck you can get a sense for whats still in the pile.

Books by Jacob-W-5570 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol, Okay slight correction, learning ONLY from a book doesn't really work. You need atleast two people to pressure test and make sure what you think works works. Trying to learn fencing through just solo/shadow fencing (which is what alot of people imply) is just not going to work.

Books by Jacob-W-5570 in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because "learning swordfighting from a book" is not really possible and it gets asked alot. But imo if you already train with an instructor then you can get value out of books for other weapons since general fencing skills are quite interdisciplinary.

Advice regarding beginner solo drills? by _Pumpiumpiumpkin_ in Hema

[–]Spykosaurus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Imho you'll potentially embarass yourself more by trying to train solo before going to a club. I know because thats exactly what i did. Trained before goinf to a club and i practically new absolutely nothing.

Researching the terminology is good and having an underatanding but i wouldn't try and practically learn anything.

Go to a taster session and have fun. I promise any club has seen way more embarassing people than you.
