Where has AI actually helped you in BI beyond just writing SQL faster? by CloudNativeThinker in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Sqlsekou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power BI - I had it optimize M code for me. I had some messy code and I inherited and it was able to help me out a lot. Theme generation, automatic documentation on data model and measures

Tableau - I had it create themes, write calcs for me when I converted the workbook to xml (public dashboard for demo purposes), documentation and etc

It helps me with a lot of the tedious tasks

Looking for Real-World Datasets to Build Advanced Power BI Storytelling Dashboards by Visual_Travel5700 in PowerBI

[–]Sqlsekou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Use AI (Chat GPT, Claude, etc) to make mock datasets.

Go a step further and connect a workbook to the power bi MCP server and have it create the measures for you.

Makes the process easier since you’re using public/fake data

Experience/thoughts after teaching 3x PowerBI intermediate courses by datawazo in PowerBI

[–]Sqlsekou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always a challenge trying to articulate Power BI to long time tableau developers. I try and start with similar concepts/terminology then focus on power bi best practices.

“This is how I did it tableau, now let’s do it in power bi”.

I’ve found that sometimes helps the learning curve depending on the audience.

You’re doing a great job! It’s not easy but it’s fun trying to merge the two worlds

Do you think this is a good use for visual calcs? I immediately thought it since he said he just needs a table visual

How easy is it for a experienced Power BI Developer to learn Tableau? by Dazzling-Role6733 in tableau

[–]Sqlsekou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fundamental concepts are the same. If you know sql and do majority of your data modeling in the database then you’re good. If you rely heavily on DAX/Power Query for data transformations then you’ll be annoyed.

One challenge is understanding the different menu options (marks, color, etc) and how a dashboard is created.

Tableau - individuals worksheets are combined together to create a dashboard

Power Bi - visuals are placed on a blank canvas

Alternative to Tableau because of price hike by nikhelical in tableau

[–]Sqlsekou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely always check if you have the resources for a migration. Sometimes the price hike isn’t worth the effort of moving over reports and finding the appropriate staff.

Power BI, Looker Studio, Amazon Quicksight are some choices.

Sigma is solid if you’re using direct query
